Experience of non smokers

My husband and I are both avid non smokers and apart from sailing with HAL some years ago have consistently sailed with Celebrity because of their stringent non smoking policy. We did like our previous cruise with HAL and were considering a 21 day HAL cruise for a change but are a bit concerned about booking because of the more relaxed smoking policy. Looking for comments from non smokers on their experience?:confused:

You don't say how long ago your last cruise with HAL was, but you did enjoy it. HAL has not loosened the smoking policy, in fact now smoking is not allowed in any cabins.

 

It remains to be seen if more smokers are now booking HAL, and I guess that could have an impact on you if the smoking population has increased, but it's really not hard to avoid the smoking areas.

 

We had no problem on our last cruise on the Veendam and that was before the change.

You will still have smoking in the casino (and it will smell like smoke even if you don't). You don't say if you would get a balcony but if you do it is likely that you will also get some smoke there. The other area where you will get smoke is up on the decks around the pool. We seldom go to Crows Nest as it seems to attract smokers. I do not like smoke at all but I don't really have a big problem, when I encounter it I just go else where. We also don't get balconies as we have not been able to enjoy them (or it is hit or miss). I suspect the change in smoking policy where now you can't smoke in cabins will push more people to smoke on the balconies. The fact that you use the word "avid" might make me think you should stick with X as you almost have to look for smoke with them.

We are one ex-smoker (for 30 years now) and one never-smoker. We have never been bothered by smokers on any HAL cruise except in the casinos. You may get a whiff every now and then, such as when going out of the Lido to the aft pool on the smoking side, but nothing more than that. We've never had a chain smoker next to us on a balcony. Knock on wood, maybe. :)

Well, for one thing, if you are planning on booking a balcony/verandah with HAL, there will be the possibility of one/several of your balcony/verandah neighbours being smokers, who will enjoy their smoking on their balconies/verandahs, to your detriment! ;) And for another thing, if you like to utilize the casino, where smoking is also allowed, then you may need to bypass that venue too!;) I too am an avowed non smoker, who will soon be booking a cruise with X to experience their "stringent non smoking policy"! :) And we're off & running on yet (another) 'smoking thread"! :D

As non-smokers, the deal breaker with us is the smoking on the balconies with HAL. Just imagine sailing with heavy smokers on either side of you and you will find your balcony virtually useless almost 24 hours daily. If this is a factor, and it sounds like it is, then X is for you. cheers

I think they should make rooms on the port side w/balconies smoking "rooms" and the other side of the boat smoke-free. That way non-smokers can enjoy their balconies without the worry.

You can also encounter smoke on the promenade deck. I believe a smoker is entitled to light up next to you anywhere on that deck. Correct me if I am wrong. Why leave Celebrity?

That happened to us on Eurodam. A whole cruise we could not use our veranda.

We are non smokers and have cruised on all mass market lines. I have never had a problem with smokers. Its a big ship so if I find myself in a smoking area that I don't like I move to someplace else. I have never noticed smoke on the balcony. However if you have a sensitive nose I would chose X.

don't do it. please. as you are self-described 'avid non smokers' you will have a miserable time. if you do book the hal cruise, please do not come back and complain about it. you have been warned :cool:

My only complaint about smoke would be in the casino . Sometimes they use a metal trash can to dump the smoldering ashtrays in and they park that thing right next to a blackjack table. That's annoying . But as a long time ex-smoker I've never noticed a smoke smell problem on the verandas , maybe I'm just not that sensitive to it .

I'm very sensitive to smoke, but so far, luckily, haven't had a problem with it. However, with the new policy of no cabin smoking, I do think it will drive the smokers to their balconies.

Won't work. Not enough smokers to fill a side, and some non-smokers may want to be on the "smoking side". :D

That's a huge exaggeration. I doubt that the heaviest smoker would be out there more than 2 or 3 hours a day, even on sea days. Everybody has to sleep, eat, etc, etc.

Based on our experiences {25 plus cruises}, the smokers tend to be out on their balconies a good share of the waking hours and even during the late nights to satisfy their "needs". Try a cigar or a pipe smoker beside you and then let's hear your thoughts.

After having balconies several times, we no longer book balcony cabins. We've had heavy smokers next to us as well as above us. One time, we also had a non-stop very loud talker on the balcony next to us, yelling to her cruise companion inside. That was a 19-day cruise and that's when we decided - ENOUGH!

You mean they never go ashore, never go to any shows or other activities on the ship, never go to eat? I doubt it. We're probably not on our balcony more than 2 hours a day even on a sea day.

We had a cigar smoker up-wind of us once. He smoked on his balcony maybe an hour each evening. And personally I don't find pipes that objectionable.

Effective December 1, 2011 smoking is prohibited in all staterooms. Beginning December 1, 2011, Guests with a balcony stateroom may only smoke outside on their balcony.

Great info from Rounder, both me an my wife dislike smoke and had no problems at all on lasr 2 HAL cruises ( worse place I have ever been for smoke is in a Princess casino there was just a cloud over the whole room)

Rounder: Thank you for the information. I think we were posting at the same time. Not a big deal for us..we will just find our way to the appropriate promenade/deck places so hubby can get his fix. We do not have a balcony, so will not be "infringing" on the rights of any neighbours.
