After sailing solstice class would we like century?

As long as you know CENTURY is an older ship and does not have the same.WOW.factor as the SOLSTICE class ships. We love the S class for all the amenities. It has been many years since we sailed on the Century, we loved it when we did.

Read current reviews and decide if CENTURY meets your expectations.

After mostly solstice ships we did the canal on the Millenium. The ship was nice and we do like that size but it just didn't measure up to the Equinox.Love the beauty and all the bells and whistles of the new ships.Be sure to read the recent reviews of the Century.

We have sailed a lot on the Century (most recently last month) and really enjoy that size of ship. We have not yet sailed on Solstice - looking forward to first time in May - so we really can't compare the two.

The smaller Century does not have the "WOW" factor of the newer. larger ships. But what it does have is a more intimate experience and a more low-keyed atmosphere. We have made a lot of friends from Century sailings. One really nice thing that we liked on the Century is that ALL of the officers are visible everywhere around the ship ... interacting with passengers. They are all very available and will stop and chat with you at any time.

We sailed on Century--and Galaxy--before there was a Solstice Class. But after three S cruises, it would be very hard for me to go back to Century. A nice ship, but she is from the 90's and there is just no comparison in my opinion.

At this point I would probably not even be all that happy with M class--I really do love that wow factor!!

Cathy, I agree with your assessments. Our first cruise was in an SS on the Century in February.1999; and we were wowed. our next Celebrity cruises were on the Millennium and Constellation, a number of times. In the interim we had also cruised Princess, HAL and Royal. However, we kept returning to the M class which were our favorites; and, then came the S class, wherein we have enjoyed a number of cruises all in AQ; and, this is now our favorite

After 2 S Class cruises we had the same worries last year but wanted to try the itinerary the Century offered.

We decided to go with it and didn't regret anything.

The Century is a lovey ship with a great feel. The crew are the best and I actually preferred the pool area, it felt more spacious.

All Celebrity ships have some sort of wow factor for me, just different wows! :)

We have only done one X cruise on the Summit last September, but we're excited for our Alaska cruise on Century in May. We have seven cruises under our belts so far - including one on Oasis of the Seas, which I felt was a bit much - so I was worried about booking on a smaller/older ship, but after reading some great reviews with photos here on the forums, my mind is at ease. We know not to expect any rock climbing walls or anything like that, and we're fine with that. I think research is your friend in this case! As long as you know what to expect, I'm sure you'll have a good time!

We were on the Century in Dec. Enjoyed the ship. The crew was fantastic, nothing was crowded, ship has a very traditional feel, service was excellent. If you enjoy speciality restaurants that could be a problem as they have only Murano. We Would sail on her again

As stated above Century does not have the "wow" factor of the new S Class ships, but we really still enjoy the smaller Century ship. She was our first in the Celebrity line and we still will cruise on Century whenever we can. All tastes are personal, it depends on what you are looking for on your cruise.

Something is putting me off Century and I don't know what it is.

Any thoughts

Thanks

Century is more " closed" compared so solstice... Less open area with lots of light. In addition the following will not be present: thalassotherapy Pool, lawn club, alcoves, glass blowing, quasar, sky lounge, and complimentary Sauna /steamroom.

Expect a smaller casino, long lines in the buffet compared to Solstice class because they don't have the islands.

There is another thread going about Century that sounds like she might not be in the very best of shape. Personally, I cruised Solstice as my first X cruise, then did Millie the following year. I had a nice cruise, but was disappointed in the Millie. I knew she was an older ship, but it was just kind of depressing after the Solstice experience. I am going back to S class, Reflection in 3 weeks (yay!) and I will probably not cruise M class again, much less Century, which is even older.

Guess it just depends on the individual. In the last 3 years I have

gone back and forth from M to S to M to CENTURY....I have a good time

everytime:)...I was on CENTURY in May 2011 and I would sail her

again.

I have been following all the threads about her..sorry folks did not

enjoy themselves.

She was my very first Celebrity ship back in 2003 and have sailed

her 5 more times since then.....my biggest issue? I just have

wonderful cruises no matter what the ship......;)

  • 2 months later...

Yes, the Century has outdoor hot tubs and indoor saunas (in men's & ladies' changing rooms on deck 11 at Aqua Spa). They also have steam rooms available only in the fee-based Persian Gardens (also deck 11 at Aqua Spa).

We have been on the Century-, Millennium-, and Solstice-class ships, most often on the Century-class ships (22 times for Galaxy, Mercury, Century). Our favorite is now the Century. Yes, the Solstice-class ships are absolutely beautiful with the big wow factor and unusual things to do such as going to the glass-blowing show on the Eclipse & Equinox. I like the various options for speciality restaurants and lounges too.

But for just feeling more comfortable and at home, we prefer the Century. We were just on the Century last month for a b2b (19 nights). Before the cruise, I was not as excited about going back on the Century after two cruises on the Eclipse and Equinox within the five preceding months. Also, we were planning a "friend" cruise on the Century for Alaska in September 2014. At the time, I thought, "Darn. Why can't the Alaska cruise from San Francisco RT be on a Solstice-class ship?" Then we went on the Century again last month for the 19-night b2b. We re-discovered how much we missed being on a Century-class ship (it had only been a year). The Century has a more intimate and very classy and cozier feel with the lovely decor and amplified service and attention from crew, staff, and officers. Yes, the Century has more worn spots, but she will be undergoing a renovation in February/March next year.

After our recent 19-night stay on the cruise, we are thrilled that our September 2014 Alaska cruise will again be on our currently favorite ship, which will be renovated within the preceding six months.

For me, I miss the thalassotherapy pool only if the other pools are loaded with children. (I have seen two nine-year old girls, not with parents, empty a pool of adults who did not wish to be splashed or bumped around.) I could care less about the lawn and the glass blowing and the quasar lounge (does anyone actually go in there? The dining room on S-class ships can look quite plastic and cold and drab (one of the few areas that the photographs on the website are better than reality.) Upstairs in the dining room, the walls look like plastic crepe-paper like one might find in a cheaply done basement, with sort of neon lighting overhead.

But, the dining rooms on Century and M-class ships are warm and elegant in feel. Also, you can dance in the Rendez-vous lounge rather than at the bottom of a staircase/elevator shaft/throughway to bars area that is found on S-class ships. In the theatres of M-and C-class ships, you will have a small table in banquet style seating so that you can have drinks with some place to put them. In S-class, you have theatre type seating with a cup-holder (forget about wine glasses). On S-class, I stopped having wine/drinks in the theatre because of it.

The art etc. on any of the ships is personal. Some will like it, some won't.

The larger the ships get, the more individual shops seem to spring up rather than mostly tables in a wide hall, although they all crowd corridors with wares.

So far, we have not been able to be enticed into anything but the original specialty restaurants on M-class and Murano on Solstice. So, with a Murano on Celebrity, that would do it for us.

Yes, Century is showing her age, here and there, but that is not to say that she is seedy looking.

It will depend on what you want as to whether Century would be to your taste.

Have been on Century and Constellation 3 times, Summit, once and Millennium three times; Solstice, once. So far, my preferences are the M-class, but we are also looking forward to Eclipse in November.

Our first Celebrity cruises were on Mercury and Century, then we took several cruises on S class. Last year we did a 'back to back', getting off Eclipse and onto Century. We were a little apprehensive, but enjoyed both cruises. Century does not have the 'wow' factor of S class, but it has a great atmosphere and the most visible and approachable officers of any ship I have been on. I would not hesitate to sail on Century again.

We were on both the April 15th Equinox transatlantic and the following Mediterranean sailing (April 30th). I just have to comment that while the Century and the M-class ships lack the stunning visual of that central atrium, there are several things that I think are better done on the Century and M-class ships.

First, my husband loves to have lunch at the Aqua Spa Cafe, and the Century (and the M-class ships) has more seating space than in the Aqua Spa Cafe than the S-class ships despite the fact that the Century has approximately one-thousand fewer passengers. On that transatlantic, with all of those sea days, we only had lunch once in the Equinox's Aqua Spa Cafe since we just couldn't find any seating. Passengers were literally perched along the edge of the pool recliner area trying to cut their freshly grilled ahi and chicken with their plates in their laps.

Second, that atrium on the S-class ships allows music and other noise to travel all the way up to higher decks, such as deck 11. So folks in the library can hear what is happening in the grand foyer on deck 3 whether that be music or an amplified dance instructor teaching a dance class (fortunately automatic sliding glass doors keep these sounds from stateroom corridors). In the evenings, the music played in the deck 3 grand foyer is heard in the Martini Bar and the Cafe al Bacio. On the Century we frequently find ourselves in the Cova Cafe (the Century equivalent of the Cafe al Bacio) enjoying a string trio or soft guitar music, but due to the loud music from the grand foyer didn't have that lovely experience.

Hi,

I cruised on the Celebrity Solstice in May 2010 followed by the Celebrity Century in November 2010 and the Celebrity Summit in December 2010. Although the Century is much smaller than the Solstice and does not have the latest features, I greatly enjoyed my cruise on the Century. Due to its smaller size, the Century reminded me of cruising in the "good old days." In my opinion, the Century offers a classic and more traditional cruise experience. If you go with the right attitude, the Century still is a great ship.

Century is not glitzy, in my opinion it has much richer finishes, richer woods, leather etc. beautiful ship, but I guess it depends on personal taste. I wish the s class ships were done in the richer finishes that mimick the century.

Celebrity fast became our favorite after two beautiful sailings on the Mercury (God rest her soul). We then became totally hooked after a few more cruises on the M class -- namely the gorgeous Celebrity Infinity. But then....we tried the Equinox. OK -- I must admit that in 36 cruises -- that was the absolutely best -- shining above all others. So, we booked the Solstice for this fall -- back up to Alaska because I just cannot get enough of that place. Then, I saw that the Century was also scheduled out of SF next Sept -- so back up again -- 8th time. But -- too precious to pass up when we can sail out under the Golden Gate.

My only issue was -- as the original post mentioned -- I also questioned if I would like the Century after experiencing the Equinox and soon to experience the Solstice. I am so glad to hear that the Century is still the favorite of some -- so this helped me make my decision. I think I am going to book her this weekend for next Sept when she is in SF. You can see by my location that it is so convenient for us to just jump on that ship. Take the train under the bay and boom -- we are there. I may miss some of those bells and whistles but being on a ship without those sometimes makes you enjoy the finer things about cruising -- what made us all fall in love with cruising so much longer than all those bells and whistles were even available.

So glad someone asked this question -- and even happier someone that likes the Century answered it. I am sure we will love it -- especially after the dry dock early next year.

Cruise Raider: Are you going to do the SF cruise in September 2013 or 2014? It sounds like 2013, but if 2014, we'll see you on the cruise. We have a rollcall.

I am enjoying people's observations which are excellent ones, such as about the "richer" finishes, woods, and leather; the "classic and more traditional cruise experience"; "visible and approachable officers"; the Aqua Spa Cafe differences; "enjoying the finer things about cruising"; and the atrium noise factor on Solstice-class ships. Yes, good thing about the sliding glass doors to the cabin halls on the Solstice-class ships! I have observed that the cabins are not as soundproof on the Solstice-class ships as on the Century.

We also frequent the Aqua Spa Cafe (all ships) for most breakfasts after working out in the fitness center and before visiting the Elite lounge on sea days and before ports on port days. Also, for many lunches. We much prefer the cleaner and more accommodating environment and comfortable ambience at the Century's Aqua Spa Cafe which has the small, more private room and then an outside area. The Century's Aqua Spa Cafe is run very well under the leadership of Mario of India, one of Celebrity's finest waiters. Of course Mario may be on another ship by the time we go back on the Century in September 2014. I was so impressed with the Century's Aqua Spa Cafe that not only did I write a glowing write-up on the Guest Questionnaire, but I also filled out an Attention to Details card to commend the Aqua Spa Cafe, Mario's management, and Stanley's service (Stanley is on vacation now and going to Millennium for his next assignment).

Good to read that the Infinity is "gorgeous." We will be on the Infinity for the first time in September 2013. And then on the Eclipse in November.

Hi Tour, So glad to see someone on cc who enjoyed the Aqua Spa Cafe recently. I have read two other reports that say there is no grilled seafood offered in the Cafe a lunch on the Century. We loved lunch in the Aqua Spa Cafe, on Solstice. We alternated between grilled tuna or the grilled salmon and ordered a half carafe of wine most days. With a nice salad, our favorite lunch. Did you see that as an option on the Century?

And thanks for the detail about the Sauna, after an active excursion, it will be great.
