Discount cruise due to profession

Husky,

Your post did not reference anyone's specific post, therefore it is not known to whom you were responding.

As for me, yes, I am incredibly jealous of teachers. But, I do make the point that they are well off when it comes to compensation and benefits. Further, it irks me that many support the notion that they should be treated as royalty and should be thanked for their sacrifices, as if other professions require no sacrifice or aggravation.

And lastly, the entitlement attitude that prevails in our society is what has put us in the incredible debt that we have now. And nowhere is it more prevalent than in the US education system.

I was addressing all of the posters who complained that one or more professions were getting discounts. The cruise lines are private enterprise and they can discount to whomever they desire. They should be happy that someone is getting a discount.:)

Simple economics.

If others are getting "discounts" and you are not, you are paying more to make up for their discounts.

Do you like paying other customers bills?

I do not.

Maybe you miss the point completely.

So many claim or believe that teachers are underpaid, unappreciated, and should be entitled to lots of things. And nothing could be further from the truth. And most people have NO idea about their compensation plan and that they get it for working a whopping 183 days a year.

I provided statistics that they make the equivalent of $70,000 average. They get full health and retirement benefits. They deserve nothing, and they should thank every taxpayer every pay day.

 They deserve nothing? Seems to me you can write well enough - but probably not a good time to say you should thank a teacher.... Eh, never mind.

Alright, they deserve the same as butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers.

Yikes!! Let's see ... I'm over 55, retired law enforcement, a union member, live in a state where cruise lines regularly offer discounts ... does that mean that they'll pay me to cruise???? The last discounts I received (combined law enforcement and TX resident) totalled ... are you ready ... $30! It certainly was not the determining factor in my decision. If these nickels and dimes cause this much flak, perhaps it's best to simply do away with them.

It doesn't bother me like it does others. The cruise lines are showing their appreciation for certain occupations, and I don't have a problem with that.:):)

If everyone paid a different amount for the same thing at a restaurant or a grocery store based on their occupation/profession, I guarantee people would have a problem with it.

I can see it now... "oh you're a teacher? Your potatoes are 39cents per pound. The plumber behind you? his are 59 cents a pound. The lawyer or doctor behind him? 99 cents a pound. I think people would look at each other a lot differently if we actually saw, in everyday life, what we're talking about here. It is classism, pure and simple and makes everyone resentful.... which is quite obvious from these posts.

The cruise lines are not showing appreciation. They are marketing to specific groups, with minimal discounts, to entice them to choose their line over another one. I guarantee you that no cruise line says anything about appreciation for specific groups in their strategic or marketing plans. What they do have, however, are occupancy and profit goals.

We are all important people and should have the same rights. As for nurses-I LOVE having them on a trip as ya just never know if you might need one;). Teachers are alawys getting pounded on by the public and I sure wouldn't want their job !! Emergency workers CHOSE that occupation - but I still appreciate them. As for " hookers" ..........now that might be fun to give them a discount:D. But- after all is said and done- how about EVERYONE pay the same price ? I hate being on a trip that we paid a bunch of hard earned money for-and learn that someone got some super deal because of " this or that " !! It is plain hurtful and if any place I do busines uses this approach, I simply am done with them. We should all appreciate what others do in this world and NOBODY should get special treatment or discounts IMO-Thanks:)

Want to know how many times as a teacher I was physically assaulted by students? Want to know how many times I was verbally abused? Want to know how many times a student threatened to kill me? Did any of your fellow workers shove something in the tailpipe of your car, doing major damage? I taught in a large, urban inner city school where most of my students were there as a condition of their probation or parole, and most were in gangs. The last student I received in my class was sent because he pistol whipped two of his fellow students. So, wanna tell me how easy it is to be a teacher? Thought not.

Nobody forced you to be a teacher. If you don't like it then quit complaining and find a new profession.

As I previously noted, perhaps doing away with the nickel-and-dime discounts is a far better policy than offering them. Believe me, the $20 or $30 I receive for being both over 55 and retired law enforcement has absolutely no effect on the cruises I book (I'm also a former teacher, but can't qualify for that one ... maybe another $10???).

This is not the place to determine whether anyone is overpaid, underworked, or in the wrong vocation. For the record, I enthusiastically support teachers, nurses, union members, law enforcement, the military, and any individual or group which makes this planet better ... but none is head-and-shoulders above the others, and the minimal discounts offered are inconsequential ... certainly not worth quibbling over.

Im guessing you mean at different times you have booked one or the other?? Most cruiselines I know of do not allow combining of discounted rates.. you pick which one is the best for you.

Doesn't matter ... it's of no consequence one way or the other. Believe me, I'm not going to quabble over it. In fact, I only supply the information on my TA's website because it's required, so that I may continue booking. Otherwise, I wouldn't even bother with it.

We are military and didn't even get a discount...

Yes you do. Almost all cruiselines offer a military discount.

Now,,,, maybe they are not offering it for your particular cruise,,,,or,,,, seeing as how the discounts are limited offers,,,, your cruise may have used up it's allotments for military discounts.

I'm not complaining just stating fact. I love my job and have been doing it for thirty years. My point was that I thought it was great that anyone in public service receive a discount. Some companies see fit to extend the privilage showing community appreciation.

I guess the teachers in my world are quite different than the teachers in yours.

In my public school district the average teacher makes over $60,000 a year. Those in the system for 20 to 30 years can hit $100,000 PLUS. They work 183:mad: days a year. In addition, they get full retirement and health benefits.

Without information technology professionals, society in all aspects would come to a grinding halt. Therefore, technology specialists should cruise for free.

I don't know where you live but I have been working for thirty years and I still don't make much more than your average teacher makes. In addition, you should know that teachers get paid for the time they work and do not get paid for holidays, summer etc. The salary is just spread over twelve months. We get retirement because we put our own money into it. Even though I worked for eight years before becoming a teacher, I lose my social security benefits for those years when I became a teacher. You are wrong about technology. The world survived without it once. Once more I say to you, you would not be in the profession you are in had you not been taught how to read, write and do all the things necessary in life to be sucessful. If the 183 days a year sound so appealing to you, perhaps you should look into becoming one.

Please. Spare me.

Teachers get the equivalent of an annual salary for just working 183 days, so do not tell me they do NOT get paid for holidays.

That is like telling someone that if a person works one week a year and they get paid an annual salary of $52,000 and are paid weekly $1,000 they are not getting paid for holidays.

But, maybe that is the logic behind how poorly paid our teachers are.

I disagree with the first sentence. I am a police officer and I can carry my concealed firearm in public without a permit. I can also carry switchblade knives and batons. I don't think everyone should be able to do the same.

And if you're hurt because companies give discounts and you won't do business with them, then you won't be sailing with any cruiselines, because most if not all give discounts to certain occupations.

I disagree, because its not a "right" its part of your job. Its supposed to be a right to be treated the same, but some people have earned the privledge of doing things others cannot do.

Iv been told by customs at the ports its amazing how many police dont know you cant bring their guns on a ship .. they are always confiscating firearms from people who think its their right to carry their police firearm onto a ship. Its a matter of law, not a right.

I didn't claim that teachers don't get an annual salary. Seems to me you have a real problem with someone whose job requires less time than yours. I don't intend to defend how much time a year I work ( and believe me it is alot more time spent then you know). You seem bitter. That's a shame. If you remember, this original post was about discounts for people who do public service work. All people including the military regardless as to when they served. Being in the business world is alot different from being in a position of public service or military. People who are in these fields usually have a calling and money is not what it's all about. This ends my comments on the issue. Try to find someone else to argue with.
