Casino winnings (Not about taxes)

Just Curious. If you won really big on a cruise, say $10,000, $50,000, how would they pay you? Cash? Check? Direct deposit would be good but you might not have your banking info with you. After all, I need to know for when I hit on that progressive slot machine!

And yes, I know the government would get their share.

We've always gotten paid in cash....(not that we've won much on a ship, but in Vegas we have!!)

I know it's a terrible problem to have, but carrying several thousand in cash (even large bills!) is tricky!!!

I think I could find room for it in my bra...EM

Some ships will give a check for large amounts or wire it to your bank.

I always have a check in my wallet so if I were to win huge I'd have the routing number and account number for them to direct deposit my winnings.:)

Why don't you call casinos at sea and ask them directly?:)

On our RCI Explorer cruise we saw (and heard!) a big winner and he was paid in cash. I can't imagine the feeling - the casino employee (and another one standing by to witness) just kept counting and putting bills into his open hand! It was quite interesting to watch. After he finished, he generously gave back some of it as a tip, which I assume most people who win would do. :)

There are many things that people ask that can be found by google or calling someone. Yet what would be the point of a forum? :D

One doesn't always get accurate info from a forum, and calling the source is quicker and more accurate.:)

Because that would be boring. Its more fun to bring up the subject here and see the different responses, get people thinking. Its not like I actually need to know ahead of time. Just daydreaming!

I'll bet you will get a few different responses.:)

Do they send you a 1099 at the end of the year if you win a large prize? If not then how would the IRS ever know. Depositing cash in large amounts at your bank raises flags but there is no problem with a check.

It's not a 1099 but it is a tax form given. $1200 win or more on slots. Table win tax amount depends on odds of payout. And yes the ship casino does give you one and report to IRS for Americans.

Casinos at Sea is affiliated with NCL. Just because NCL will wire money to your bank doesn't mean that all cruise lines will do so.

Not sure why you are addressing your comment to me. I didn't say anything about the ship or other cruise lines wiring him money.:)

I quoted you because you told the OP to call Casinos at Sea. But the OP did not say cruising NCL and Casinos at Sea is NCL and would not necessarily be correct answer for other cruise lines.

I never TOLD him to call anyone, I suggested it. And the rules for reporting large winnings would be the same for all cruise lines relative to the IRS. A casino issues a W-2G regardless of what cruise line you are on. That is determined by the IRS, not a cruise line.:rolleyes:

You are correct, it is not a 1099, but a W2G. I prepare taxes, and have seen them.

Form W-2G is used to report income and withholdings related to gambling. Generally, you will receive a Form W-2G if you receive:

  • $600 or more in gambling winnings and the payout is at least 300 times the amount of the wager (except winnings from bingo, keno, and slot machines);
  • $1,200 or more in gambling winnings from bingo or slot machines;
  • $1,500 or more in proceeds (the amount of winnings less the amount of the wager) from keno

Yes, that is true but OP's question had nothing to do with reporting winnings. Simply wanted to know how winnings are paid: cash, check, or wire transfer.

That is not determined by IRS, but by each individual cruise line.

Not true at all. Not ALL cruise lines give W2-G or 1099 forms. We've had big wins on RCI, Carnival, Cunard, Crystal and Celebrity and only Carnival and Cunard gave us the IRS paperwork. Just last April, my DH had two $4K wins on video poker, and Celebrity didn't issue him anything other than the money.
