Monte Carlo - worth to visit?

We love Monte Carlo and it is well worth the visit. They have beautiful outdoor gardens and views, the church and palace, the grand casino and the nearby area, the aquarium/museum and so many other interesting places to visit.

I think it is worth it. I would chose it over Nice, in a heartbeat.

You could do both Nice and Monaco on the same day, but they are in opposite directions so you will be spending an awful lot of time on the train, and Ville Franche itself is really nice as well.

We used our ships offered DIY Nice/Monaco and then took the little white tourist train from Monaco down to Monte Carlo..hopped off in front of the Casino walked around a bit and hopped back on...Well worth the time for us and using the ships DIY made it very easy and affordable.

I grew up idolizing Princess Grance Kelly. Of course I had to go to Monaco.:) We stayed near the palace, didn't bother with Monte Carlo, cause we don't gamble. We also did the ship's DIY of Nice and Monaco. In Nice, you are dropped off near old town flower market. We actually took a dip in the ocean at one of the free beaches.:) The rest room was .50 Euros

I prefer Nice over Monte Carlo. Monaco is too sterile and pretencious for my liking, and pretty expensive too. It mainly consists of highrises.

Go to Monte Carlo. There is so much to see.

Palace

Cathedral

Outdoor Gardens

Oceanaire Museum

The Casino and Surrounding Area. Great area to people watch.

There is more but that is quite a bit already.

I agree. Not sure I would go multiple times but it certainly deserves a visit at least once. If you want to get around cheaply, use the bus, it costs 1€ and they are the nicest buses I have ever ridden.

We were just there. It was super easy to get there on the train from Villefranche. The info booth at the cruise terminal even had the train times listed, so we used the ipod to take a picture of the lsit and away we went. The city bus is now 2 euros, but very easy to use.

We visited the palace, the cathedral...

Leave time to linger a bit in Villefranche! We spent three days there and would happily stay an entire week. If the market is operating, look for the bags by Clementine, she really does make them. I got on her email list when I bought and have seen that she was featured in French newspapers.

Will be in Villefranche in November. Thinking of taking the bus to Nice and spending the day there.

Is it worth it to visit Monte Carlo as well??

Definitely. I don't need to go again but it was fun to walk around so many places I'd only seen in movies and watching the Grand Prix

All the best, Tony

Have been twice and would love to go back! There's quite a bit to do for such a small place. Call the tourism board and they will send you nice and informative planning information (also ask for the 'cruise booklet' and they have good discount coupons for popular attractions---they can also be picked up at the kiosks/tourist info upon arrival).

The first time, we went to Nice by train in the morning and spent the afternoon in Monte Carlo.

The second time, we spent the morning visiting the wonderful Oceanographic Museum, Cathedral, Changing of the Guard, and Palace. (TIP: if you want to avoid the line at the Palace during busy hours, buy your ticket at the shop to the left of the entrance...then you can skip the line). The audio tour of the Palace was really interesting. Went to Eze by bus in the afternoon and returned to Monte Carlo for the rest of our time.

Enjoy your cruise!

Alex,

If it were me, I would visit Monte Carlo. Having said that, I've never been to Cannes and so you'd need to prioritize your wish list. I can tell you that the train is efficient (went to Nice via train).

Have a great cruise!

I have decided to hire a car and drive to Eze then down the road to La Turbie and see what time we have. Probably have a drive back along the coast.

However, that may change. Waiting on some reviews from the same sailing

We tender in Cannes. Is Monte Carlo worth it from there

We, too, tender in Cannes and I'm just now trying to get a plan going for getting to Monte Carlo. We will be there during the GP (qualifying) next year.

Appreciate the info that folks have already provided.

Since everyone is giving their opinion we will add ours. Based on lots of travel in the south of France we consider Monte Carlo to be among our LEAST favorite places. In fact, when we are on long driving trips and happen to be passing by Monte Carlo (happens a lot when we drive between Italy and France) we make it a point to bypass Monte Carlo. Now you might ask why we dislike the place and our answer would be its not so much that we dislike Monte Carlo as we like every other place in the region a lot more :)
