And if it helps with your cabin selection, our TA told us it docks on the starboard side.
HamOp Posted February 25, 2012 #6 Share Posted February 25, 2012 And if it helps with your cabin selection, our TA told us it docks on the starboard side. Yep, starbord (right) side faces Front Street and the port (left) side faces the harbor. We did it last Aug. and are doing it again this April. I had heard last year that sometimes it docks the other way around, but that was never confirmed.
V'sGirl Posted February 25, 2012 #7 Share Posted February 25, 2012 We had a verandah facing Front Street last summer. Some folks think that it is too noisy on that side, but we never found that to be true for us. We enjoyed the people watching.

catl331 Posted February 26, 2012 #9 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Last yr. some passengers reported that there was much noise from nightclubs on front street at night. When we went in Oct.., the outside nightclub wasn't partying any more.
1025cruise Posted February 26, 2012 #10 Share Posted February 26, 2012 When I was on the Veendam last June, we docked right on Front Street. The Veendam is the only ship that cruises to Bermuda that can make it in to Hamilton.
bob brown Posted February 26, 2012 #11 Share Posted February 26, 2012 What a shame that HAL is pulling the Veendam out of the market after this season. HAL can't seem to keep a ship going in NY other than a couple of fall Canada cruises, and a couple of calls by ships on world cruises occasionally..... And next year, there won't be any ships regulary going in to Hamilton, by any line. Am glad that I will experience it this May.
sapper1 Posted February 26, 2012 #12 Share Posted February 26, 2012 The Veendam docked to starboard when we were aboard in 2010. We get to go again for one day on the Prinsendam next year on her TA to Europe so are looking forward to that. I would certainly imagine that the Prinsendam would dock right there in Hamilton. FoxyTerrier Posted February 26, 2012 #13 Share Posted February 26, 2012 On which side of the ship was your cabin? Last May the starboard side was facing Front Street. It was not noisy at all. It was wonderful being docked in downtown Hamilton. This July we are going on a family cruise on X back to Bermuda and am not really looking forward to be stuck out out in the boonies. I'm sad to read HAL is giving up on Bermuda as I really loved the Veendam and seeing Bermuda again.
Rare styles27 Posted February 26, 2012 #14 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Wow, I hadn't heard that this is Veendam's last year going to Bermuda. After hearing this, I'm very happy that we're going on her in May. I guess this will be our last cruise to Bermuda. I've done 1 that only docked at the other end of the island and we absolutely hated being way out there. It was so much more expensive to take a taxi to the beach and we felt completely isolated. It's a shame that the ships have gotten so big that they can't dock in St. George and Hamilton any longer. Our first cruise to Bermuda was on the Majesty (which later became the Norwegian Majesty, but is no longer) and she was small enough that we docked both in St. George for one day and Hamilton for 2 days. It was absolutely wonderful.
jtl513 Posted February 26, 2012 #15 Share Posted February 26, 2012 It's much nicer to dock in Hamilton, but there's lots of places in the world where the port is an hour or so away from the main city that you're visiting. Being tied up at the Dockyards isn't that bad by comparison. I can think of lots of places where there's nothing at the dock but the terminal building and a couple of shops. At least there's some things to see/do right at the Dockyards.

Not only can the Prinsendam dock in Hamilton, it could easily get in to St. George as well. The Veendam, after its expansion, was deemed too close for comfort, as far as getting in to that port.... V'sGirl Posted February 26, 2012 #17 Share Posted February 26, 2012 On which side of the ship was your cabin? We were there mid-June, and the cabin was starboard, midships.
sail7seas Posted February 26, 2012 #18 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Thanks. Seems mostly the ship does dock starboard to Front Street. We sailed "X"'s Zenith years ago and that is how she docked. Zenith could fit through the cut and we docked at both St. George's and Hamilton on that cruise.
bermuda triangle Posted February 26, 2012 #19 Share Posted February 26, 2012 My parent's suite was also starboard and faced front street. It was pretty cool to watch people. The noise level was not bad. I wish HAL kept a ship going out of NYC, so convenient. I guess it is just Carnival's turn in the HAL/Princess/Cunard/Carnival rotation ;) Laura
cruisenanny Posted February 26, 2012 #20 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Thanks. Seems mostly the ship does dock starboard to Front Street. We sailed "X"'s Zenith years ago and that is how she docked. Zenith could fit through the cut and we docked at both St. George's and Hamilton on that cruise. We did the same on Zenith and Horizon years ago, also on Song of America and the Nordic Empress, loved it!! We decided to take advantage of Veendams last season in Bermuda/Hamilton, and are really looking forward to it. We don't like being in the dockyard for the entire time either, as others have also said. We rent scooters so it is easier to get around, but still very out of the way and a long ride to get to the south shore beaches, Hamilton and St. George. We are very hopeful that another ship will take Veendams place in Hamilton after this year, but I'm not holding my breath...
Rare styles27 Posted February 26, 2012 #21 Share Posted February 26, 2012 Here's how strongly I feel against docking at the Dockyard end of the island...I live 40 minutes south of Boston and could very easily get to the Norwegian Dawn, but I'd rather drive the 3 hrs to NYC and pay a little bit more $$ just to be able to dock in Hamilton again. I think it's a huge mistake pulling this itinerary. You can't beat the convenience of jumping on and off the boat any time of the day or night. I remember a taxi to Elbow Beach from the dockyard was $70 r/t when we were there. Do the buses go out to the dockyard now? It didn't when we were there. hypercafe Posted February 26, 2012 #22 Share Posted February 26, 2012 We went many times on the Crown. She went to all three ports. We have also went and stayed in the Dockyard taking the ferry to across. I guess it's a fact that the mainstream lines are phasing out the small ships so Hamilton is out ol luck. You can't beat the convenience of jumping on and off the boat any time of the day or night. With the casino closed three nights out of seven HAL wasn't making enough. I don't know how the other lines make up that lost income.Do the buses go out to the dockyard now? It didn't when we were there. Yes. You can get schedules on line. sail7seas Posted February 26, 2012 #24 Share Posted February 26, 2012 There were also many complaints about bus service from Dockyard to Hamilton/beaches etc last summer. If HAL was making money on that cruise, they probably would continue to do it. No?
FLACRUISER99 Posted February 26, 2012 #25 Share Posted February 26, 2012 years Ryndam TA was originally scheduled to dock in Hamilton but it was changed to the Dockyard on 12/13/11.
