Compensated by RCCL?

Just making an observation. While I think the OP might be out of luck, I don't have a problem with them filing a claim. The worst that could happen is they say no. ;)

I think damage to a camera would be covered under your travel insurance. You should probably file a claim with that company, considering the fact that you filed a written report with the cruise line. You should have received a copy which can be filed with your insurance claim. :)

Just off LOS and was wondering if anyone ever received compensation from RCCL on valid complaints?

my camera was damaged. the screen was cracked during embarkation (the one piece of luggage that the pier hand wrote the info, didn't show up), filled out accident report with concierge and complained at front desk (no credits, no discounts, no nothing) and it will cost me about $100+ to repair the fuji screen.

i've sent a valid complaint to rccl, and we'll see what happens.

Sorry this happened to you, but as others have said, HOI, carry valuables etc.

 

I am sure you are upset, but I don't know if I consider it a "valid complaint" when you had it packed in your luggage.

 

My valid complaint, that I did not receive any compensation for was in the MDR, the morning of disembarkation. A coffee carafe exploded on me, some got in my eye. They compensated me by making me see the ships doctor (luckily we were staying in San Juan for a few days) They gave me eye drops and burn gel and told me to see an optical doctor when I return home.

The poor OP has come here for advice on compensation and you're all focusing on the fact that camera was packed in their luggage. So they pack their camera in their bag ... It's their choice ... How about commenting on the question that was actually asked.

 

One that note ... If Royal aren't playing ball, then try your travel insurance or your contents insurance.

 

Why should Royal play ball? How does one even go about proving it wasn't cracked prior to the cruise?

It's a foolish choice. Even if the porters take quite a lot of care, checked luggage is stacked in bins/cages which can result in a lot of weight being put on it. For this reason airlines/cruise ships/hotels advise against packing anything breakable. What happened in the OP's caseis the very foreseeable outcome and they really can't complain.

 

I agree, if a bag is the bottom of one of those bins there is a LOT of weight on top of it. No reason RCCL should offer anything on this there is some responsibility to use common sense when packing.

Actually the OP sort of "asked" for some of the comments by stating in his explanation that a "valid complaint was filed." According to the Cruise Contract that we all sign (and as posted in one of the posts) Royal Caribbean is not responsible for photography equipment. Therefore the complaint is, actually, NOT valid. Royal, in a legitimate denial, will thus be blamed for, as you put it, not "playing ball."

We've had a couple of issues, damaged luggage, etc. Royal Caribbean has been more than forthcoming in a fair resolution.

I had friends who were traveling with us get compensated when RC damaged their luggage. They were very accommodating and paid the claim in a timely fashion. They do not let us bring our own luggage on to the ship and did take responsibility when it was damaged. I think it is reasonable to put in a claim for damaged goods.

After discussion(s) with the GS supervisor, we got $800 credit per for a future cruise and basically paid for one of our Oasis cruise. The problem was that when the Serenade was re-fit they added add'l speakers in the atrium, I guess to enhance the music level. This made our cabin (9078) very noisy, as it was the cabin nearest the elevators. This occurred in our August 2013 12 nite Medit. cruise and for the 1st. 3 nites we could not get any sleep as the shows sometimes went to 1am. We were finally transferred to a lower balcony cabin away form the atrium.

And anyway, how can the OP prove that it didn't happen before it went through the checked baggage?

Damaged luggage is one thing. Packing a camera, or anything breakable or of value should never be put into the luggage.

 

Everyone knows how rough baggage is treated.

 

It's also in the contract that things like that are not covered.

I believe this is a completely different scenario. It specifically says in the cruise contract that RCI is not responsible for damage to any photographic equipment in luggage. If a passenger chooses to pack it in their luggage it is their choice and they take responsibility for anything that happens. Damage to the luggage itself is RCI's responsibility, and I have also had friends who were compensated quickly for damaged luggage.

I absolutely disagree...there is a big difference between RCI accepting responsibility for luggage damaged in the loading process, but they shouldn't be (and aren't) responsible for damage to the contents of the bags, unless they did something like drop the suitcases in the sea.:p

 

Anyone who has travelled at all knows that valuables, breakables, and medications need to be kept in hand luggage and not checked. Since the OP has several cruises in her signature, I have to assume she knew better than to check electronics, rolled the dice, and now wants somebody else to accept the financial responsibility for her mistake.:(

 

I probably look like a homeless bag lady getting on a ship, because I travel with camera equipment, my laptop, iPad, etc.:rolleyes: It's a pain, but at least if I break something I have the comfort of knowing I did everything I could to protect my belongings.

 

A little OT, but we once had a United baggage handler at our table on a cruise. After his stories, I'll never feel totally comfortable checking luggage again!:eek::eek::eek:

Except the cruise contract explicitly states that the cruise line is not liable for damage to photographic equipment in checked baggage. That makes it an invalid claim.

 

If RCI gives anything it is due to good will, not because the OP is entitled to anything.

Whenever we have had problems onboard, our discussions about resolving them have always been quickly addressed. And yes when appropriate some form of 'compensation' has been offered - this has included a bottle of wine, flowers or just a simple apology from the right person.

I sent an email after my most recent cruise ...first one ever... I was not looking for a thing but wanted to point out a serious service issue that i would want to know about....they extended a $50 credit to myself and the other two people who were sailing with me... ..

Maybe we're just unlucky, but we've had a few incidents. The most serious was when my wife slipped and broke her foot on Mariner (condensation in enclosed solarium area made tiles extremely slippery). Crew was very attentive. Doctor attended to her on ship no charge, RCL reimbursed us for out of pocket (after health insurance) medical bills at home, and they gave us a certificate for a free cruise. Lousy trip for dw, but kids loved it when we went to Disney World after disembarking and mom in a wheelchair got them front of the line privileges.

 

On another sailing we had a suitcase damaged during embarkation. They somehow took it away, repaired it and returned it. On another occasion waiter in mdr poured liquid butter down the back of my suit jacket. He took it away, had it cleaned and returned. In both cases no additional compensation needed.

 

Last spring my wife had a terrible tour. It was informational in nature and bus driver didn't speak English and wouldn't leave bus to escort group around sights. Also, hot day with a/c broken. She was furious and demanded full refund. RCL would only give us 50% because that's all tour operator would approve.

Thank you for understanding. The camera was accidentally packed along with the extra luggage tags and the stapler that I couldn't find to finish putting the tags on the bags. :D

Yes, I received both cruise fares back in a future cruise credit. I went straight to the top because I knew customer service wouldn't do what I wanted.

Wow "BOTH" cruise fares back, what may I ask was the compensation for?????:confused:

OP - you're SOL. Cruise contract expressly excludes any liability for packed electronics. Next time carry it on your person. Who knows, though. You may receive a token credit - but I seriously doubt it.

So how does an accident on your part make it something that Royal should pay for? As others have suggested this would be what your house insurance would be for.

Was it in checked luggage?...A good lesson as to why to keep these with you in your carryon. Best of luck hope all works out well for you.

 

I agree I put nothing of extreme value in my checked luggage. Except my clothes and what not.

 

Delta airlines destroyed a piece of my luggage a few weeks ago. Still waiting to see what they will do for me.
