dibati2 Posted January 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2016 We sail the silhouette In a few weeks. Our first port of call is San Juan. We dock at 3:30pm. - it's Winter and it gets dark at 5:30. Just wondering why a cruise line would consider this to be a good idea for its passengers May as well be a sea day, it's going to feel like one
SheriffJoe Posted January 19, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Old town San Juan is wonderful after dark, get out there and enjoy it as I assume you don't leave till late.
az_tchr Posted January 19, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Absolutely magnificent place to explore. The fort before dark and the nearby old town after. Am jealous.

Rare Cruise Raider Posted January 19, 2016 #6 Share Posted January 19, 2016 It was years ago but we docked in San Juan at night when we were on our honeymoon. It was already dark when we went exploring. OMG -- we had such a great time. Not sure how safe it was but went jewelry shopping for our wedding bands (we did that backwards ... married first, rings later) and then met up with some friends we were cruising with and had a most marvelous dinner with cocktails. It was a blast!
oneputt18 Posted January 19, 2016 #7 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Old San Juan is great in the evening, start your night by eating at our favorite restaurant: http://www.cafepuertorico.com/html/index.html#_=_ Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
prim8keeper Posted January 19, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 19, 2016 If you like to take photos it is also a great time of day for it. We were there for the first time at the end of November. It felt like a sea day for most of the day. However, as others have said there is a lot to explore in old town. Below are two photos I took. DrivesLikeMario Posted January 19, 2016 #9 Share Posted January 19, 2016 The forts and other buildings are lit up at night and it's really pretty. You can also go snorkeling in the bioluminescent bays: http://gopuertorico.about.com/od/onthewater/tp/PuertoRicoBiobays.htm
alcpa1 Posted January 19, 2016 #10 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Having done this before it is all about sailing TO San Juan. The ships just can't make it from Florida overnight. San Juan is beautiful at night and as a port stop you will dock at Old Town, lucky you.
Desertbelle Posted January 19, 2016 #11 Share Posted January 19, 2016 I would agree with the others. We cruised out of SanJuan once and flew in late afternoon the day before and we had the best time exploring the town after dark! Stumbled onto a restaurant that was still packed at 9 pm and had the best Caribbean meal ever! Have fun!
Rare chemmo Posted January 19, 2016 #12 Share Posted January 19, 2016 (edited) We spent a few days in SJ pre cruise and did enjoy. We did, however, find it quite crowded and the sellers a bit much! Don't get me wrong, nothing unpleasant but just walking about was quite hard work. Also beware of pickpockets as in all crowded places, someone in our hotel had phone, purse and camera taken from her bag, didn't see or feel them go....It is very pretty at night! We did find a happy solution though in the horse drawn carriage rides. All the pleasure of the hustle and bustle but you are just above it! X does this as an excursion or you can do it independently. We booked through X to ensure the animals were well cared for, we had read on the internet that some are not...so be careful. BEAV Posted January 19, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Last year on Reflection, we enjoyed sitting outdoors at the Sunset Bar over drinks at sun down in San Juan. After that, we had dinner in the Lawn Club. One of our more enjoyable evenings on board!

frankdp Posted January 19, 2016 #17 Share Posted January 19, 2016 I never fail to visit Barrachina when in OSJ. Great tapas and the best Pina Coladas. They "claim" to have invented them here...... Nashna Posted January 19, 2016 #23 Share Posted January 19, 2016 You won't want to be in the dining room during the sail away. It is absolutely lovely at night to sail past the city and fort. I actually prefer San Juan in the evening over the daytime.
