LadyBesu Posted May 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 10, 2013 Hi, all! Long time lurker, first time poster. We'll be taking our first cruise in a few weeks, on the Golden Princess. I know we can bring aboard two bottles of wine. What's the best way to tote them? The Princess FAQ mentions that luggage is scanned and any extra alcohol will be removed. Does this mean we just pack the bottles in with our clothes? I guess we should pack a corkscrew, too? Thanks!
Rare Scrapnana Posted May 10, 2013 #2 Share Posted May 10, 2013 (edited) Welcome to Cruise Critic! Your best bet is to put it in your carryon. It won't get slammed around like the rest of the luggage. Go ahead and pack a corkscrew. Have a great cruise! SwissDave Posted May 10, 2013 #3 Share Posted May 10, 2013 Only put it in hand luggage. If you put it in your case there is a risk it might be removed. However, the enforcement of the updated policy seems to be very hit or miss, and with wine they may just ask for the corkage fee for excess bottles. Rare Keith1010 Posted May 10, 2013 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2013 If you are not sure how the current policy works be sure to post this on the Princess Cruise Line Board. Keith

isujim Posted May 15, 2013 #8 Share Posted May 15, 2013 (edited) Be sure to check the Princess boards.............times are changing as it appears so is policy. Depending on when you sail and from where you sail be prepared to pay $15 per bottle corkage fee.........over the one bottle per person Princess allows. That said we use a product called Wine Check..........you can google search and find the company. We take an entire case of wine which is basically a suitcase that is insulated. The airlines love it because it is safe. You can take 12 bottles and it weighs only 43 lbs when full. So far on the Star Princess, Emerald Princess , and on HAL twice...... it has been delivered with our other luggage direct to our stateroom. But please check the current thread on the Princess boards...........I'm sure the day is sooner rather than later the policy is changing. gerryl12 Posted May 29, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 29, 2013 We always take the wine in our carry-on, that way you lessen the chances of finding a wet soggy mess from a broken bottle. Most luggage handlers are reasonably careful but some just love to throw the bags.

Heidi13 Posted June 3, 2018 #12 Share Posted June 3, 2018 On our last Princess cruise in 2015, you were permitted 1 bottle of wine per person, at embarkation. If in your carry-on luggage, they recorded the number of bottles by cabin #. If you had additional bottles in suitcases, they were not delivered to your cabin and they were opened and inspected, in your presence, before you received them. Over the 1 bottle pp, they charged corkage.
donaldsc Posted June 4, 2018 #13 Share Posted June 4, 2018 In addition to the corkscrew, don't forget to bring wine bottle stoppers if you are planning tom drink the stuff in your room. Another plan is to bring wine with screw caps so that you don't need either a cork screw or a stopper. DON

Just remember that depending upon the cost of the wine that you bring on the the markup that the ship puts on the wine that you buy on board, you are probably ahead of the game even if you pay the corkage. If you bring a bottle of decent $20 wine on board, it is going to cost you $35 when you pay the corkage. If you buy that $20 wine on the ship, it will cost you at least $40 so you will be $5 ahead. Now if you are a wine nut and drink $50, using the same logic, you will probably be $35 ahead. The more expensive the wine that you drink, the better off you will be by bringing it on board. wheezedr Posted June 4, 2018 #15 Share Posted June 4, 2018 Ah so much true but also misinformation. To the OP I generally use one of my cloth wine carriers which will hold 4 or 6 bottles. First 2 bottles, mine and DW’s are sans corkage. Next comes the wine table which is often not yet set up or not very efficient, so you may just walk in with more bottles. Stop if asked but last 2 cruises we were among first boarding and no table. Now when you take those bottles to the dining room they should add corkage, but waiters are working hard and basically trying to keep the table flowing. Sometimes they fill out the corkage slips, sometimes they don’t. We shall see again in 3 weeks.
Rare 1025cruise Posted June 4, 2018 #16 Share Posted June 4, 2018 Again, please remember that the OP on this thread is 5 years old Rules have surely changed since then.
