Sand fleas

Last time I went to Hawaii i got bitten very badly all around my calf's and ankles. The bumps lasted for weeks after I returned home. Just went to Honolulu. Took a bus to a luau.

 

Has anyone had this experience? I don't want this to happen again. Is this common occurrence?

Been to Hawaii about 25 times, all islands...never had a problem. Except the one time I stepped on an ant nest in sandals. I knew it very quickly.

There are no "sand fleas" in Hawaii. Just garden variety regular fleas.

I have been to Hawaii 30 plus times ..... never heard of or seen any "sand fleas".

Well I got flea bites in Hawaii. I noticed them aafter the luau. I was wearing a maxi dress.

 

Hubby didn't get them so I don't know what I got into during the trip. We went almost everywhere together.

 

I remember coming home and leaving my stuff out in the garage until it was all cleaned. I don't think I ever wore the dress again.:rolleyes:

I don't mean to say anything bad about Hawaii. I'm going again in a few weeks and that experience from 5 years ago came to mind. Don't expect to experience them on the ship but will take some bug repellent just in case.

Yes, and those "garden variety regular fleas" may well have been on the ground at the luau. Your maxi dress wouldn't have offered any protection for your calves and ankles. As far as we have checked, Hawaii does not have a significant problem with fleas, and it is doubtful you will see history repeat itself (unless perhaps you go to the same luau again). Enjoy your time in Hawaii!!
