Onboard the Oasis of the Seas (August 21, 2010)

Wow, what a great view from your hotel room. We are staying at the Lago Mar so we won't have a view of the ship from there. I guess I should have done a little more research before booking. Oh well, the suspense will just last a little longer. Enjoy your trip. I watched the Oasis in port for a little while today. I can't believe I will be there in 5 weeks.

Great photo..what time was this? We sail in 7 weeks and would love to get a photo like this..I use the same camera. Also watched you sail away about 1 hour ago..enjoy this amazing ship.

How was your sailaway location on deck 14... happy cruising:D

The picture was taken around 6 in the morning.

Sail away up there was wonderful! It wasn't crowded at all. We had a great time watching her pull away from the dock and setting out toward the open sea. The view was especially great because there are two platforms that are over the wings of the bridge, so you have a great view of the dock below. We were even able to watch the pilot boat come up to the ship and pick up the pilot after we left Fort Lauderdale.

Dinner was fantastic, of course. I had the Vidalia Onion Tart for the first time and I really enjoyed it. I followed that up with a vegetable quesadilla, and an absolutely scrumptious meringue with strawberry dessert. It was a bit of heaven!

So far, the WiFi is working great. I just bought the 500 minute package, and I think it's running faster than it did when I was connected via 3G before leaving the port.

I'm going to try uploading a few photos and see how that goes.

Back soon!

That experiment didn't go so well. I tried uploading the photos from the Photos app on the iPad to my MobileMe gallery, but it seems to be stuck in a loop. I think that there may be something preventing it from completing successfully, so it keeps retrying (and there seems to be no way to abort it as it keeps trying when I go back into Photos).

In other news, they believe that the Aquatheater will be back up and running as of tomorrow. They rescheduled our reserved time from tonight to Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, they scheduled the Oasis of Dreams show at the same time we had scheduled to go to the comedy club. We'll have to juggle some stuff around, I guess.

We've got the Meet & Mingle tomorrow morning at 10:30 in Dazzles. I'm looking forward to meeting a bunch of fellow Cruise Critic folks then. Before that, we're planning on trying breakfast at Johnny Rockets and see how that is. I love that there are so many choices for dining venues... too many for one week!

It may be getting late, but I don't want to go to bed and have this day end just yet, so I think I'll go wander around some more.

See y'all tomorrow! Good night!

Okay, I'm not quite onboard just yet, but I got this shot from my hotel balcony (at the Embassy Suites) this morning and thought I'd try to share it with my friends here.

I was surprised to get such a great view of her from our room. I guess we're really lucky.

(For those interested in a technical aspect, this picture was taken with my Panasonic DMC-ZS3 camera, imported into my iPad using the iPad Camera Connection Kit, and then uploaded to MobileMe.)

I'm using the "web" size image to inline here. The next smaller size ("medium") is quite a bit smaller. I'll show that one here:

Which size looks better for the post?

What a beautiful big picture of Oasis, the large one looks fabulous. Three weeks from today we will be on this beautiful ship, have a great time on your cruise, can't wait for my time on her.

From the specs, are you using a Panasonic Lumix camera? I went to your Mobilmegallery but the make of camera and settings doesnt pop up.

<<edit>> I figured it out, you are using the new ZS7. That's the one with the built in GPS? I use the ZS3.

You should get great available light pictures with that baby.

My iPad gets to sail the Oasis on October 16. This must be my dream thread - live from the Oasis via iPad :p Seriously, I am looking forward to the details of using the iPad on board.

My iPad will also be with us on the 16 October sailing - I was just told by the "Boss" to figure out how to use the camera connection kit I bought when I bought my Pad. "Yes - Dear!". LOL

Any hints from anyone?

Thank you for all your great info......I am hoping you might be able to help me out on a question. I posted this in another thread, but I figured you would only be reading this one......If you're in the area and can check on this, it would be much appreciated.

Trying to figure out if our 2 cabins have the doors right next to each other. Has anybody stayed in or near 14302 and 14304 ? As alot of ya know, doors are like in "pairs", and I'm hoping these 2 are next to each other. If you stayed near by, I can probably calculate it out to see the answer to my question.

I think I will also post this question on a "live thread" and maybe I can get an answer in real time :)

Thank you in advance for that info

Yup, it's the DMC-ZS7. I just had a bit of user error with it. It was complaining that my second memory card wasn't properly formatted, but I couldn't seem to get it to reformat the card. After about fifteen minutes, I finally figured out my error and got it working again. Silly me!

It works really easily! You just connect it to the iPad with your SD card or camera connected (via USB), and the Photos app pops up and prompts you to select which pictures you want to import into Photos (or "Import All"). You can later on sync up your iPad with iPhoto (or some Windows comparable program, I suppose) to copy those pictures (in full resolution) to the computer.

I'll try to swing by that area and take a look for you and let you know.

Sunday, Day 2

What can I say, but I'm enjoying another day onboard the Oasis of the Seas.

We had a casual breakfast at Johnny Rockets this morning. It had rained last night, so the Boardwalk was wet and they were using big squeegees to move the pools of water to the drains. The food was decent, nothing exceptional. I had a basic breakfast sandwich (fried egg, cheddar cheese, and bacon). I did find that the "country potatoes" were rather uninspiring, but they did taste much better salted and with some bacon, too.

After that, it was down to the casino for our free pulls from the Gold member coupon books. Both pulls went very quickly without any reward. I tried a few slot machines and found them to be exceptionally tight. Even when I did find that I got a bonus round, after eight free spins, I still got $0. We played the coin pushers, too, and found them to be far more enjoyable (the money lasted much longer) and we even ended up winning some as we did manage to push over a few $20 bills that were near the edge. That was fun.

Then it was on to the Meet & Mingle. There was a decent crowd there, perhaps around 50 or so. Pinky, a member of the entertainment staff, hosted the gathering and ran the giveaway. She was very perky and lively. Afterward, a bunch went off to the cabin crawl, but we ventured off in search of lunch. After all, it had been at least an hour since we last ate!

I did have the pleasure of meeting a few people I knew from the forums here including Rosebud1g and fllisa. I wish I had met more of you, but I was feeling a bit shy at the moment, I guess.*

Barry (DH) was kind enough to go pick up the Live the Oasis book. I haven't had a chance to give it a good look, but he tells me that it looks like there's some good stuff in there.

I haven't had a chance to take any more pictures today as I left the battery charging this morning. More picture-taking later, I guess.*

A note to iPad users. I'm a bit concerned about the WiFi access. I need to check that my usage is working out right. On a normal laptop, connecting to the ship's WiFi pops up a window where you can explicitly disconnect from the network. It didn't pop up on the iPad from what I could see, so I just turned off the WiFi. I guess we'll see how that worked out the next time I connect.

Oh, and here's a surprise that just happened. We just got a delivery of a bottle of La Terre Chardonnay from our TA. How nice! In all of the cruises we've been on, we've never gotten a gift from our TA before. I'm looking forward to enjoying the wine!*

Does the Oasis always sail out of Ft . Lauderdale? I have never gone out of that port yet. We are traveling next year and were looking for a hotel so if you could let me know if the Embassy Suite that you stayed in is in Ft. Lauderdale, I'd appreciate it!

Yes, Fort Lauderdale is the home port of the Oasis of the Seas. :)
