Stupid Question

Recommended Posts

Ok, so Freedom leaves out of Port Canaveral so we have to fly in to Orlando?

Check the FLA departure board for lots of hints and suggestions about trnasportation from MCO (Orlando) to Port Canaveral and where to stay.

Good luck! :)

I guess the word "near" is all relative. I never considered Port Canaveral to be near Orlando, or its airport, at all.

If you are wondering which major airport to fly in to before getting on a ship in Port Canaveral, Orlando's MCO is near :p

This is why I did not like departing from Port Canaveral. Port Everglades easy on easy off.

I very much dislike Port Canaveral because of the distance to the airport. And I suppose that the luggage issue we had when we disembarked Mariner at the end of our cruise didn't' do much to help my memories of the port either. Ft. Lauderdale and San Juan Puerto Rico remain my two favorite departure ports.

I don't really think an hour ride to/from the airport is any big deal. If you fly in and out of IAH in Houston for a cruise out of Galveston Island, you'll be looking at about twice that distance.

Flying into Orlando is soooo much cheaper than flying into Ft. Lauderdale. It is completely worth the hour trip.

But you also need to factor in transportation costs to see if it's "worth" it or not.

I live near Port Canaveral and it's about a 45-50 minute ride from the Orlando Regional Airport (MCO) to the port. There are also other airports in the vicinity that are just as close or closer however you will most likely get the best deals out of MCO. Transfer and shuttle costs will probably be the same with more options out of MCO.

Other airports in the area;

Orlando Executive Airport--ORL

Orlando Sanford Airport--SFB

Melbourne International Airport--MLB (don't let the name fool you--nothing international about this airport!

SFB and MLB do offer some good fares from certain parts of the US so it's worth checking, at least.

Best,

Sunny

Wow that's far. But at the same time, an hour each way to the airport isn't very convenient compared to FLL being 10 mins from Port Everglades, or MIA being close to the Miami port. Heck even the Baltimore port is only 15 mins away from BWI.

Port Canaveral is an HOUR away from Orlando!!! The PORT is on the coast...Orlando is totally land-locked...central northern Florida!

Actually 45 minutes on the Beach Line highway and Orlando is considered part of Central Florida.

I always grit my teeth when cruise lines like to advertise "Orlando's Port Canaveral".

Sheeez.... Orlando is in Orange county...Port Canaveral is in Brevard county.

And believe it or not...we actually do have an airport (though small and limited)

in Melbourne too, but it is about the same drive time as coming from Orlando.

And no...it is not an hour away. It is about 43 miles, straight shot east down

Highway 528 (also called Beachline/previously Beeline). The highway is 70 mile

an hour speed limit as soon as you leave the airport.

Usually takes us about 40 minutes. Very easy drive.

There are many shuttles available, and of course rental cars. Many like to come in

the night before and stay at the hotels right near the port that will shuttle

you right to the terminal entrance in the morning.

Have a wonderful cruise! :)
