Have you ever cancelled?

I had to cancel an Infinity cruise last year (going on the same one this year) due to my Mom's illness (she died shortly thereafter). My X trip insurance paid in about 2 months.

We had no problem with our insurance either. Rounding up the documentation was a little bit of a pain but after everything was submitted they paid right away.

Never had to cancel (yet!), but i track the open SRs on our cruises - yes, I'm a sick puppy! - and its interesting watching them open and close. Right before Final Paymenet, the numbers jump around even more. But I think a lot of the 'movement' on SRs is with people changing/upgrading. Specific types of SRs will go cheaper when they aren't filling and people watch it and upgrade.

I've even seen posts where people have said they booked a cruise with a low chance of going, or book two very similar, even overlapping cruises, and wait for discounts. I find that weird. I'm afraid I'm the type who gets hooked on a cruise, and although I like a 'good deal', I'm not into some of the games and switching some are into...heck look at the thread on the 'Don't Cruise Celebrity,,,' where the guy goes on and on about his poor friends who's cabin class dropped in price. I don't measure my vacations (or life) on how much it costs me and go crazy if someone else is getting a 'better' deal.

Enough....

As a gift to my parents I booked us on a late November 4-night cruise out of San Juan PR on the old Nordic Empress. About a month before the cruise my mother turned very ill and was basically home-bound. We were booked in the very first balcony cabin just aft of the Centrum atrium, an excellent location as there would be no other cabins or balconies on that side of the ship forward of us. I cancelled the cruise, we had insurance of course. My mother passed 2 weeks after the cruise date.

She only ever got to cruise once in her life, an anniversary gift from me to my parents. They were booked in a Category 12 Suite on the Carnival Ecstasy. She was a good ole girl from the sticks of Tennessee, and she often told me this was one of the highlights of her life. She never failed to break out the pictures to show our friends. I still have a picture of them on the gangway as they visited Nassau. It sits just above me on at my computer desk.

Oh my. Your story touches my heart. I'm sorry to hear of your mother's passing right before your cruise or passing in general. My mom passed almost 2 years ago. We got to do 4 cruises together. Cruising was always her dream. I finally had the finances to take her on a cruise back in the 90's on a RCI ship. We visited Nassau as well. She loved that cruise and loved the time at the Atlantic Resort in the casino!:D She, like your mom, always talked about our first cruise. I was lucky enough to cruise with her on other cruises. I'm so sorry that you didn't get the opportunity to cruise with her on a subsequent cruise. But, I'm sure, like me you are very happy and hold fond memories of being able to sail with our mothers who most likely thought they may never get an experience such as this.

Bless you

We've only had to cancel before final payment when work schedules changed or when we decided to go somewhere else instead.

We don't take travel insurance but we're young and healthy and think we're invincible, right? We do have medical insurance but we're willing to gamble on the cancellation part. We've saved enough money over the years by not taking cancellation insurance to still come out ahead even if we have some misfortune befall us and have to eat the cost of a trip. After all- they wouldn't offer insurance if it was a good buy.

Yes. I just cancelled the cruise we had planned for next year as we had the opportunity to buy a vacation home in Florida. So for a year or two I will be cruising in our back yard instead of on a ship! In the long run it will be worth it. Right now its hard as I love CC and am sooooo jealous of everyone with a cruise booked.

Just think of the deals you will get with living in florida. I think it would be very hard to cancel, but you will travel again ... congrats on your new vacation home by the way.

Den, so I'm curious how you track the staterooms and if there is an easy way? I'm one of those cruisers who tries to book early to get the cabin I want but sometimes I get beat out...and I go back to website and check regularly to see if the person who took " my cabin" cancelled. Yes I'm a sick puppy too and looking for an easier way to track...

Sorry, can't list the specific site because it competes with cruise critic, but just do search and you'll find dome sites that list availability on cruises.

Had to cancel my upcoming QM2 cruise as I fell and broke my neck. :(

I do have insurance and hope that there'll be no trouble claiming. Was really looking forward to it as well.

Guess I can look forward to booking the next one.

Gall bladder emergency a few days before sailing...

dtr's medical issue this summer......

had insurance that covered both..we always get insurance...would not travel without it!

we have also cancelled a few times to re-arrange schedule for a better cruise but none of these was after final payment... mostly transferred the booking number to another cruise

Three days before leaving east coast Canada to take our March 2010 Equinox 11 night Ultimate from Ft. Lauderdale, my husband was told he would have to cancel his vacation due to issues at work. Our travel insurance doesn't cover that. We lost the cost of our cruise plus 100,000 Aeroplan Miles. Even though his company reimbursed us, we booked the same cruise for 2011 ( and it was fantastic! ), we never did get our winter vacation in 2010. The whole thing was a major disappointment for us but someone was able to get a great C2 Cabin with the largest balcony, #1243, just 3 days before sailing.

Yes, I've had to cancel 3 cruises.

The day before we were to sail I was rushed to the Emergency Room and was told I had a blot clot in my leg and I possibly had a Pulmonary Embolism. I was put on injectable blood thinners immediately and was told I could not travel for at least 3-4 weeks. No insurance, but Celebrity have us 50% of the cruise cost back in a Future Cruise Credit.

The other two I canceled before final payment for other health reasons.

No we buy insurance because even if you are relatively young and healthy, doesn't mean something won't happen to you.

As we would lose deposits with a cancellation, I have no experience of having to cancel. I am also interested in what happens if I need to change sailing dates. What happens with deposits?

In the UK if you need to make what Celebrity consider to be a "major" change...moving ship or sailing date.....they will transfer your deposits BUT they will charge you a £75 admin fee pp. So basically you are forfeiting 50% of your deposit.

We have switched saildate once.....DS decided after we'd booked that he didn't want to come after all so we switched to the same cruise a month later. It was cheaper, so even after losing his deposit and paying the admin fee, we were still better off.

We have also cancelled once....Our Equinox cruise had a huge price drop which X said "was for new bookings only" and wouldn't honour. So we cancelled, forfeited our £450 deposits and rebooked the same cruise and same cabin. We were still ahead £600.

Yes. I just cancelled my first cruise in 8 years of sailing with Celebrity.

I was supposed to sail to Bermuda on Summit leaving on Sept 4th.

My Dad passed away on August 30th.

Sorry to hear this, Lois R.

Booked a B2B Baltic and TA cruise about 18 months ago. After deposit, and before booking air, while I was planning private shore excursions, I realized that even though the cruise itself was a fantastic price, the costs of everything else just kept escalating. When we pulled the plug a year ago, the other costs at that time would have paid for the 2 of us to go on another Caribbean cruise. Instead we cancelled the Baltic cruise and booked a different TA which we got at a great price. We sail in 2 weeks and I am really looking forward to it. We also were able to do a week long Caribbean cruise this past January and move up to a different level. So it all worked out. Still paid less for both of these cruises than the original cancelled cruise And we almost always take an inexpensive inside cabin.

Ciao,

Nikki
