visible tattoos

The only restriction that I know of on X for tattoos is that if they are on private parts of your body they should not be on display in the MDR!!!

I must admit...this made me chuckle

So, sorry if I stirred something up, it wasn't my intent. I was asking for both the dress code rule...which looking back, sounds like a dumb question....and also asking for the unwritten rule among the cruising community. Can I wear a Borat bathing suit? Celebrity sure wont tell me no because I'm covered. Would if be discouraged in the cruising community if some felt it caused some sort of disruption? Probably.

I don't feel my vacation gets to be SO MUCH FUN that it takes away from other people's fun. So if I get a feel for a small sample of cruisers, I can pack an extra pair of shorts or an extra pair of pants for a day at sea. The smallest of contributions to keep someone happy. Now, going on land, I would wear shorts because we are all kinda scattering, and, hey, it's my vacation too. I'm not trying to cower to anyone elses beliefs, but show respect for their presence in a strange world together.

I equate it to showing respect to a church or mosque you may visit by dressing/acting/speaking even if you do not practice their religion.

You are a misfit and should not sail on a cruise ship :) :) :)

I have seen folks in borat swimsuits, I have seen folks in speedo swimsuits that might have fit 20 years ago, I have seen some where I have had to almost tie myself down to avoid asking them if maybe they didn't want to cover up just a little of that beautiful overflowing epidermis, please, I have been on ships that allowed topless sunbathing where I had nightmares for days after walking though the area.

I wish we could clone your sensitivity to others....it's refreshing.

You're first line made me actually LOL

I get what you are saying....it's vacation, cut lose and have fun...I truly understand. But we all don't have the same idea of fun. Can I do beer bongs poolside? Can I smoke a joint when in port(ha...typed pot first) at Amsterdam? I know these are a little extreme.

But I also realize, I am about to go on what I would consider an expensive vacation that I am excited about......only I'm going it with 3000 other people. 1500 couples(just assume they're couples, it makes the math easier) on their own little vacation, together, but separate. I've been on 1 cruise before, Carnival for my honeymoon, so I have a general idea of how people could be.....I'm sure I've had my moments as well......but if it takes packing a pair of pants over a pair of shorts to not be the one guy in someones vacation, I'm cool with that.

I almost forgot....I'm not much of a misfit in the terms you describe....I still party with the best of them...I love my live music...in the past 3 years I have seen Motley Crue 3 times(Poison/New York Dolls and Kiss), Def Leppard(Poison/Lita Ford), Rush, Roger Waters perform The Wall, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Mayhem Fest, Bullet for my Valentine, Halestorm, the Rolling Stones and the Eagles....I have Crue and Billy Joel already set for this summer......so I'm not too old yet :D

At the risk of going completely OT, here :o: If your cruising (or land) travels ever take you to Maui, Mick Fleetwood has a new restaurant in Lahaina -- Fleetwood's on Front Street. Some friends of ours went there in March -- said it was pricey, but the live entertainment was excellent. Hope to get there, some day. Also, don't miss Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo Cantina, if you are ever in port at Cabo San Lucas. An afternoon there is definitely worth the tender ride in from the ship!

You are a misfit because you care about others....not because of the tattoos. My examples were about people that didn't care. I applaud you for your concern...".

But have a great time on the cruise and don't worry....you will look far better than many....

I was unaware of Mick's place. Will have to add it to the destination list. Cabo's been on the list for a while, just haven't got around to making it happen.

C'mom now, if you read enough, and you clearly do with all those posts, you have to admit that the OBC does exist. Seems every line has a few.

I hope that this is not what my TA was referring to when she said she was increasing her OBC offer for our next cruise.:D;)

I understand the OP's concern regarding tattoos, since there are some situations where exposing them can be considered to be inappropriate. As many others have said, not anywhere on Celebrity. Very considerate of them to ask in advance, IMO.

That was my thought also...now every time I see "OBC" I'll be wondering if it means "on board credit' or 'old biddy committee'! Love it!

Celebrity does, however, have a policy on their staff having tatoos. We had a wonderful bartender that wore a wrist protector. Chatting, we asked if she had hurt her wrist. She said that she wore it because she had a tattoo and that wasn't permitted by Celebrity.

As far as those of you with "ink", if you've got it, flaunt it now because I hope you've considered your look when you get to the "old biddie" stage.

Define "old biddie" stage...

You're wonderfully polite. Your tattoos are fine, regardless of where they are. You won't see as many visible ones on Celebrity as you probably did on Carnival, but no big deal.

As for dress code, shorts are certainly allowed in the casino during the day. I have found the typical dress on Celebrity to be more...dressed than on Carnival. I haven't gambled on Celebrity ships but am willing to bet that even in the casino, people are more dressed up in the evenings. It tends to be a trend throughout the ship at night. Wear whatever you want, I'm just offering that information so you can be comfortable. Enjoy!!

It is disappointing to me that you would feel the need to ask this question. Cruise ships are there for people to have fun They are fun and that is why so many people sail on them.

I'm curious, what other public places have you been too where you are not allowed to have visible tattoos?

It's surprising to me that anyone would be disappointed it someone's desire to find an answer to a question.

My job is in a public place...I can't have visible tattoos....yes, I know it's a little different scenario

Maybe my question was worded poorly and should have been more directed around shorts in the casino and such. I have seen different answers and descriptions for dress code on the Celebrity line. I have seen pants(jeans/slacks/khakis) are required in the evening...and here I see cruise ships are here to have fun... have fun and be comfortable........I'm comfortable in shorts and chuck taylors and a Pink Floyd shirt, but that's not ok in the main dining room.

I personally don't care what others think of my ink. I didn't get it for them. I asked to make sure I can go with what I signed up for and at the same time not cause any unwarranted stress for other passengers, not so up with the times of body art.

My disappointment is that you even have that idea. Maybe it comes from reading CC? :(If so you don't worry about it. I did not mean to be critical, just concerned that you have the idea that your ink might be a problem. Your employer needs to get in the 21st century.

I don't know, maybe I live on an island. In Nashville I suspect I'm about the only person at Starbucks in the morning who does not have ink and I've always felt welcomed.

Really, I just hate that you think that it might be a problem. It will not be.

Ha, Pink Floyd tee. Our next three concerts. Nashville Symphony does Pink Floyd in June; Yes in July, and steely Dan in August. Those were my favorite bands 35-40 years ago.:o

Good on you for asking the question. Had quite a laugh at some of the debate from it. I think it is a relevant point to ask, and while other people's opinions don't fuss me either, I have bought some fancier clothes for cruise wear. I do think the general thing on all cruise lines is for more casual dressing in general, but there aren't many places these days where you do dress up, so I do that for my own enjoyment, not to conform to other's opinions.

We spoke with a couple that were on our first cruise on Rhapsody and I think they felt a bit out of place. He wore biker type clothes and had many tattoos and she very short skirts, and they did feel that they were treated a bit differently at times. They didn't get the dining times they wanted, and were looked at a bit sideways by the "old biddies". Funnily enough they were business owners with a medical type practice that required a hard earned degree and I presumed they earned good money. (Not my business and don't really care, but they could probably have bought and sold some of the people looking down at them.) These were people that were enjoying their cruise, wearing their away from work gear, and they had a wide range of interests to talk about. We very much enjoyed bumping into them and having a chat several times.

Hopefully you will have gleaned what the atmosphere will be like and I think it is much smarter to ask before going!

On my first Celebrity cruise in 2010, I saw a couple that had ink and biker-ish clothes. Honestly, I did wonder if they felt comfortable in the sea of polo shirts and Tommy Bahama, but I assume they wouldn't be up top in swim suits if they didn't. The people in banana hammocks which fit 20 years ago and people who intentionally grill themselves like cooked lobsters get a lot more "do not stare at the odd person" attempts from me but seem to be accepted in general, too.

A pair of pants will be useful for the MDR dinner dress code "resort casual". Nice jeans also fine but the pants might also double up for a slightly relaxed formal night with the right shirt and tie, if you want to dine in the MDR on formal nights. Edited by travelpeon

We are solidly in the MYOB camp.

We do not worry or concern ourselves with what other people wear or don't wear, whether they have tattoos or any other sort of body ornaments.

We can't change it, judging others is not our thing so it is hardly worth fussing about or worrying over.

So we just mind our own business and have a great time on our cruise. And we get to meet some interesting people from all walks and all stations in life.

Life if far too short to sweat the small stuff. Edited by iancal

Absolutely HILARIOUS! ;) :D
Ouch, sorry I tried to inject a bit of humor, did not mean to crash your clique, or hit close to home.
PLEASE don't give up, but DO try to remember...

MOST (but definitely not ALL!) People of all ages and cultures respond to humor. The majority of people are (sometimes) able to experience humor, i.e., to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a sense of humor.

The (supposedly, but in reality all too commonly occurring) person lacking a sense of humor, would likely find the behavior induced by humor to be inexplicable, strange, or even irrational. Though ultimately decided by personal taste, the extent to which a person will find something humorous depends upon a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence and context. Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humor, and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences.

Satire is a genre of literature, and sometimes graphic and performing arts, in which vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, corporations, government or society itself, into improvement. Although satire is usually meant to be humorous, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon and as a tool, to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society.

A feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm—"in satire, irony is militant" but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. This "militant" irony or sarcasm often professes to approve of (or at least accept as natural) the very things the satirist wishes to attack.

Irony is a form of utterance that postulates a double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear & shall not understand, & another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware, both of that “more” & of the outsiders' incomprehension. Edited by teecee60

This, for me, is the take away from this entire thread -- how refreshing to see someone so considerate of others. Cruises need more people like you, not less.

You and your ink (and your good manners!) would be most welcome at our OBC table ;)
I'm curious about tattoos in Celebrity's dress code.

I would be surprised if there were a no tattoo policy in 2014. There is a pool area/sun bathing area. But what about restaurants or bars or the casino? What if I'm wearing a pair of jeans and a short sleeve button down shirt and tattoos are still visible? What is Celebrity's view on that?

Not talking the main dining room or places that require a suit.....could I wear a pair of khaki shorts and a short sleeve shirt in the casino? If so, I would have 1 partial and 1 full tattoo showing....issues? Nothing obscene....muppets and music.

Just curious to what the rule...written or unwritten....is and what other cruisers might think.
No rule on tatoos that I ever heard of. We saw plenty on Cunard & just as many on Celebrity.
It's funny because we just got off a 28 day cruise from Sydney to Vancouver with a stop in Honolulu with a change of passengers. On the Sydney to Honolulu portion 2/3 of the passengers were from Australia and we also spent four days in Sydney and saw very few tattoos on the Aussies. Not until we got to Honolulu and most of the Aussies left and the majority of the passengers were now Americans did we see lots of tattoos. Tattoos don't bother me, I could care less. I will say I did not see one visible tattoo on the cruise lines employees so it matters to them that visible tattoos are not shown. No entertainment dancers or singers had visible tattoos either.
We were on a R/T San Diego - Hawaii a few years ago. Celebrity brought on local Hawaiian dancers for shows and photo opps. Many of the young Hawaiian girls had many visible tattoos. Tattoos are a part of Hawaiian culture.

To each their own I say.

On a side note on a NCL cruise last year we took part in a scavenger hunt for a bit of fun. One of the things they asked for was a photo of the biggest tattoo. We raced around the ship like crazy kids looking for a young woman who we had seen on board who had a large arm and shoulder tat. We found her and when I took the photo I thought to ask her "has anyone else asked for a photo of your tattoo?" She said "yes about 5 groups. So off the cuff I enquired "have you got a bigger one." "Of course I have. My whole back is covered". My DW then followed her into a nearby bathroom and she revealed her art and let her take the photo.
We returned to the meeting point and when they asked for the photos the others all went up one by one to show their prized photo. We hung back as I guessed what the wining photo would be. After the cruise staff had said there is a five way tie I asked them. Hang on. "Are the photos of the blonde girl with the arm tattoo?" They all nodded. I then laughed and said. "Did you ask her if she had a bigger one" My wife walked up with our photo. The many groups involved and the lady in the picture shared many laughs about it for the rest of the cruise. A very nice lady despite what some of the prudes might think about her. Edited by woodyren
