Dear all,

 

On my last cruise with HAL , I have discovered TV book program for our cabin, and was disappointed that I have never seen it before on the previous cruises... It was the end of the cruise, and the TV programs were closed for viewing at that time. Could someone please tell me , do all HAL cruises have little TV program books in their room and can really watch all the action thrillers and comedies just by pressing the number from the program into your remote control? Am I dreaming or this is a true? If this is yes, I have missed so much, as usually I watch useless 2 channels of old movies that are horrible.thank you

You're talking about Ship Flicks. You can research it in this forum as to what it really is, but it is not "on demand" but rather a list of DVDs that the Front Office has that you can call for and they will deliver to your room so that you can watch.

Are you talking of the little book with a list of thousands of DVD's that you can get for free from the front desk??

 

If so, then yes, this is on all the HAL ships and is free.

 

But on the TV channels themselves, no. The selections on the TV are very limited, so if you want to watch all the latest and oldest then you sign out a DVD or 2 from the front desk.

this is my "number" of cruise with HAL, and this is my first time knowing about it, this is sucks, no one ever told me that this service with DVDs is available... Not the travel agent, not any HAL rep, not the cabin guy.. I have not ever seen these DVD list books in my cabins before, other than this one time.. ???? Waw, what a discovery. So, If I wont see the DVD list program in my cabin, I should ask for it at the front office, correct? - BTW, thanks, guys for being # 78 answers, I really appreciate that LOL :)

There is a DVD player in every cabin.

If you don't see the booklet listing which titles are available, ask your steward and/or front desk.

Yes if you don't see the DVD list in your cabin, ask your room steward for it. Sorry that you didn't know about the DVD player, its kind of cool, when there is nothing much on TV.

Probably it took awhile for folks to answer because there are a lot of us who don't even bother to turn ON the TV, much less watch DVD's! If we wanted to watch movies, we'd stay home, get Netflix. Much cheaper.

I watch TV while I'm getting ready or as my "sleeping pill" :D at night. I've found the movies that they have on DVD to be really old. I don't have any time at home to sit around watching movies so it would be nice to see some new ones.

HAL lists 'complimentary dvd library' in the room descriptions. Don't blame your TA or steward for not mentioning it.

The list you saw in your cabin is the list of the DVDs available on the ship. The number that you thought you put into the remote is the ID number for the DVD that you use when ordering the DVD. There is a phone number to call to order the movies and they will deliver them to your cabin if they are available.

We too have never watched a movie on a cruise. Then agia, our charters are so busy there isn't time for that. :) We mainly watch TV to catch up on news while we are getting dressed or after waking up.

I used to see those too but my last two cruises they were not in my room.

 

The first time I asked they were printed off for me - the second time I was told they were not available.

 

On port heavy days you don't care - but if there is a good movie (the movies from the theatre are normally shown on tv the next day) it's nice to know what time it is - especially if you are 7 days at sea:)

Several years ago HAL would print a TV schedule, and leave it in the cabin. It covered a week, then was replaced.

Now, there's a TV channel which gives the day's listings, a couple of hours (maybe 3?) at a time. It cycles throughout the day until everything is shown, and takes a few minutes to complete the cycle.

Now that you bring it up, I certainly think HAL needs to really improve their TV guide menu (the overall programing menu is a 'wait & see' versus a 'moving spreadsheet' type of menu).

 

It would also be great to have the ability to check your on-board account at any given moment (such as major hotel chains these days).

 

BTW, you also might consider just having a small clamshell of your favorite DVD's that you bring aboard for viewing on seadays / or longer cruises.

 

Generally speaking, and like most folks that have replied, we look at the 'tube' for news and such while consuming a room service breakfast or dresssing for dinner.

 

However, we do enjoy a good movie on the HAL 'tube' programing (or a DVD that we bring along) for sea days & such.

When enjoying a sea day we also enjoy a late afternoon room service platter or two to make the experience special :D.

 

We've borrowed DVD's on a couple of HAL cruises and have found them to be somewhat inferior in quality (scratches, etc.).

DH and I have been known to watch a movie on a ship from time to time. He hardly has time at home as he is in his office many hours. We enjoy spending part of a sea day, perhaps if the weather isn't so great, watching a movie we didn't catch at home.

I am on cruise to enjoy the food, the weather, the beach, and the rest. yet, if there are no show that you like or tired to see the movie in the movie theather that you don't care for, - to go to your cabin at night and watch some good horror or thriller.. Usually, this is not the case, as all the movies repeat themselves and they are old and borring. Yes, is it nice to have a good TV channels or programs regardless of cruise or activites. This is my opinion. So, there is no need to critic the desire to watch TV. This is very individual, and just because I don't seat in casino till cows go home, does not mean , my cruise life is borring. peace.

And peace to you, too. I don't "seat in casino till cows go home" either (interesting twist on that saying, by the way). Everyone indeed cruises for different reasons. The only times I watch TV is to find out what the weather is outside of the ship, or the few times that I have been ill, it has been nice to have a TV to watch. But if TV watching is indeed that important to you, you could do it a lot cheaper at home.

Gee, no kidding. Thanks for letting us know:rolleyes:. I don't know why people feel compelled to keep repeating this. If you don't want to watch TV then so be it. I wouldn't make snarky remarks about someone doing trivia. I'd rather poke my eyes out then do that.
