Discount cruise due to profession

I've seen various cruise websites that offer cruise discounts if you're a teacher, firefighter, EMT, police, past guest, military... but have never seen one for nurses. Does anyone know why? As you can tell, I'm a nurse and I'd like equal treatment. :D

Don't know why either - people will say it's because police, fire fighters etc risk their lives in their jobs. Nurses statistically have a high risk of being assaulted on the job, work with blood, sharps, risk exposure to bloodborne pathogens, etc. Wish there were some recognition for this, but then I guess they had to draw the line somewhere. I think nurses aids & hospital assistants deserve the discount, given the work they do, more than most anyone.

Odds are that you are looking at a travel agent's site and that they are simply marketing their discount to a particular audience (or audiences).

If you look through the details of each cruise line's site, you'll find all kinds of small discounts. The discounts usually can't be combined, so you need to figure out which ones you qualify for and pick the deepest discount. For example, on an NCL cruise last year several members of our family got discounts for being union members, which would include most public school teachers. Another took advantage of the military discount NCL offers.

I too feel this way. As a nurse, the medical community is very deserving and should be included. We are a lifeline to everyone who is in need. I once corresponded with Vacations To Go about this. They stated it was up to the cruise line to determine this, not them.

Doctors also are subject to the risks inherent to the medical professions, but I doubt you'll see many businesses offering them discounts. I agree with discounting for the military, but beyond that I think you start to have the makings of "classism".

Which cruiseline gives teachers discounts? That one doesnt make sense to me.

That comment wasn't very nice. Who taught you how to read, write, and do all of the other things you needed to know in order to give you a running start at being successful in life? To answer your questions both HAl and MSC offer substancial discount for teachers( up to 70-80% off list price). They do that for other professional fields,as well, as a matter of community appreciation. Teachers are the backbone of any society. Most other countries know this and treat their teachers with great respect. Teachers are underpaid and overworked. I think it's wonderful when any business shows their appreciation for teachers through discounts( this goes for firefighters, police, nurses, and any others in the public service field). BTW, in today's world teachers put their lives on the line everytime they walk into a classroom.

I second the need(want) for a nurse discount! I've been an ED nurse for 35 years and even though I haven't "seen it all" I've seen more than most people could imagine! Even a small discount would be appreciated! As for the doctors and lawyers, try living YOUR lifestyle on the salaries of police officers, firefighters, nurses, med techs, teachers, etc. And, an especially huge THANK YOU to the military and their families who protect us and our sailing enviroment so that we may enjoy our vacations!

I guess the teachers in my world are quite different than the teachers in yours.

In my public school district the average teacher makes over $60,000 a year. Those in the system for 20 to 30 years can hit $100,000 PLUS. They work 183:mad: days a year. In addition, they get full retirement and health benefits.

Without information technology professionals, society in all aspects would come to a grinding halt. Therefore, technology specialists should cruise for free.

BTW, every time someone cruises for free or discount, that is passed on to other passengers / customers.

Nothing is free. Somebody ALWAYS gets stuck with the tab.

So, next time you are cruising and want to show appreciation for a fellow passenger that is a teacher, slip them a couple of hundred bucks.

where exactly do you draw the line?

Nurses OK, CNA's are not.

Teachers OK, teacher assistants not.

Postal workers OK, Garbage workers, not?

Hotel front desk people OK,,, hotel housekeeping staff not OK

Hookers OK? or would it be based on street walkers vs high class call girls?

What makes one profession more important that the other?

I guess hookers would qualify as long as they were in a union.

Exactly, however, the military sacrifies safety, family and possibly their lives to protect the country... they deserve a discount if they are active duty. And most don't have the choice of where they serve.

**BTW, I'm not military, so I'm not looking for an entitlement for myself.**

As an emergency nurse for 21 years, I have probably seen in one week more "action" than many military see in their whole tour of duty, and don't get me wrong I come from a military family and my dad died a colonel. He was the first to say he couldn't believe the stuff we are forced to deal with: violent drug seekers and overdoses of dangerous drugs, psychotic patients with homocidal tendencies,

IV drug users with dirty needles in their pockets, not to mention the

huge population of morbidly obese (I'm on WW so don't flame me!) patients that we are expected to move and care for singlehandedly.

There isn't a nurse I know that doesn't have a bad back, bad knee or some other injury that has been caused directly by work. Nurses are injured or killed every year- how is this different? The difference is that unless you are in the medical field most of the time you don't hear about this stuff.

We have to know everything from how to deal with homeland security exposures, to heart attacks, to simple sore throats that turn out to be deadly diseases! How many other lines of work do you know that do things like this, and remove weapons from patients (we have no security force at our hospital - we are it!) that are a danger to us and our other patients. Sounds like we should qualify for SOME kind of discount! Ok, now I've had my say.....

And what forced you to enter that field and what is forcing you to stay in it if you find it so dangerous to complain about it like that?

You qualify for a discount as much as IT Professionals, chefs, barbers and mechanics.

Now I have had my say.

Just curious, what other perks and discounts do you believe you are entitled to?

First of all, no one forced me to enter this field - I did it as an adult and was fully aware of what I was doing.

Secondly, I am not complaining - just stating fact.

Thirdly, I agree with you, there are many professionals that should qualify.

I am not asking for "other perks and discounts", but just agreeing with

the OP that we as nurses work a dangerous field as well as the EMT's, firemen, and military. Unfortunately, it is not recognised as such. As with those fields, there will always be a need for nursing.

I'm a nurse, my DH is an Intensivist/ER Doc, my son is a high angle rescue expert/paramedic. We all chose those professions to help people. Not for discounts.

We also get to come home everyday..... that's all I'm saying.

Well, how about bankers? They take care of your money for you, helping you save up for a cruise. They are at risk from armed robbers.

Pizza chefs too -- they work in hot environments making your favorites for you daily, risking burns.

Hamburger-flippers at McD's and Burger King, Wendy's, etc -- not to mention ice cream scoopers at Friendly's or Baskin Robbins.

Yes, and construction workers -they spend much of the day making passing women feel good about themselves.

Graffitti artists get little recognition for their efforts - and virtually no posititive reinforcement.

Finally, those cabin stewards, bar tenders and dining room stewards working on cruise lines around the world - making cruising what it is.

The world is full of folk deserving special discounts from cruise lines.

Lets give everybody discounts on their cruises -- the same amount all around - just to be fair.
