I still prefer the lawn and the bar.:D

The problem is there is not enough seating by the sunset bar on a nice day

Trying finding a seat there when they have happy hour with coupons and a hot day all the Elites come out of the woodwork

They need more seating back there

Keep the grass in the centre section , more seating down the sides

I guess it was the Nieuw Amsterdam or the Eurodam? I think I would much rather keep the lawn and enjoy the extra space Celebrity provides.

Ruby Princess -- 113,000 tons @ 3,080 passengers (2 per cabin) = ratio 36.69

Solstice -- 122,400 tons @ 2,886 passengers (2 per cabin) = ratio 42.45

I wonder which ship feels more crowded? Just visualize the buffet or the theater.

We are going revisit Princess this fall to see if we are missing anything. Our last Cruise on the Caribbean Princess was not the best, but what the heck, it's been eight years since that cruise.

Enjoy!

Kel:)

From the responses this far, it would seem that the poster who said that only 1 in 100 cruisers likes the lawn is fabricating his "statistics."

Or that people who are neutral are voting for the lawn because they're not bothered about an extra pool or can't come up with an alternative, or that people are just not that bothered about voting......or even that a lot of people who don't like the lawn don't contribute to CC ;)

I thought this was a poll about the lawn club, not a thorough analysis of the pools. So far, the lawn lovers are winning by a pretty hefty margin, so there you go! Guess its not the dismal failure a few thought.

Perhaps a people's pick pool poll is required.:D

Gross Tonnage is volume under the roof.

It's irrelevant to open pool deck spaces we are discussing (where Princess is 2 times larger).

Ruby -- 770 pax per open pool area

Solstice -- 1443 pax per open pool area

Reflection -- 1525 pax per open pool area

Including covered pool on Celebrity:

Ruby -- 770 pax per pool

Solstice -- 962 pax per pool

Reflection -- 1016 pax per pool

The Lawn took 1/3 of the ship, so it affects the whole situation with open spaces.

However, "1:100 idea" was not serious. Just a figure of speech.

I am not surpised to see more votes for the lawn.

It's a Celebrity board, most voters are Celebrity long term clients.

The ship has been designed for a particular life style at sea.

This is my grandpa style.

He has some mobility issues (no jogging/strolling promenade needed for him), arthritis & some extra weight (no swimming pools for him), morning stiffness (only room sevice in the morning), skin cancer (no sun tan), hypertension (no heat), diabetes (no afternoon tea for him).

So..... he votes for a balcony "promenade", sitting and talking somewhere in a lounge inside the ship, "tanning" under the roof and "swimming" on the grass lawn.

Please do not confuse what the ship has been designed for with actual passenger composition on a given cruise. There is never a 100% match.

Many people prefer floating hotel vacation style to cruise ship vacation style. That's a fact.

Cruising is a pleasure.

That's why Celebrity ships sail full even with no adequate pool deck space, no proper promenade deck, no hydro pool, no proper afternoon tea.

I cannot rebuild Celebrity ships.

I only vote with my money.

So my money will probably go to the future Celebrity ships - hopefully they will offer more than a floating hotel style cruise vacation. :)

Back to poll question.

I voted for the pool because pool deck deficiency was the most irritating deficiency I experienced on Celebrity ship (lack of promenade deck was the second).

I realize that I don't below to Celebrity target group but I sailed with them anyway and this is how I vote.

For many of us, there is much more in life than sitting around a pool all day, spending time on a closed-in promenade deck, or partaking in an afternoon tea. Princess appears to focus on providing more pool areas for relaxing. Celebrity focuses on providing more variety of areas for relaxation. On my last three cruises I rarely used the pools. Splashing around in water has never been my thing, nor sitting on a lounger under the hot sun doing nothing for hours. Should I start a thread condemning pools on a ship, complaining that they take up too much space and insulting those that like them?

Nope. I realize that many people like them, so I see no reason to insult an entire population of cruising public with inane comments like "prefer floating hotel vacation style" or "this is my grandpa style". If you think you will convince us of the superiority of your opinions by insulting those of us who don't agree, you are sadly mistaken.

You have made your point - on this thread, and dozens of others, several of which you have even started. Aren't you satisfied yet that you have expressed yourself to the fullest extent? Why do you continue to beat this dead horse? You are beginning to resemble yet another classic "grandpa" trait - the grumpy old man who shouts "get off my lawn" at anyone who passes by.

News flash! There is much more to a cruise ship than the areas around its pools. Are you advocating that the entire upper decks be dedicated to pools and the areas around them? With no alternatives for people who do not need to be around them every waking moment?

Since this has turned into a "pool" thread let me offer what will be a very unpopular position. I wouldn't mind in the least if they got rid of all the pools since I never use them. Getting rid of the pools would have several advantages. First, no more chair hogs. Second, you would lessen the potential spread of illness. Third, you might eliminate unfit men in speedos. Fourth, you would eliminate wet towels on loungers. Fifth, the cruiseline might turn some of the space into revenue producing areas. I'm sure others could add to the list. My ancestors who crossed the Atlantic to start a new life in American came on ships without pools and they did just fine. Most ports of call are near fine beaches so the water lovers would not be deprived of their sun and surf.

I'm with you!!! :D

I agree. I tried one HAL ship. Never again. The ship (Oosterdam) was nothing more than a Carnival ship with a dark hull. Cheap interiors. Service was not as good as RCI or Celebrity. Of course I don't have to start thread after thread trying to force my views on others or try to convince others that my opinion is the only valid one.;)

A few days ago I was on the Ruby Princess in Dubrovnik and saw the Silhouette (which was on a chartered cruise). We were on the Silhouette last year. My favorite area on the Ruby Princess is the aft pool/hot tub areas. My favorite areas on the Silhouette are the indoor pool and the grass lawn. The Ruby has no indoor pool. We had a great time on the Ruby but as we sailed away, we definitely wished we were on the Silhouette...its a wonderful ship!

The newest Princess ship (the Royal Princess, which I have not been on) has no indoor pool, no grass, and no aft pool. In my opinion (formed from photos and posts, not first hand) is that with the exception of the buffet layout, the Royal Princess takes the worst aspects of the S-Class and Gem/Grand-Class ships---including pools, bathrooms, balcony size, no real promenade, lack of stairways, no observation "club" type place.

My ancestors also crossed the Atlantic via a ship to start a new life. However, it was their mode of transportation, not a vacation. Big difference.

Yes, I prefer a mixture of both, a vacation while being transported from one interesting place to the next.:D

The great thing about the S class ships is there is something for everyone.

It's amazing.

We talk about missing open pool for adults (available on all major ships from Cunard to MSC) that is a must.

We talk about missing proper promenade deck (available on Cunard, HAL, Princess, RCI, Costa), etc.

We talk about the lack of the core feature in spa - hydro pool (available on Cunard, HAL, Costa, new Princess)

We talk about afternoon tea tradition being ignored (thoroughly followed on all classy ships).

Huge parts of cruising experience are missing.

How is it possible to say that "there is somethig for everyone"?

Sorry, but the majority of the "we talk" on this thread seems to be "you talk."

As for the new Princess? If by "new Princess" you're referring to the Royal Princess, that ship has come up short judging by all the feedback from those who have sailed on her.

(And I will take Celebrity over Costa or MSC any day of the week, thank you very much.)

Never use an outdoor pool or lay on the deck in the sun, but do use the covered pool, our balcony or the Lawn Club

Tried walking a promenade deck - boring

Never go to the spa but did get my hair cut once

We have early dining/DH hates tea so wouldn't go anyhow

On sea days love to sit at the aft bar and watch the wake and if it is not so nice, the Sky Lounge. I go to the lectures, the Casino, - the teck guy from the ilounge had standing room only in the Celebrity Theatre - learned lots and had fun - this was free and totally different than the classes. We really like what Celebrity offers and if pools/tea and promenades were important to us, I guess we would cruise another line

Of course, you are absolutely correct!! The only reason I sail on Celebrity is because I am being held captive against my will, and am forced to endure these excruciatingly substandard cruise conditions. Please, RESCUE ME, Mr cruisetrail, before I am imprisoned on yet another Celebrity ship. Hurry! I am in desperate need of your anal skills to save me from hell on the open seas - oops, I meant analytical skills. (Damn spell checker!) So sorry!

What the heck are you rambling on about this time? You so remind me of some of my poor senior citizen friends who unfortunately now reside in an assisted living home and spend their time confused and talking nonsense.

Regarding the points YOU are talking about:

- A covered pool is only good on sunny, warm days. On Celebrity, we have the wonderful luxury of using them in inclement weather, when passengers on the other ships you mention are forced to scurry inside to avoid the weather.

- A promenade deck is a waste of space, providing views in only one direction, with the ambiance of a storage shed due to the underside of lifeboats and winching equipment being fully visible a few feet above your heads.

- Celebrity has the T-pools on the M class ships, while the S-class has a nice, larger, deeper pool to actually swim in rather than wallowing in heated water like a bunch of vegetables stewing away.

- I cannot understand the requirement for an afternoon tea to make a cruise experience complete. If you must include archaic practices to feel the full experience, then let's bring back full formal dress during all dinners, smoking allowed everywhere on board, and, of course, the wonderfully quaint class system.

Like someone else has said - YOU talk about these, not WE. I'm not stupid, so in my world if I don't like something, I avoid it instead of constantly complaining like a child who's slice of apple pie is smaller than his sibling's.

Since you feel there isn't something for you on Celebrity ships, be a man and dare yourself to only cruise on the ships you do like. And leave the rest of us in PEACE!!!!

I am thinking of a famous W.C.Fields quote: "Go away kid. You're bothering me"
