Seabourntraveller Posted January 12, 2012 Author #516 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Day 42: Phuket, Thailand 8:00am-5:30pm Good Morning from the Legend as we are about to be tied up here alongside the new pier in Phuket, Thailand. We are running a bit late getting tied up and have yet to have all guests drop off thier completed landing cards to the Reception. Our breakfast in the Veranda Cafe A.K.A. "the mad house" was quick as the place was packed at 7:30am when we arrived when they opened. There was a full on "ATTACK" on the breaskfast buffet. My travelling partner is going on the tour "Phuket Landmarks" which is a 4.5 hour tour returning to the ship at approx. 1:00pm or shortly thereafter. I will provide a review of his tour later today after he returns. I plan on taking a tuk tuk and going to a nearby beach even though our weather today is completely overcast but thankfully no rain as of yet! Humidity today is high again as it is quite normal at this time of year in Thailand. The New Terminal in Phuket is called Chaophaya Terminal International in case anyone is arranging private tours to meet them and pick up and drop off. This new terminal has some small kiosk with various vendors from what I can see from my Suite window that are currently setting up thier tables. We will be having Thai authorities coming onboard hopefully shortly to give us clearance to go ashore. I just saw the Destination Manager Ilona leave the gangway to the buses so we should be disembarking shortly. More to come later today from the Legend in Phuket, Thailand. Diaw Posted January 12, 2012 #519 Share Posted January 12, 2012 I have also been reading this report for a few weeks now, and would like to thank you very much for your no holds barred comments. However I am having a very different reaction to your report than most other people here seem to be having. Everyone seems to think the whole thing is very funny and amusing, while I am thinking it all sounds like a cruise from hell at a very high price. You have said very complimentary things about the food and service, which to me is very important on a cruise, but isn’t the only thing I look for. My wife and I had been considering a Seabourn cruise, but not now that I have followed your report. When cruising we enjoy peace and quiet, but this Seabourn cruise sounds like the very worst of a Carnival Party Ship. There seems to be many passengers who to me sound quite feral and I certainly would not want to pay the price Seabourn charges and then have to tolerate the behaviour that you have described. Just some of the antics you have mentioned are, “degenerate young heathens, getting smashed morning noon and night”. “naked grandpas” afraid I just cannot imagine that one. “passengers manhandling crew”, “children running back and forth yelling and screaming”, “elderly guests drunk as skunks arguing at the Sky Bar”, smoking in the halls, Deck 4 like a mosh pit, trying to leave the ship, etc . Now you top it all off talking about “pot smoking hippies with boombox blasting day and night” and heavy smoking smells. You then go on to describe one of the dining venues as a “mad house”, people “attacking the buffet”, fighting for tables, packed to the rafters! My God, this does not sound at all like any luxury cruise I have ever heard of. So again, thank you so much for what you have written, I am sure it has saved me and a lot of other people a lot of money. I also read some of another report where the person writing reported almost everything on a ship that could go wrong, DID go wrong. Will go and read some of the other luxury cruiseline reports now, hope they will sound a lot better than a cruise on Seabourn.

Will go and read some of the other luxury cruiseline reports now, hope they will sound a lot better than a cruise on Seabourn. Diaw; I want you to know the following; everything that I did describe in the past 42 did happen and I did not embelish one part of it not even with the colourful descriptions that I have put at times. There are MANY incidents that I purposely did not report for many reasons, but primarily because I don't want to embarass the Management and Crew that have worked so hard and discount all thier hard work and efforts to keep us all pampered and happy during the past 42 days. I think you need to also take into account the following. It doesn't matter if you are on a 6 Star Cruiseline or Carnival...you can't regulate people's behaviour but rather you can discourage certain things from repeating themselves. For example, here on the Legend the Dress Code is strictly enforced; I for one was on the receiving end of it the first night we went to Restaurant 2 and Eddie the Assistant Maitre'd explained to me that he needed me to change my pants even though it was embarkation Night in Athens. I respected him for that taking into account the other passengers dining in that venue that same night and moving forward. The ship (Legend) and it's crew are AMAZING and go out of thier way....maybe too much at times in terms of "never saying no" to a passenger and hence putting up with a lot of different behaviour. I would not hesitate to recommend this ship and it's crew to anyone in the future; in fact I would sail the Legend again without hesitation even given all that I witnessed in the past 42 days. We had three different types of cruisers on these three segments from Athens-Dubai, Dubai-Mumbai and now from Mumbai to Singapore and add to the mix during the holidays which brings out the strangest of people never mind on Seabourn or any other cruiseline (we have done Xmas/New Year's Cruises now 16 years in a row and it's the same non-sense every year) Believe me when I tell I didn't report the HALF OF IT on New Year's Eve where we had open "Gay Bashing" in the Club that evening with druken German Passengers totally smashed out of thier minds and being very disrupted...this can happen on Seabourn as it could happen on HAL, Princess or on land. I also had some horrible service experiences' in ordering basic confort foods such as a cheeseburger being sent back 3 times, a grilled cheese that looked like road kill with cheese smuthered between two slices of bread and cold eggs. Why did I not report these incidents on here you may ask?.. because I trully felt that it would have served an injustice towards the hardworking crew and Management striving each and every day here onboard the Legend to please everyone...if you are looking for perfection I can tell you that Seabourn is the one cruiseline IMO that we have sailed that comes close. There are just those days were sh*t happens and it can happen on Seabourn as well but it's the way they correct the situation with guests is what has impressed me most of all. FYI, the ship disembarked our resident "Pot Smoking" heaten and his Mother today at 8:45am in Phuket, Thailand and were escorted off the ship's gangway with luggage and all. Obviously the ship had a plan in place and I venture to guess that it wasn't OK'd by shoreside in time to throw them off without any consequences in Galles, Sri Lanka; otherwise I am sure Captain Pedder and Guillaume Colas would have as it has been my dealings with them that they are both very fair and straight up gentlemen and no non-sense type of people. This is excatly the type of reaction I would expect seabourn to take with anyone that is being disrespectfull with crew and passengers. To sumise all of the above, I am the type of person that will notice way more than the average person because of the type of work I do which is Project Management which is all about milestons, timelines and deliverables and details otherwise save and except the smell of pot I really don't know how many other guests would have picked up half of what I did. Be confident and secure enough to book your cruise on Seabourn is what I would say.
Seabourntraveller Posted January 12, 2012 Author #521 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Further Afternoon Update; Phuket, Thailand: I was at Reception getting a copy of my account this monring and low and behold I saw our very own "Jimmy Hendrix" with his Mother and luggage in tow being escorted off the ship down the gangway. Obviously, the ship did have a plan in place other than just having Security patrolling deck 6 frequently at night. They had a plan in place since Galle, Sri Lanka to disembark him due to the deterioration in the situation with his pot smoking even after having so many warnings. It was all done very discreatly and professionally; there were no scenes at all or distasteful exchanges in words. I have to applaud the Management in how they handled this most of what must of been unpleasant situations to deal with it in the past 42 days since Athens, Greece. Once I saw him leave with Mother in tow; I saw the rest of tours being dispatched from the pier of the ship. You should know that Phuket Town is only 20 minutes away by taxi and they charge $10 USD one-way or $5 by tuk tuk. The weather here today has cleared up significantly from this morning and we now have a current temperature of 26C or 80F under partly cloudy skies but with high humidity. Lunch today in the Veranda Cafe was very quiet as we were only 23 passengers that stayed onboard; the rest of the ship was on tour. I had a very nice Fettucini Alfredo for lunch and the themed buffet for lunch today was "Tempura Lunch". Service was excellent as always with Bromley, Sarah, Darren the Assistant Maitre'd attending to everyone's whims. My travelling partner came back from his tour at approx. 1:00pm and joined me on the Veranda Cafe outside to have lunch. He chose the "Phuket Landmarks" tour and said he would recommend it to anyone. You saw the main highlights of Phuket and a visit to an impressively ornate Chalong Temple and the Big Buddha Temple and a great photo stop at Promthep Cape with some very impressive views of all of Phuket. All in all he was very satisfied with his tour which lasted 4.5 hours and extremely reasonably priced at $49.00 per person. We sail today at 5:30pm and have a short distance of approx. 180 nm until we reach Penang, Malaysia tomorrow at 7:30am. More to come from the "Fantastic" Legend currently in Phuket, Thailand. Diaw Posted January 12, 2012 #522 Share Posted January 12, 2012 seabourntraveller, please dont get me wrong, I am in no way suggesting that you are embellishing anything, but now you are saying you didnt repoprt HALF of what has gone on, on the ship. This worries me even more. Now there is Gay Bashing and drunken German passengers, plus a lot more you havent told us about! This is what worries me and would be my reason for not booking Seabourn. I know you have always said how good the staff are, and how good the food is, well most of the time, but it is the other people who apparently cruise on Seabourn who would be a problem for me. Anyway enjoy the rest of your few days there and I hope the passengers start behaving more in the manner you would expect on any luxury cruise. lincslady Posted January 12, 2012 #523 Share Posted January 12, 2012 Diaw - I think it is because this cruise has had an unusually high amount of disruptive or whatever passengers that it has aroused so much interest from seasoned Seabournophiles. As well as being interesting anyway. I for one have felt very sorry for the Captain and his staff, as well as the well behaved passengers for what has gone on. Do believe me, and I am sure others will concur, that it is most unlikely that you would find so many problem passengers on a Seabourn ship. We have encountered rather drunken people once or twice, but never more than about four at a time, and never behaving appallingly. This on more than 10 Seabourn voyages. We have noticed that Christmas cruises do generally attract a few people who are not welcome at home! We have done one or two, on other lines, and found that there are always a larger number than usual of rather difficult passengers on board. I was very pleased to read that the pot smokers had been disembarked today.

As I said i would not take what happened in the 42 days as somehting common to Seabourn...I personally am of the opinion that what took place at times onboard the Legend was an anomoly and not "typical" of what you would encounter on any Seabourn ship. BTW, did I forget to mention that on Deck 5 since the begining of this cruise a large Mexican Family travelling with 3 or 4 kids have been running around doing circles and donuts so much so that the carperting is wearing out on that deck....appqrently they ran around so much the other day that they decided at 6:00am to run around and take down all the breakfast cards from Suite doors....boy that was the only thing we didn't have go on deck 6 and happen to us since we embarked in Athens, Greece.
