What is it about these boards that attract postings from the luckiest gamblers and not the losers? Where are you losers???? Don't let these winners hog all our space. There are a lot more of us out there than there are winners.

I have noticed that I have never found a poker player or casino gambler who has lost money. In fact, it's amazing just how many break even :) Obviously, I only know lucky people.

Where are the Losers?.....Right here!

My advice.....Don't.

OK, now that I've taken the 'high moral ground", go ahead and enjoy. We play a bit. I do the Poker slots and it seems to run up and down, but even with our minor win/loss playing, I tend to 'forget' how much I lost in a sitting, but sure know how much I won. Human Nature at it's most dangerous.

Got a real laugh on our last cruise. A woman sitting next to me was going on and on about how much and how unfair the tip/gratuities were, but she was feeding that slot as if there was no tomorrow. To each our own.

My tips for roulette: Set a limit! And if you lose it, DO NOT CHASE YOUR LOSSES!

As a few have said, watch the dealers, they do make mistakes especially when clearing losing chips by sweeping up winning ones. Do not be afraid to challenge them if you think they have made a mistake.

Do not try and hand the dealer money for chips, just ask for a colour and throw the money on the table, it may seem rude but that's the way it is done.

And finally, BE LUCKY!

This happened on a cruise I was on a couple of years ago. Two guys said they had chips on a winning number after the chips were swept away. The dealer pointed up and said he'd have to check it on the camera. I didn’t realize they had cameras looking down on the tables. I probably should have though because I know they have hundreds of cameras all over the ship. It wasn't a Celebrity ship and the casino was so smoky I just couldn't sit there any longer, so I never did find out the result.

That is also one thing I noticed - lots of security cameras on the ship, especially in the casino. With so much money changing hands, it only makes sense to protect not only Celebrity but also their customers from any mistakes.

We took a cruise on Princess in 2007 and walked through the casino in awe:o but never dabbled as we had no idea what to do!

Feeling a tad braver this time but what would be the the best advice you could give to a couple of casino virgins? (btw we have a generous obc supplied by X but don't want to blow this soley on the casino)...any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

FG x

Don't play the slots near high traffic areas. They know you'll find them convenient. Like others have said, the payouts are AWFUL! If I were you, I'd avoid the casino altogether and spend your $ on specialty restaurants, beverage cards, tours, etc.

I noticed on one of the daily schedules someone posted that there are daily Texas Hold 'em tournaments. Anyone have any idea how this works and what the entrance fee is? I' sailing on the summit in 6 days and would love to play poker one night!

Yep! It makes you wonder how they paid for all those big casinos.

As Kenny Rogers Says "you got to know when to fold, know when to hold , know when to walk away and know when to run!" I know when to do that I guess....;)

Do I lose, sure I do, when that begins to happen I fold and walk away, :) wen I am ahead I play my winnings, not the original amount, and I hold often watching the dice and the thrower, Some throw more fields than others, some throw all 6 and 8's other you see hit 7 in a few throws, so you don't always bet, you watch and see, and if the table is fast, you walk away. :D

Slots can pay. Play in high traffic areas. The passing crowd is apt to stay if they hear you winning.

TBN Hubby here

I find that I cam minimize my losses and maximize the time spent by only using small bills.

I go to the very back and, one at a time, throw them off the ship into the sea. Takes more time than the table games and the results are the same.

:D

But not nearly as fun..... we have a good time meeting people around the table and the dealers are a riot.:D Besides we aren't polluting the waters... guess you have to play to understand though.... ;) next time just give me the small bills I'll save you the time spent throwing them away and play with them in the casino.:D then when I win I keep them!!

  • 1 month later...

A lot of others have keyed in on my gambling 'rules'...

I go in with a set amount...say $100.

I play until I either A. lose the $100 and walk out, or

B. Double the money to $200. At that point, I put the original $100 in my pocket, and start over. Double up again, pocket another $100. Once you are out of the 'playing money', walk out.

So far it's worked well for me.

Neither one is correct...It is one of the myths of slot machines as are many of the things that were in this thread from a couple of months ago. The placement of the machines is based on the philosophy of who is setting up the machines in the casino. YOu will not know what it is because you don't know who it is...

If truth in advertising were applied to slot machines, they would have a statement posted that says "There is no way you can determine the odds of winning on this machine, because we have the right to adjust the payout at any time without notifying you.

If your employer had a similar statement about your paycheck, it might say, "We cannot predict the amount of your paycheck, or even if you will receive a paycheck this pay period." "Enjoy the nice musical notes that are being played."

Your first sentence is the #1 myth of slot machines. They are set at the factory and are usually not changed for the life of the machine. Under current technology on cruise ships there is not a little man sitting behind a curtain changing the win payouts. I realize ships casinos are not the same but in land based casinos it is actually illegal to do so unless the regulatory authority is present. Basically, changing the odds requires changing out a computer chip that costs almost as much as buying a new machine. Frankly, they don't change the odds because they do not have to, they are set at the factory under the owners specs and they will always win. All this info is readily available on the internet from objective sources.

Untrue. However, the difference between six decks (the standard shoe) and ten decks is miniscule (probably 0.02%). But in smaller deck games, there is a larger difference.

Video Poker Machines are unique in that they are representative of a standard deck of cards. The odds of being dealt any card are the same as if you were playing each hand with a fresh deck each time. The DIFFERENCE with video poker is in the payout tables.

The "gold standard" is to look at the payout on Jacks or Better. The best machines are referred to as "9/6" machines. The payout for a Full House on one coin in should be 9, and a Flush should be 6. I would be very surprised to find this on a cruise ship, as they are exceedingly hard to find on land! Nowadays, and "8/6" machine is considered a good find, and you are more likely to find "7/5".

The other key to video poker is to bet five credits. This is because the total payout odds improve tremendously at five credits. It all hinges on the Royal Flush. Play one, two, three, or four credits and get the royal flush, and you with 250, 500, 750 and 1,000 credits respectively. Bet five coins and you win 4,000 credits.

Now if you're just looking to have a little fun, then don't worry about it. But if you really want to maximize your potential return, then five credits is the way to go.

For Jacks or better on ships, I haven't seen anything better than 6/5 for some time now.

I live an hour from Mohegan Sun in CT & we go frequently, but I'm a "low roller", I play the penny slots. The secret is to only bring the amount of money with you that you are willing to lose. On a ship you have to be more careful, set a budget for each night (if you want to go to the casino that often) so you don't blow your week's entertainment in a single session. The trick is to have the willpower to not go back to your room & get more cash out of your safe ( a mistake I've made in the past lol). As long as you look at gambling as entertainment & not expect to strike it rich you can have fun with it. Good luck!
