How's the new HAL non smoking policy working out?

Which of course is why they booked with a cruiseline which allows verandah smoking.

 

 

After 73 cruises with HAL and dissatisfaction the last times we sailed "X" and Princess' date=' it seems a lot to ask we should simply abandon the ships and crews we love and fellow HAL'ers we've met through the years in order that we don't have to breathe someone's second hand smoke.[/b']

 

Doesn't seem totally reasonable to me.

But that is only my viewpoint.

Of course it's completely your choice whether to continue to sail on HAL and risk that your veranda neighbors are heavy smokers or to sail on a line where they don't allow smoking on verandas. I'm sure you've weighed these options carefully and decided that you'll take the risk.

 

Your loyalty to and love of HAL is clearly more important than ensuring you can enjoy your balcony whenever you want to.

You are wrong about Princess - smoking was still allowed in staterooms last July. I believe their policy changed this month.

Well, smoking rules have changed and smokers habits have changed over Sail's 73 cruises. And if more people are smoking on balconies then it would affect others on their balconies.

I agree, and you can really feel the difference on Celebrity ships! We like HAL, but we never book a cabin with a balcony.

In fact, Celebrity just upgraded their smoking policy again -- no smoking anywhere inside the ship, and of course, no smoking in cabins/balconies. They rolled this out with their new Solstice class ship, the Silhouette, and one of their Millennium class ships -- soon to be fleet wide.

One thing I noticed on my last Nieuw Amsterdam cruise was the large number of ship's crew that still smokes.

You know how we always tell people to not book a guarantee room they would not be happy with...I think you will need to make peace with HAL policy or be unhappy.

Yes, it is simply a matter of luck if we are able to use and enjoy our veranda. IF you are lucky, you won't have a smoker spoiling the air beside you. If you are not lucky, you could lose use of your veranda for the whole cruise as has happened to us. We had smokers on both sides of us and I don't think they ever left their verandas. Whenever we went out, they were there puffing away.

 

Well, Judy, I think that you have only two options! ;) One is to (now) book either an Ocean View or Interior Stateroom Cat on HAL OR vote with your $$$ & book all your future cruises on other cruiselines with more restrictive smoking policies that do not permit smoking on their balconies/verandahs! :) Three cruiselines to choose from, among others, would be Celebrity, Princess or Oceania! ;)

HAL was supposed to start their non smoking policy last week. They said they were going to ionize and deep clean all the staterooms, etc. Just wondering if recent cruisers noticed anything different. i.e. did the cabin have a stale smoke odor, were there more balconies used for smoking, where exactly do they let you smoke on board now. I imagine the casino, but any of the other public rooms, bars, cabana's etc?

 

HAL now has the same non smoking policy as most of the other major cruise lines except that they are the only one who still allows smoking on balconies. I wonder how enforcement is taking place. A first warning or a zero tolerance rule and fine?

 

All you recent cruisers, both smokers and non smokers, please weigh in on this issue.

I can continue to exercise my freedom of speech and complain........ complain to anyone who stands still long enough to listen. Smoking is allowed on the balcony...... FOR NOW. Always subject to change.

 

It was all the complaining and comments that got the recent change and all other changes. More complaining should finally get the smoking policy into the 21st centry standards. The overwhelming number of Canadians and Americans who make up a huge percentage of HAL's cruising population in the Western Hemisphere are non-smokers.

 

 

If they want different rules for ships in Asia or Australia/New Zealand, do what they want/the majority of their cruisers want there.
