At the End of Your Cruise?

Maybe I am wrong, but I always "pay up" the day before disembarkation.

 

 

We've done this ever since the cruise that we "lost" our steward the morning of disembarkation. His contract was done, and his replacement was busy cleaning the rooms that had been previously assigned to our steward. Our steward was already off the ship and on his way to the airport by the time that we had returned from breakfast.

 

From that time forward, we've always left an additional gratuity in an envelope addressed to the steward on the bed on the last night of the cruise.

I am still curious what prompted this question.

 

for us, we always shut the door no matter when we are going.

 

So yes, when we leave the door is shut and we leave the 'make up room' sign so they know we are gone if we don't see them.

 

We tend to tip the night before as well as the odds of seeing them in the morning can be good and can be tricky :)

Interesting question, but I don't know the answer, kazu. Sail posted it...with so many cruises "under her belt", I think she would be a pro regarding disembarkation protocol.

Believe me, they will be around in the morning, if you wait to give them an envelope in the am. We have seen stewards have also sorts of tricks, to get you to tip them early. We have even had stewards tell us they were being transferred to another ship a couple of days early, did not happen.... we wait til the morning when we are getting off, never had a problem finding the steward, we have over 50 cruises.

It surprises me that about half the time when we arrive at our cabin on embarkation day, the steward has left the door open and the tv playing. It feels welcoming when we enter but I always wonder about 'sight-seers' who possibly could roam around the cabin and 'collect souvenirs' prior to us even boarding.

 

I sometimes feel uncomfortable the cabin door is open and wish the stewards always left them closed on embarkation day when their work inside is finished.

HAL cabin doors stay open unless the motion of the ocean closes it while cruising.

 

 

We always close our door when we leave for the reasons others have given.

 

We would not want someone roaming in and helping themselves to robes, binnoculars, ice bucket.....anything. We wouldn't want to be 'blamed' for removing it. We've seen too many ill mannered folks on cruises in recent years to not imagine some prankster could get into all sorts of mischief. Why take the chance?

 

 

OK, this makes sense and you seem to have answered your own question. When I saw the thread title I thought it might be about disembarkation but the question was rather strange and I wondered why you were asking.

We started leaving our tips the day before disembarkation a few cruises ago.

Not because we couldn't find our stewards, but because they're so extremely busy that last morning trying to get the cabins ready for turn around, we don't want to take up any of their time.

 

On our last cruise we left our tips in envelopes on the bed before we left for dinner. When we returned to our cabin, our stewards were watching for us and spent a long time chatting and thanking us. NOT that we expect or want that, but it touched us that they wanted to take extra time to thank us.

We close it. I do wish you could your other rooms though, I think it'd actually increase sales. For instance if we were given the chance to walk thorough the Pinnacke Suite maybe we'd entertain booking it. Without that walk throuh though it won't happen.

 

I'm certain those with insides would be very entranced with a balcony if it was their first cruise, for instance.
