calliopecruiser Posted October 25, 2013 #7 Share Posted October 25, 2013 DH Dear HusbandDD Dear Daughter DS Dear Son DW Dear Wife GM Grand Mother GF Grand Father MO ? TA Trans Atlantic or travel agent MDR Main Dining Room MTD ? SIL Sister in law BIL Brother in law BF Boyfriend GF Girlfriend HMC Half Moon Cay PC Port Canaveral NYC New York City FLL Fort Lauderdale and there are more of them To make it really difficult, some of the acronyms, like MTD are specific to only one cruise line. MTD is My Time Dining - it took me a while to figure that out. And some of the acronyms are about ship names, or about cruise lines (RCI = Royal Caribbean International, RSSC = Regent Seven Seas Cruises). At least "acronyms" like FLL aren't really acronyms at all, they're IATA official airport designations for that city.
Sinppu Posted October 25, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 25, 2013 (edited) MTD is My Time Dining. CD is Cruise Director. OBC is On Board Credit. Rare puppycanducruise Posted October 25, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 25, 2013 There is a 'sticky' with common acronyms on the Holland America forum. It covers many of them but I doubt any list would ever be complete.

hallasm Posted October 31, 2013 #14 Share Posted October 31, 2013 Crazy thing is ... the common ones seem to become a normal way on the boards.~~~ Except that the 'common ones' are changing from board to board - this thread is the 'New cruisers > First Time Cruisers' Board! - When I'm visiting new boards, I'm really struggling. HMC does mean 'Half Moon Cay' at the Carnival Board and 'Halifax Metro Centre' in Halifax, Canada.

relic2 Posted November 2, 2013 #16 Share Posted November 2, 2013 MO=move over. Referring to an offer from a cruise line to "move over" from the cruise they booked, to another similar cruise.
reedl Posted November 13, 2013 #17 Share Posted November 13, 2013 Technically most of them are not acronyms but instead are called initialism. An acronym is a pronounced word made up of the first letters of the words. Scuba is an acronym for "Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus" DH is not an acronym since you never pronounce the word DH. Sorry to be picky, but it is true. SteveH2508 Posted November 14, 2013 #20 Share Posted November 14, 2013 It is a part of 'being in the gang'. Many professions use it - I'm a teacher and the acronyms used in education are mind-boggling. As for the British Army - don't get me started on their acronyms and abbreviations!
