Bank problem on board account

Recommended Posts

Yes, they can and do call the sheriff, if payment is not made on the ship. Had a hotel director we knew quite well on Royal talk about how no one got off his ship without paying. They would just sit them down in the office until the sheriff came. Charges can be filed and a court date set, but the guest may then be free pending court appearance in the future.

The criminal charge is defrauding an innkeeper.

Not saying this to scare the OP, but it is something others need to be aware of.

So Royal would bring criminal charges against someone over a mistake. Wow! Unbelievable but not surprising. Good luck in them proving the OP had intent to rip them off. No intent = no fraud. Period. But it wouldnt surprise me if they would try and totally ruin someones life over a thousand dollars they would likely receive within days after the cruise.

Ok.

When is the last time you opened a credit card account and immediately got the number, exp date, and code?

We applied for our Royal visa while on Navigator 2 years ago. We were approved within an hour and the balance on our seapass was automatically posted to the new credit card. True, we did not receive the actual cards for about two weeks but the account was created and we received double points in addition to $100 obc for applying while onboard.

I think the OP should try it then. Hopefully they can be seen. Pretty busy the last couple days

Works the same way as a store does their cards. We've all heard the "Sign up now and save 20% today." You can walk into any Sears, sign up for their MasterCard, and buy a new refrigerator all in just a matter of minutes. Provided one has decent credit.

First post it was $1000 now it's $5000.

I know for a fact that if you have your card details they will manually enter it, the card does not need to be swiped.

It's a bit different going into a shop with just the numbers but in these circumstances they would do it.

No, it's a $1000 that I owe, they already have $2000 in holds on a $3000 total tab.

They insist it cannot be done. I have a feeling they'll sing a different tune tomorrow when I offer the number.

Besides that, I took out an online payday loan for the 1000 last night. A $45 dollar cell phone call later and I should have that money direct deposit in my account tomorrow. Fingers crossed that works, but my debit card is now shut off because of the fraud, so who knows what will happen.

I'd also be visiting the shops onboard and trying to return the jewelry, just to get the on board account as minimal as possible. Not much you can do with drinks and consumed items, but maybe the jewelry can go back.

I don't know if RCCL shops are the same as Celebrity. I presume so since it's the same parent company. But you cannot return items for credit. You can only return for exchanges of equal value. At least that was my one experience with trying to return something bought in one of the cruise line shops. YMMV

so why was your bank account cleaned out? Shouldn't you be contacting the bank to see if it was their error. If it was hacked, won't the bank redeposit the stolen money back into your account?

That was my first thought - contact the bank, or have your friend at home do so. I was reading a ways into the thread, and starting to wonder if anyone was going to make that recommendation.

I am really confused with this whole mess. Your total sea pass account is $3,000. There are four $500 charges to your bank account, are those from the cruise line? If they are, you owe $1,000 but don't have the funds? Or are you saying the cruise line got $2,000 and some other entity has gotten a hold of your account information, charging 4 $500 charges and your bank has frozen your account?

If your account has been compromised, I don't see why the cruise line won't work with you. If you are saying you over spent, different story.

This whole thing sounds fishy. At best it is a result of VERY POOR planning for travel with no contingency plans for any sort of emergency. Except for the cats............:p

Also seems like OP should be spending more time fixing this situation and less time hanging out at cruisecritic......

I think I agree with you, after reading most of the thread. It seems highly unlikely in a situation like this that you'd get no help out of your bank, American Express, or RCCL.

Hey guys,

So I had my bank account cleaned out and my seapass is now frozen. That's fine, I only have 2 days left and don't need to charge anything. But I have about $1000 owed to Royal and won't be able to sort this out until I get home and I don't get paid until after the cruise. I don't do credit cards, so what's the deal? Anyone been in this situation? Will they let me off the boat?

Were aware of this situation prior to cruising--if so why did you not investigate what needed to be done prior to cruising. From your post, can't tell if it's a bank problem or lack of funds on your behalf. If the latter, it begs a different quest--why sail if you could not afford it.

I have had a credit card frozen on a cruise ship - and I did not have $ spent except my gratuities, not sure how or why they put a hold on it, but they did - I never give out my bank info.

I had to use a different credit card for future vacation time.

It was the "hold" that messed things up - they book$ you have not spent yet, and that clears when they get the amount you actually spend, but not for a few business days.

Can your friend not call your bank, give them your cc info and ask to have a deposit made to your account from it?

Sorry about your mess, but think you are in over your head and cannot afford the cruise or the stuff you charged.

If the account was compromised, it was probably cancelled

Wow, I did not know that and that is kinda crappy. I've never wanted to return something, but they should be able to accommodate it. Like if you found something in port for cheaper. At least I'll be very careful in the future and make sure I want to keep anything I buy.

Why in the world would someone do an on line payday loan instead of calling American Express and having them take care of. If the AmEx is in good standing, they could easily have taken care of it. If not onboard with GS, then with corporate. This was a mess but it was an easy fix.

I too don't understand why the bank would not be more helpful. I made a cash deposit to an ATM at my bank a year ago. For some reason, my receipt was short $300. I immediately contacted the bank and explained. They credited me instantly pending investigation. I knew it could be verified because they had a time code and also the machine would be over $300 when they balanced it. So why the OP's bank is not cooperating is puzzling.

I guess some people prefer to pay 300% interest...:what:

Maybe this is why the OP thinks credit is evil!!!! Ha :)

Credit is far from evil as the OP stated earlier!!!

To be fair, it was not the OP who said credit was evil. That was one of the other posters who was agreeing with the OP about "not doing credit cards."

I'm with you, though. Credit can be very handy and is not inherently evil. It can be a problem, if you don't use it wisely, but it can also be a tremendous benefit, if you do.

The shops onboard are run by starboard

Don't bring a debit card and bring more than ONE credit card !!

Our credit card was used fraudulently while we were on a cruise last year - thank heavens I had brought a spare card " just in case " !!

I would hate to think I would spend valuable cruise time stewing about how I was going to pay my onboard account !

There are so many oddities with this story, I don't really know where to start.

Hindsight is 20:20, but hopefully this story will continue to convince people that debit cards are the absolute WORST way to handle money. My bank tries to give me one and I refuse it. If I had bad credit, I'd use a secured credit card before I'd ever use a debit card. No way I'm giving anyone direct access to my checking account, ever.

You have a credit card, but you left it at home. I. Can't. Even......

Guest Services is playing hardball and you're falling for it. Go about your day and enjoy the remainder of your cruise. They will have to deal with the problem when you get back. And no. The Ft. Lauderdale Police aren't going to arrest you and throw you in jail.
