Celebrity VS RCCL

Just posted the below on the RCCL board, thought I'd share. For what it's worth we had a hump cabin on Reflection. We loved our cruise, but really saw nothing different on Reflection from our many previous RCCL cruises. We really didn't see the "Modern Luxury" difference at all. The cruise/ship/food seemed for the most part no different at all from Royal Caribbean cruises we've done. As I posted on the RCCL board, we would cruise Celebrity again, but would not pay extra as the seemed no different from RCCL........

We just returned from our first Celebrity cruise after doing RCCL the past 10 years, thought I'd post a random review of our thoughts: Celebrity Reflection Western Cruise.

Food: We did the four night Specialty Dining package on the cruise. Tuscan Grill/Murano: we felt both tried a little too hard to be "upscale", a little pretentious, food OK but nothing special. Would not do either again. Lawn Club and Qsine - both awesome, food, service, atmosphere all above average, we loved them both. Buffet: average at best. I think RCCL is better based just on this cruise of course. We didn't go there a lot but did try breakfast/lunch/dinner at least once. Food options poor to average. Definitely NOT any better than RCCL and I would say poorer overall. Reflection has the "Mast Grill" for burgers which was nice. But get there early or plan on eating your burger in a lounge chair, they provide almost no seating at the grill........

Ship: Seemed very similar to RCCL. Clean, beautiful, no complaints.

Entertainment: OK. First night comedy great. Musical/etc good. But no better than RCCL. Of course no ice show.

Misc comment: Celebrity docked us in Ocho Rios Jamaica at an industrial site outside of the "downtown" area. We have vacationed in Ocho Rios and knew the area. I'd love to post pictures but am too lazy but they would be funny. Nothing but a small parking lot at an old bauxite facility surrounded by barbed wire. Still walking distance from the main area, but Norwegian has that now. We LOVE Jamaica and didn't care that much, but the area that Celebrity dumps people off at certaintly isn't very nice.

Overall comparison (Celebrity/RCCL): We just really couldn't tell the difference. Celebrity calls themselves a step up. We didn't see that at all, overall we thought this was no different than a a Royal Caribbean cruise. Ship, food, service all seemed to us pretty much identical.

We would cruise Celebrity again if the price and ports are right, but would never make them a destination based on the cruiseline itself, as we really saw no difference between this cruise on Reflection and our previous RCCL vacations.

One last thought: After 10 cruises on RCCL and just getting off Celebrity Reflection, we all agreed on one thing for sure: WE HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH LONG WAITS FOR ELEVATORS IN OUR LIVES ON A CRUISE SHIP ON SUCH A CONSISTENT BASIS!!!!!!! We have no physical restrictions and use the stairs a lot, but if going up many floors we will use the elevators. I could not believe the waits for elevators ALL WEEK LONG (excepting of course early morning). Celebrity needs to reprogram their elevators, there is something very wrong with them at least on Reflection.

I agree they're more alike than different. Here are the things that stand out to me:

To us, Celebrity's buffet was FAR better than RCCL's. Especially the made-to-order omelets and waffles. (Pancakes on RCCL were absolutely inedible!) We also love Celebrity's homemade hard scoop ice cream in the buffet...to us, is far better than the dirty pool side soft serve machine on RCCL.

We also think Celebrity's cabins are a bit more nicely appointed, and their live music venues/lounges are nicer in the pre-dinner hours (we couldn't find any live music before 9:30pm on RCCL).

Lastly, the adult area/solarium on Celebrity is much nicer and more peaceful than RCCL, in my opinion.

I wouldn't pay a ton more to cruise Celebrity, but honestly, these days, with RCCL's bogus sales and BOGO nonsense, Celebrity is pricing out cheaper than RCCL anyway!

My Husband and I always cruise celebrity and my sister always Royal but this year she tried the Eclipse. Her feedback was almost identical to what you have written. They did not think the food was as good on X and dined in the speciality restaurants 6/14 days they came home a little disappointed as they thought there would be marked differences but they didn't find any.

thanks for posting as I like feedback from people on what's out there. thinks we will try other lines as the prices on X can sometimes be higher.

Just thought of two more things that are really important to us in choosing X over RCCL: the non-smoking policy. Casinos on RCCL are so smoky you can't even go near them.

Also, we like that folks adhere more closely to the dress code on X. Makes for a more elegant experience.

Celebrity calls themselves a step up. We didn't see that at all

Where does Celebrity call themselves a step up? I've read many posts on CC in which PASSENGERS claim or believe that X is a "step up" but I don't recall every reading or hearing where X themselves had made a statement like that.

As for the buffet, we seldom eat there but think X far surpasses RC. The made to order pasta station alone is enough to entice me up there a time or two during each cruise. To each his own though.

As for price, it is all driven by supply and demand.

Both are mass market lines that are more similar than different, but we do find the smoke-free casino on X to make a huge difference.

We love both lines but tend to choose one or other depending on how lively we want our cruise to be. RC if with younger children or we want a bit more action. Celebrity if we want peace and tranquility.

The other difference for us is the higher end staterooms. On Celebrity we can book the royal suite or the penthouse and have two separate rooms (ideal when our adult son sails with us). On RC we have only their top room royal suite which gives us this option. Celebrities suite perks now really are substantially better than RC's whereas only a year or so ago you got very little for being suite guest on Celebrity.

Would I regularly choose Celebrity over RC? Yes, at the moment because it offers those small differences I want. Does it mean Celebrity is a better cruise line? Not really, just slightly different.

PS. At the Embassy suites overlooking the Equinox, two hours from boarding.....

We used to think Celebrity was far superior to RCL and all the others. Not any more. 11 of our last 12 cruises were Celebrity. Our next four are RCL. We think RCL has far superior entertainment and cost less. Not going to go into detail because I'm don't want to get slammed for not thinking the sun rises, and sets, on Celebrity. To each it's own.

We cruise both lines and think they are about equal, some minor differences but they usually offset. One exception is that entertainment is usually better on RCI. Just got home from the Quantum and the shows were great, especially Mamma Mia. Saw it on Broadway last year and there wasn't much difference, really surprised us.

Celebrity obviously markets themselves as an "upscale brand" "above" RCCL and Carnival. I doubt anyone else would argue with that............:confused::rolleyes::

We thought the buffet on Celebrity was the worst we've ever had after 10 cruises on RCCL.....opinions differ I guess.......

Hey OP. You claim "Celebrity calls themselves a step up".

Please let us know where they claim this.

Well, on their website today they call themselves the "Best PREMIUM" cruiseline. Whatever. They do claim they are better, maybe they don't use the words " a step up"...... Are you seriously going to pretend they don't market themselves as better than RCCL and Carnival??

After our first cruise on Celebrity last week we agree. I saw almost nothing that made Celebrity different than RCCL. Desserts were better on Celebrity, Entertainment better on RCCL, etc, just small differences but overall pretty much the same. We will book in the future based on price and ports, no other reason to pick from either one.

We are platinum on RCCL and was very loyal to them but after a rather disappointing cruise on the Enchantment we switched to Princess and decided to book the next several cruises with them. We thought the food was much better. But as the years passed and all the cruise lines began cutting corners, we went back to Royal. In Oct 2012 we sailed on the Aluure and the food was better and the entertainment was great, but we are older now and Royal has definitely become the family cruise line, especially those larger ships. Well we got an incredible offer from Celebrity for a Baltic cruise and decided to give them a try. From the moment we stepped on that ship we knew Celebrity was where we needed to be. The service, crew and yes even the entertainment was better than anything we ever experienced with Royal, but the food on Celebrity won us over hands down. We are from New Orleans and we are definitely picky about the quality of our food and Celebrity totally met our expectations. But you know everyone is different and that's why we have so many lines to choose from, so if Royal is what makes you happy, then that's where you need to be. Happy Sailings!

"They do claim they are better"? Once again, let's us know where you are getting this info. Show us where they claim to be better.

Their website says "voted best premium cruise line by travel weekly's 12th annual readers choice awards." They are quoting a poll, not calling themselves the "Best Premium" cruiseline.

You may be reading to much into their PR campaign, which means it is effective.

Exactly, to each their own, Celebrity is my line of choice,

But having sailed on RCCL and Nowegian they are all good

Azamara was fantastic and Seabourn to me not worth the money.

I will keep sailin Celebrity though because they just fit into what I

Feel is good, sone prefer the Marriott (they are good) but I prefer

The Westin, that's not to say I won't stay in a Marriot or an Hyatt:cool:

Perhaps that's how you interpret their marketing hype, but as they are a sister company to RC, I doubt you will ever hear Celebrity actually say they are "better" or "above" Royal.

Exactly. Never mind that "best" is a subjective term and means something different to everyone. So reading that a group of anonymous people voted Celebrity to be "best" and taking that to mean that Celebrity markets themselves as a step above Royal is really stretching things, LOL.

We were on Reflection in Jan and Allure in March. I loved both cruises but we chose them for different reasons. Adults only on Reflection. Took grandkids on Allure. Had a blast on both. But... There is no comparison on food. Celebrity takes the cake. Their buffet is much better in my opinion. Fresh made omelettes and waffles at breakfast. The breakfast on Allure was not very appealing. To me the MDR is much better on Celebrity. We still found plenty to eat and didn't waste away.

We will sail both lines again but for the different reasons listed. Actually loved RCCL internet package. Was also more reliable than Celebrity. Certainly didn't feel that we got a deal on RCCL.

I have been on many Celebrity cruises, and too my first Royal Caribbean, an inexpensive early Dec Western Caribbean on Visionof the Seas with my Mom last year.

Similarities

Well lets start with what I perceived to be similarities between the two brands. Quite frankly, I found the two brands, especially the with the smaller ships, like Vision of the Seas, to be very similar, probably more similar than different. The decor of the ships was very similar, in fact there were very many fabrics and color schemes on Vision of the Seas that reminded me of the Solstice class ships. The staff friendliness and enthusiasm was indistinguishable between the two brands. The basic amenities on the the Vision of the Seas match the basic amenities of the Celebrity ships on which I have sailed both including an outdoor pool area, solarium pool, spa, assortments of bars, assortment of specialty dining venues, a main dining room and a buffet area. The larger newer ships from Royal Caribbean have many more amenities like the ice rink, in line skating, sports area, surf simulators ect.

Most of us felt that the activities staff and entertainment was very similar. The production shows in the theater were about the same quality, you standard cruise musical reviews. Both brand had aerialists, singers, and dancers and even contract with the same production company to put together the shows. We enjoyed comedians and guest singers in the main theater on both Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. Both brands utilize the centrum for dancing, shows, and activities. The centrum on Vision actually had more space than Solstice class ships, so it made for a better use of space. Both brands have great musical entertainers, rather it be the pool band or the trio from the Dominican Republic with a great lead singer who covered both pop hits and Latin dancing favorites. Both brands have annoying art actions, and port shopping lectures that are paid promotions for certain shops in port. Both brands have Karaoke and interactive game shows.

Food

Well when it comes right down to it the food was much better on Celebrity. On Celebrity the buffet was much more elegant with a wider variety of choices. The desserts were individually plated on Celebrity. On Vision they had large plates and bowls of mousse and flan from which one used a spoon to serve their individual portion. Celebrity offered fresh made waffles. I much prefer the lay out of the Solstice buffet with the stations concept rather than the buffet line format on this ship. I understand that some of the newer Royal Caribbean ships have stations rather than a line.

I liked the exotic salads on Celebrity and the elegant carafes of dressing rather than the traditional salad bar style set up with two large bowls of lettuce and buckets with ladles for dressing on Royal Caribbean. I sometimes found the display on the lunch buffet to be very unappealing. Every day they had a big bowl of spaghetti and next to it a bowl of marinara. The noodles were always hanging over the side and there was always sauce on the buffet table. I know that is really “nit picking”, but it just made it less appealing. On the Celebrity ships they had an attendant to keep the buffet looking presentable at all times. This ship had a self service soft serve ice cream machine, but only two flavors available, vanilla and chocolate. Celebrity has hand scooped ice cream in many flavors and gelato for an extra charge in the Cafe al Bacio.

In the main dining, on Vision, room I also had a few problems. I had a problem with the temperature of some of my dishes in the main dining room. I ordered the New York strip medium the first night, and it was not hot and more like medium well. I ordered it a couple of nights later and ordered it medium rare, this time it came out cold, dry and rare. I sent it back and the replacement was just barely warm enough but this time juicy and medium rare. I am thinking that the kitchen must have a different cooking system, possibly due to lower staff ratios as opposed to the Celebrity system. Of course, no cruise line is perfect, but on ten cruises with Celebrity I think I can recall having to send two or three entree’s back. We took the kitchen tour on the Silhouette and learned that they actually fire all the entree’s when ordered. I also noticed that they have plastic plate covers on the Vision ship, as opposed to the metal ones used on Celebrity. This may not insulate the plates as well, and could account for the temperature problems. I did very much enjoy the appetizers on Vision, which included escargot every night, however, sometimes they were not hot enough, and some times just right. Portions were small in each course, but this is pretty standard for most cruise lines. If after your 5 courses your still want more, then you can always order a second entree. I really liked the Civiche on this Vision of the Seas cruise and my waiter seemed to anticipate that because when I asked for a second serving, he had one waiting (for me?) on the servers station. For dessert I usually request a bowl of berries in he main dining room, and the waiters had no trouble making this happen on either line.

Service

The main area I noticed a big difference was in the staffing. The Vision of the Seas was very understaffed. There were times I wanted to order a drink or a soda and I just couldn’t find any one around. It seemed like on the Celebrity ships I just had to look up and there was a bar waiter or waiter to take my order. Some of the venues were not even open during certain times of the day, like the Enchantment of the Seas lounge, was not open during cocktail hour, which meant we were either in the trivia bar or the centrum bar. On the Solstice class ship we had a choice of several venues at cocktail hour including the wine bar, martini bar, pass port bar, the little bar out side the specialty restaurants, the navigator lounge after the Elite event was over. The diamond lounge had one concierge and one waiter assigned. The appetizers were self serve, where as they are brought around by staff during the Elite event on Celebrity.

I even talked with one of the assistant maitre d’s regarding the fact that it seemed slightly under staff. He explained that when they added the new specialty dining venues in dry dock they did not add any additional crew cabins. This meant that they had to staff the expanded venues with the same amount of staff that they had before the addition of the new venues. I always felt that attentive service on Celebrity cruises was due to the fact that the ship carried enough staff to be able to assign and move people around as necessary. We saw this when they added servers to our section when they had a VIP next to us. They were able to meet his expectations while not neglecting us, the regular guy. We saw this when they had more than the expected number of people show up for British Pub night buffet dinner. About 20 minutes into the event additional 8 servers were sent up to better staff the event. However on this cruise on Vision of Seas, we saw the short staffing to be apparent several times during this cruise. One day we waited almost 10 minutes to even get our menu in the main dining room for lunch. The waiter handling our section was clearly working hard, but not able to serve all the tables he had been assigned. Eventually an office, perhaps a maitre’d, waited on us. We were in not hurry, but service was very slow.

Wine Service

First, I need to qualify this statement by saying that I really only drank house wines on this cruise. When I cruise with my husband we have always enjoyed the experience of selecting a bottle of fine wine and enjoying it over dinner. For this cruise I mostly drank the free wine for Diamond members that was available at any bar between 4:30 and 8:00 pm. However, one night I ordered beef burgundy for dinner and thought it might be nice to have a Pinot Noir with my meal. When it came it was in a standard wine glass, not the proper bowl shape for Pino Noir. I asked if they had a proper Pino Noir shaped glass and the waiter had no idea what I was talking about. Lesson is, that if you want to enjoy fine wine with proper service and knowledgeable sommeliers, cruise with Celebrity. We have found that on Celebrity they provide knowledgeable wine service with the proper glasses and even food and wine pairing recommendations with the house wines, and even more so with the fine wines. That said, the house wine on Royal Caribbean was enjoyable, just not the total wine experience that they offer on Celebrity. We hope that the wine bar on the Freedom on the Seas will some how meet the gap between the two brands during our next cruise on Royal Caribbean.

Which Brand Would I Cruise

Most of the things I pointed out as differences were really quite minor and I have to say that I had a fantastic time with friends and family on this cruise. It probably seems like “nit picking” but I wanted to offer specifics between the brands. I could have just said that I thought the food and service was better on Celebrity, but I had heard that in a general sense from other cruisers for so long that I wanted to provide specific examples of the difference. I think that Celebrity Cruises will always be my brand of choice because of the better food, service and sommelier staff, but with that being said, depending on the ship, itinerary, and my travel companions, I would gladly choose Royal Caribbean again. I have a Celebrity cruise scheduled for this year, Solstice to Alaska in June, However, for a family reunion cruise with 5 young adults, we’ve selected Freedom of the Seas for next Christmas.

I'd be interested in trying RCCL again, can you tell me which ship(s) would be closest to Refletion in design and beauty? I'm not interested in the mega ships like Allure, so what would be the closest to S Class on RCCL?

I don't think RCCL has ships comparable to the S class. Size wise, you could look at Freedom class ships, but they are a lot more "glitzy" and not as elegant, simple, or low key as S class...they have a main promenade, rock wall, flow rider, ice rink, etc. More suited to people with kids, or people who like a lot of action.

The Quantum class (which is new) might be more comparable to the S class, it still has all the bells and whistles and action, but design-wise, looks more modern and elegant. Very mixed reviews and high prices, though.

I haven't sailed Celebrity yet - booked first time for 2017 - but our favorite RCCL class is the Radiance class for the outward views and outdoor Windjammer seating area. Beautiful ships and a nice size for us. The cost cutting has gone to far though, IMO. I know, all lines are making cuts...

Compare Celebrity and Royal in same way you might think of Ford and Lincoln or Toyota and Lexus.

Both have similarities and differences.

We sail Royal when we want more active experience onboard and especially at night, travel with our kids/grandkids.

Entertainment is the one area I'd say RCCL is superior.

Everyone says food is subjective and this thread sure proves that. We've been on two RCCL cruises and the food was generally awful, in my opinion of course. I loved the salad bar in the MDR at lunch but the regular MDR food and buffet were way below all the other lines we cruise. We've found the food on Celebrity the best of all the lines we cruise.

We cruise based on price and itinerary and would cruise RCCL again if the price and itinerary were what we were looking for.
