Passengers behaviour!

I think many take the "cruise critic" name literally :-)

My take is OP's intent was for advice in case it occurs in the future, so..... I would knock on their door and ask nicely if they would lower their voices. If they are hostile/argumentative, I would call guest services and ask for security to intervene. I see nothing wrong with asking them first and believe most people would welcome communication over security reprimands.

My experience: I was with a group of friends not long ago in a "close" neighborhood. We were on the patio in the wee hours and a man came over and asked us to keep it down. He was apologetic and said his wife made him come over! lol We immediately complied and there was no question that we were loud (another neighbor confirmed this the next day in a conversation). Sometimes mixing fun, friends and alcohol, it's easy to be inconsiderate without realizing it at the time. I welcomed his communication and believe most people would.

It wasn't even just the name calling either. What I found ridiculous was people excusing others being inconsiderate at 3am in the morning and essentially getting on OP for wanting some peace and quiet at 3am in the morning! Like I said in an earlier post, OP wasn't at the buffet in the afternoon complaining about noise. OP is wanting to get some shuteye at 3am!

The beauty of a cruise ship is that there is something for everyone. Some people even refer to the newer ships as floating cities.

Cities also have something for everyone. Only want a light bite for dinner, try the buffet. Fancy a nice dinner, go to a restaurant. Want a quality dinner, try chefs table (or equivalent.)

Want a quiet drink, then there'll be a bar with a pianist or guitarist.

Want to gamble, the casino. Want to dance the night away, then the disco or club. Stare out to sea on the promenade deck or many other activities.

Your stateroom is the residential part of this "city". The odd party, to a reasonable hour, will be tolerated.

3AM would not be expected at home, it shouldn't be onboard.

And yes, we've all paid our money, but that doesn't give anyone the right to forget our responsibility to be socially aware.

Perfect example, on my next Cruise I am booked in a spa suite with a hot tub that's party central. On are we dance official site they even have in the job description of the butler one of the things he can do is organize a party in your room if you have a lot of friends on the cruise. If the room was not meant for partying and why would that be one of the Butlers official job descriptions? Its either the or concierge I cannot remember for certain lol. But it was one of them

You're in the Haven on the 3 day before me, correct? I can assure you that your butler will not organize a party at 3 am. If you wake the other haven guests with your noise, I would expect them to be the first to complain.

Party does not have to equal non-stop noise at all hours.

Please, please, please, can you video it when you ask your butler to arrange your party for you, and post the video on your YouTube channel.

It'll get loads of views, I'm sure.

I simply don't understand. There are Cruise for the elderly, from what I've heard some of the more expensive lines tend to only attract an older crowd. If you are sensitive about noise why not Cruise those lines? Yes you have the right to Cruise whichever one you want but Norwegian is now purposely attracting that younger crowd so there's going to be a lot more noise and partying on those ships.

Why not keep your party in the bar where it belongs?

I'd rather he post a picture of how many people he can fit into the 'hot tub" at once. I bet no more than two people can get in with water above their waist, three if they are small.

OMG What makes you the "acceptable police"

Did you ever think that people cruise to have fun? To have laughs? To enjoy THEIR cabin? If you have the issue buy some earplugs or book the 2 adjoining cabins for yourself.

Sheesh

Smoking police, cabin police, but yet no buffet police. I pay more for insurance due to obese people but they complain incessantly about smokers saying their weight does not affect me, yes it does, every month when I pay my insurance bill.

I am not the "acceptable noise police" - society is. NCL has the last say onboard their ships as to what is ok and what is not. I would hope that their policy would follow reasonable people's expectations. Which, if you look at the conditions of passage, it does.

It is not "Their cabin" it is NCL's, we are guests on their ship.

There are buffet policies in place - using tongs to pick up food, not reusing dirty plates, not pushing in front of people. And I do believe, the larger person ( or any buffet eater!) pays more for insurance in part due to the cost of smokers health problems?

The consensus of opinion seems to be that I am reasonable in expecting to be able to sleep in the cabin without being woken at 2/3/4am every night.

Not sure if you're referring to the Jade two week cruise out of Venice but the op is. I can tell you first hand that the vast majority of passengers have not spent thousands per person just for the bed they're sleeping in, not to mention likely double that per person for tours, airfare, pre and post cruise... Only to stay up partying all night for two weeks in their staterooms. The Jade Europe cruises are not billed as a weekend party boat.

I had my two college student kids with me and by day two of our neighbors keeping us up they actually are the ones who suggested we call and complain because at 3:30 am they were still at it. The Jade passengers are quite diverse on this cruise. Our neighbors happened to be four German pre teens who spoke little English. Trying to communicate with them was difficult and so I let security handle it, which they were more than happy to do. They were not allowed in public places after a certain hour due to their ages and they were also not entitled to scream, laugh and bang on the walls in their room either. Not only did the Jade security take immediate action but they also called us several times to ensure the girls had quieted down.

I can also tell you that even in public areas the staff were not tolerate of unruly behavior. My daughters were in blue lagoon with a group after hours . They said that the staff told some girl who had way to much to drink and was obnoxious that they would have security come remove her if she didn't quiet down.

It would be under this youtube name; Shady C Network...

Do a google and look it up, quite illuminating.

They certainly will organize a party. They will set up bar service and arrange various party trays. They have a price list of liquor by the bottle(s), what mixers are included, and the food trays.

What I doubt they will do 'tho, is send out invites or provide the above in the wee hours of the morning out of consideration of your neighbors :-)

It is likely if your party, regardless of time, is audioably rowdy, there will be complaints.

IOW, your idea of a party and NCL's are quite different.

As I was reading your post I was actually agreeing with you even when you said unreasonably imposing on your entitlement I don't however see how loud noises at night is imposing on your entitlements, some people such as myself only Cruise once or twice a year so they tend to go a little wild and crazy on those few and far between cruises. I'm not somebody who Cruises every other month like some of you probably are.

I don't however see how loud noises at night is imposing on your entitlements, quote from your previous.

I would normally assume you are making a good joke with that statement. However, I guess you're actually serious. Ya know, if you really don't understand...well....I really don't even know how to answer. Loud noises, sleeping people, extreme disturbance...it all seems like such a basic concept to me. Oh well.

However, I'll repeat what others have already mentioned. The ship is full of areas, bars, clubs that invite you to party, drink, dance, puke, sing, stand on your head, do it all until the sun rises...or the venue closes. But....the cabin deck hallways and cabins themselves, after a reasonable hour each evening are not for those activities. I now realize you just don't understand, but the huge majority of the other guests are trying to sleep during the late night hours. And yes, they are very entitled to do so without unreasonable disturbance.

Why would anyone come on here and post that they plan to be inconsiderate to neighbors? That's flat out stupid.

Especially considering he's on the Escape 3 day after the Trans Atlantic, with travel agents & VIP's galore as neighbors. See how fast Security gets there if Andy Stuart calls & complains:D

Thanks for the suggestion ( and from others) but we are not happy wearing ear plugs, always found them to be extremely uncomfortable. We also like to be aware of our surroundings.

We did change cabins during the first week, NCL were as helpful as they could be under the circumstances.

That's good to hear. It's always a crap shoot on who you get for neighbors in hotel or cruise ship, and I know it isn't always possible to get moved because of cabin availability. I'm glad they were responsive to you!

We find as we get older we are more sensitive to certain types of noises. Sure, earplugs can work, but some types of noises come though as vibration. One poster said someone was kicking the wall repeatedly; that would drive me nuts!

Now that the steam has subsided from coming out of my ears...let me add, I only can cruise once a year...I go from 10 to 14 nights and heaven for bid I get a noisy neighbor.....so far, knock on wood, the only issues that we have encountered are the groups that hang out in the hallways late at night continuing their evening.

Someone kicking the walls!!! That's outrageous!!

And, Motleyfan, I do take offense to the term "there are cruise for the ELDERLY"!!. I may be "older" but what is your interpretation of "ELDERLY" 40,50,60,90?? I may be able to get senior discounts where ever I can, but I certainly am not "old" I can enjoy myself to the fullest, even with the young folks I may be cruising with.

Anyone, can you find a cruise for just the "ELDERLY"? Maybe we should all book a "dinghy" for Motleyfan.

Wow

What started as a simple thread of an OP just venting about the noise on their cruise has morphed into something crazy.

All I can say is that I am extremely THANKFUL that every time I have cruised my neighbors have been extremely courteous and not been up partying all night loudly. I have read many threads like this where people keep the balcony door open, party on the balcony and their TV is all the way up at 3 am.

Why would anyone attack the OP for venting about this? Yes it would definitely impact your vacation. I had to laugh at the comments "you are on vacation, so who cares."

This did happen to me and my wife once but it was at a hotel. A party crowd showed up at the hotel around 11pm and for hours all night they played loud music and visited eachother in their rooms. The doors would slam, people would shout down the halls, and party in the room all night. We called security about 1am but that did not do anything. The next day we changed our room. Its easier to change a room in a hotel rather a cruise ship. You pay good money to sail on a cruise ship. Your vacation should not have to be bothered by inconsiderate people who have no cares about anyone else but themselves. Sadly manners are not taught anymore.

So, I cruise only about once every 7 or 8 years -- so does that mean my needs are more important than yours? Regardless of how much I want to enjoy my vacation, I still respect that fact that the space is being shared by a variety of people with different vacation needs. A little courtesy goes a long way towards allowing everyone the maximum enjoyment of their trip.

As I said in my earlier post -- feel free to party to your hearts content -- but if you need to do it loudly, in the middle of the night, do it in the appropriate areas of the ship. The cabins have beds -- the purpose for which is sleeping. Lots of people do that in the middle of the night. The ships have bars and lounges perfect for late night partying -- use those and have a great time all night long.

Agreed. And at the risk of this post being deleted - Im in my early 30s and i shudder at the thought of having the misfortune of being placed in a room next to someone like Motleyfan (any post I've ever read from him seems to be offensive in nature one way or another, i seem to recall his inappropriate comments about women going topless last year)

If you want to be loud there are more than enough venues to do it at, when you're in your cabin which also happens to be located by other surrounding cabins please exert the courtesy of being quiet especially after 11pm. Its the same if you were having a party at your home/residence, theres a noise limit cut off - try to respect that.

He will never get it. You need respect for people to get anything. That he is sorely lacking.

I always say you can get older without getting old. I've met women in their fifties that can out party me lol. When I say elderly I pretty much just me in the mindset of the person. In my mind you can be 20 and be that annoying person that whines about the noise.

Of course, if you wish to be assured of quietness, serenity, and the chirping of crickets, then there is always Holland :)

Lmaoooo it seems like that's what some people want, the crickets chirping. You are right I've heard Holland is one of the cruise lines that are quieter.

and then theres always going to be that annoying person that doesn't understand when to call it a night :roll eyes:

if i were to be on one end of the spectrum or the other id gladly be the annoying whiny person that respects the noise level. its hard being this "elderly" and boring but i suppose some of us have to do it :D

The idea of just waking them early is a great one, especially since I'm up at 0530 lol. Thankfully this has never happened to me. I would hope a call to security would fix this also. If security can't fix it after the second call, and the powers at be wont help, then my next phone call is to every crew members phone until I reach the captain. Every cabin has a phone and so will all the top brass. As soon as they get woken up, this problem will be solved
