kbset Posted January 29, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 29, 2015 Just curious: What are your top 3 favorite/least favorite islands and why?
Folk Singer Posted January 29, 2015 #2 Share Posted January 29, 2015 St. Thomas- wonderful place to walk around and the beaches are great. St. Kitts- once you get away form the shops at the Port and start to explore the people are friendly and the views are great. St. Lucia- views are wonderful and snorkelling great but we have never felt safe there.
Rare geoherb Posted January 29, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 29, 2015 Any of the private islands are great--Princess Cays and Half Moon Cay are the two we've visited most recently. St. Thomas is nice. We've been there many times and still are discovering new places to enjoy. I thought Antigua and St. Lucia were particularly scenic. Curacao has the most picturesque architecture. My least favorite place is Jamaica. Once in Ocho Rios was enough. We have frequently stayed on the ship in Grand Cayman to avoid the headache of tendering, but we have enjoyed the times we have gotten to the island. I can't think of a third port. cb at sea Posted January 29, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 29, 2015 Well, it's not a "Caribbean" island, but I don't enjoy The Bahamas at all. The "private islands" are almost all in the Bahama's chain, and I do enjoy them! Just great beach days!

Aquahound Posted January 29, 2015 #6 Share Posted January 29, 2015 Just curious: What are your top 3 favorite/least favorite islands and why? My three favorites in order are Dominica, Tortola, and St John. Dominica is the most beautiful and lush island I've been on. Tortola was also unique and had some really beautiful beaches. St John is just a small piece of heaven on earth. My three least favorites are Belize City, Nassau and all of Jamaica's ports.
obnurse Posted January 30, 2015 #7 Share Posted January 30, 2015 I don't think I can break my favorites down to 3! Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, St. Thomas and St. Maarten are all favorites. Nassau, Grenada, and Costa Maya would be my least favorite, but I've never been on a cruise I didn't enjoy. A lousy port day makes for a wonderful day on board the ship :-)

trish1c Posted January 30, 2015 #14 Share Posted January 30, 2015 Favorites: St. Thomas a/k/a St. Jewelry. For the same reason, it's probably DH's least favorite. :p Caymans: love Sting Ray city! St. Lucia; the pitons are amazing Least Favorite: Dominican Republic. Maybe in a few years when they develop it just a little but before it becomes over done it will be OK. But the vendors were so pushy they made the ones everybody complains about in Jamaica look polite & laid back. The tenders over were hot, noisy & leaky. Rare John Bull Posted January 30, 2015 #17 Share Posted January 30, 2015 (edited) Neither of these Caribbean ports is on an island, but they both figure from time to time on cruise itineraries: La Guairá, Venezuela. Chosen by cruise lines to re-bunker with cheap fuel. Too dangerous to venture out of the port gate unless on a tour (tours from here are to Caracas). I thought La Guairá was the a@@hole of the Caribbean. Until a couple of weeks back when I found an appropriately-named rival........... Colon, Panama. Ideally-located for ship's rail or ferry excursions to the Panama Canal. We had the misfortune to be trapped there for an extra day because our captain decided that the next day's port (Port Limon, Costa Rica) was going to be too windy to dock. Two crew were mugged that night, next day a ship's cycle excursion was attacked & escorted back by police, and cruisers who ventured beyond the few decent watering holes immediately by the port gate were turned back by police for their own safety. If either is on your itinerary, take a ship's tour or stay on the ship. Trust me, Jamaica is a pussycat by comparison. ;) Curacao :) & St Lucia :) are at the other end of my list. Dominican Republic is a country and some of their ports are great to visit and some not. DH and I spent many winter resort vacations in Santo Domingo years ago. We had a group of 10-14 couples who went every winter to lovely resorts and had the most fun. Delicious food, fabulous weather, big pools at adequate resorts, nice people, fun duty free shopping...... We had a blast. Moderate prices in lounges and restaurants. Great for young couples. :) Edited January 30, 2015 by sail7seas

AnchorsAweigh2011 Posted February 1, 2015 #25 Share Posted February 1, 2015 Favorites Islands: 1) Grand Cayman. I enjoyed Stingray City. 2) St. Maarten. It is truly the friendly island and it's a great time watching the planes land at Maho Beach. 3) Barbados. Harrison's Cave is absolutely amazing to behold. Least Favorite Islands: While I didn't appreciate the aggressiveness of the vendors at Dunn's River Falls in Jamaica, it wouldn't stop me from going back. After all, I'm on vacation and on island time.
