Imperial Bill Posted February 12, 2011 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2011 We are scheduled for the Footsteps of Balboa cruise aboard Marina, and do not intend to go ashore in Acapulco due to the many stories about the drug war murders. In todays WSJ they have an excellent article on the subject and refer to their web site, WSJ.com/Review, for even more information. Oceania should recognize the problem and drop Acapulco for a safer port.
Rare ORV Posted February 12, 2011 #2 Share Posted February 12, 2011 I didn't realize it was an issue in Acapulco. Do you have a link for that story.
Occy Posted February 12, 2011 #3 Share Posted February 12, 2011 It's a shame because I quite enjoyed our excursions in Acapulco and definitely put it to the top of enjoyable tours on our Panama trip. Yes, things do seem to be getting quite violent there. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2011/01/08/headless-bodies-mexico-resort-city-1591571545/

Liv4cruzin Posted February 12, 2011 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2011 I've noticed this subject discussed on a few other cruise lines' boards. And Mexican ports have been bypassed or substituted in recent history. I'll be interested to hear Oceania's take on this growing problem.

ricki Posted February 12, 2011 #7 Share Posted February 12, 2011 We did a New York to Los Angeles cruise on Crystal this past November. During the sailing, they made the decision to substitute Huatulco for Acucapulco. This was greeted with affirmation by most the passengers. Unfortunately, we couldn't tender into Huatulco due to rough seas. Crystal, as well as any other cruise line, I'm sure, puts the safety of its passengers, crew and ships foremost in making a decision to avoid a particular port. TERRIER1 Posted February 12, 2011 #8 Share Posted February 12, 2011 We didn't experience any violence when we ported in Acapulco in January 2010. However, I didn't like the port compared to others we could have stopped. We enjoyed the others which included Cabo.
joyous Posted February 13, 2011 #9 Share Posted February 13, 2011 We aren't fond of Acapulco either. Have not been off the ship there in a couple of cruises. Acapulco will always be a "sea day" for me. joyous
Floridiana Posted February 13, 2011 #10 Share Posted February 13, 2011 Unfortunately, we couldn't tender into Huatulco due to rough seas. Ricki Ricki, I did not realize that Huatulco is a tender port. The map shows a large pier. Was it taken by another ship?
BEAV Posted February 13, 2011 #11 Share Posted February 13, 2011 Ricki, I did not realize that Huatulco is a tender port. The map shows a large pier. Was it taken by another ship? You are correct. Two other ships was already scheduled to dock there. Since Symphony's arrangements to call at Huatulco were made with little advance notice, they were required to anchor, which as Ricki said had to be cancelled due to the rough seas. WaterView2 Posted February 13, 2011 #12 Share Posted February 13, 2011 We have not made any shore reservations in Acapulco and are going to wait to assess the situation. There were major incidents in the past few days in both Guadalajara and Monterey, Mexico's second and third largest cities, as well as continuing problems along the border. At the same time, some areas seem to be normal, very hard to predict without local knowledge that we don't have.
San Carlos lady Posted February 15, 2011 #13 Share Posted February 15, 2011 As an American choosing to live in Mexico, we feel just as safe here as in US. We are small town, San Carlos, Sonora, and like the US, are more careful when visiting larger cities. Our women's golf group is going down to Mazatlan the end of the month--but have promised our husbands not to go to any nightclubs at night???? Come enjoy the country--just stay away from the bad areas of town--as you would do in the US cities!

lyndenfa Posted February 21, 2011 #17 Share Posted February 21, 2011 Absolutely!! We have been to Acapulco many times in the past and have no intention of getting off the ship in early May while we're there! We were in Acaulco last year w/ O's Panama crossing. Decided we would not get off the ship if we go back; very congested, reminded me of Los Angeles. Traffic, smog/pollution, crowede streets. Our Hautulco visit was one of our favorites (along w/ Cabo). Very pristine and quiet. We would go back there for sure if it is on another itinerary.
orchestrapal Posted February 22, 2011 #18 Share Posted February 22, 2011 Thirty people killed today but fortunately no tourists. RC and Norwegian just announced that they are cancelling Acapulco stops for the near future. We are also scheduled for a stop there and wonder if Oceania will follow if not this will be a sea day for us as well.
