what I saw on evening chic night

Dear Celebrity,

May I offer some advice that I think would make everyone happy regarding the new Chic Night dress code. Although I prefer that formal night remain formal, the confusion and broad dress code that has been implemented could easily be solved by simply doing what the luxury lines are doing. Go Country Club Casual. Jacket, nice slacks for the men no tie necessary, and the ladies with nice cocktail dress or slacks. No jeans, no shirts tails hanging out, no tennis shoes, no ball caps etc etc etc. This would remove the confusion and tighten the dress code in the MDR so that all passenger would be comfortable and uniformly dressed

I've waded thru all 176 posts on this worthless discussion as Celebrity isn't going to change it's position based on this thread. Furthermore, I really don't care what others wear, as it has absolutely no bearing on my life.

That being said, I'm curious if anyone has any actual insight as to the dress code for people invited to dine with the captain. This used to be a feature on formal nights so what, if anything, is being done now that "formal night" clothing has been abandoned?

I'd object to that as it is not making everyone happy, least of all me. Celebrity has it spot on already. I did not wear a sport jacket on my recent cruise. Nor did half the people there. I was in a suite and never saw a Tuxedo in the suite restaurant. I've never had my dress sense questioned at any restaurant and I'd not be expecting it to start on a vacation that I had paid many thousands of dollars to join.

Here, here. Why didn't we make this move long ago?

Why was it horrible?

I have only been on one cruise that was horrible and that was really only the last day when everyone got sick from the motion of the ocean!

There might be a few unsatisfactory things that happen, but mostly they were all great!

Bib overalls are fine on the farm, NOT on a cruise ship.

Well if the gal was impressive, and someone from the ship crew rejected her Daisy Duke shorts and made her change, I'd consider it the patriotic and solemn duty of every American to find that crew member, admonish him, and complain about him on the comment cards at the end of the cruise. Do it for humanity, do it for your country, do it for all that is good and holy.

If we get rid of Daisy Duke shorts, then the terrorists win.

:)

Nothing like seeing some of those babes in Daisy Duke shorts in Wal-Mart. Ewwwww!

Nothing confusing concerning Celebrity's published suggested dress guidelines for the evening in the MDR.

After years of cajoling, timing and a good price finally got my husband to agree to the quickie cruise on the Connie that's leaving this Saturday. He's really not fond of dressing up, so finding out about the switch to Evening Chic was like a bonus, since we'd have otherwise been at Ocean Liners or the Buffet. I was hoping if he liked it I'd be able to get him to a Europe sailing next summer to celebrate our graduations from graduate/professional school as well as a much-belated proper honeymoon.

Looking at some of the back and forth over this issue has me wondering if even *I'm* going to have a good time. Maybe it's just the internet making a mountain out of a molehill, but now I feel like I'm going to be judged based on my clothes.

Formal is dead and buried, more like smart casual for the entire cruise will supersede Chic night

Azamara never had formal nights - it's always been "resort casual" every night. DH and I loved it.

We've done our share of formal nights, gowns, & heels, tuxes with his military medals.

Luggage is one of the issues for us if we do formal nights. One suitcase each - and I'd rather have room for my own pillow than a gown, heels, wrap, heels, jewelry... x 2.

Another issue for us: we no longer have a need to wear formal wear any place else. It's not inexpensive to purchase new duds.

DH says at this time in his life - after wearing uniforms, tuxes, suits.... he just wants to be comfortable.

HOWEVER - Because we are rule followers....if the cruise we are on has "formal nights" we will either dine in buffet, or a specialty restaurant (where it's always resort casual/evening chic/etc).

Now, we are just happy little campers who are blessed enough to be able to afford our cruising habit and no longer get wrapped up in what others are doing or not doing. As long as no one starts fights, gets hurt, downright rude, etc~ it's all good!

Of the 400,000 people cruising each week, only a passionate small percentage are here on CC. This issue is so way overblown it's funny. A lesson I learned a while back was that when I was under 25, I really didn't care what people thought of me. As I worked to climb the corporate and social ladders, I cared very much what people thought of me. Now that I've reached my senior years I realized people were never really thinking about me at all. Do what makes you happy and all will be well.

Yes, I know. Socrates and Plato are nothing compared to this writer where it comes to philosophy.

Nothing confusing as far as I'm concerned either. What the poster was suggesting was pretty much how most dressed when it was formal night. On my January cruise, passengers dress from formal wear to more casual wear and it looked like everyone was having a great time and no one's dinner was ruined because of what someone else was wearing.

The problem is that some pax do not follow Celebrity's dress guidelines and Celebrity does not enforce their own guidelines. So it becomes a "free for all" and anything goes! If Celebrity is not going to enforce their guidelines, why publish any guidelines at all?

The problem is not that I necessarily care what people think of me.

The problem is that there have been more than a few comments here describe those that take Celebrity's stated dress code at face value as "trash" and that the experience is "like being in Walmart." There have been a few references to that odious "People of Walmart" website. Or that Celebrity will end up just like Carnival.

I've had two perfectly nice cruises on Carnival. I preferred the more upscale experience I had on Celebrity years ago. My husband and I are both professionals in our 30s (so I think we're in Celebrity's target market), but maybe I'd do better with Carnival surrounded by people who just want to have a good time and don't cast down judgment on their fellow passengers.

Don't sweat it; people just talk a good game behind a keyboard and a pseudonym. You'll never have anyone say a thing to you on board and whatever you are thinking is dressed appropriately probably will fall exactly midpack of the crowd as well.

You will do just fine on Celebrity. I've seen those "people of Walmart" pictures and I've never seen anyone dressed like that on my first cruise after the change, so I can only assume that the folks that have said it have never cruised on a Celebrity ship. Those passengers who were more casual on evening chic looked very nice IMHO and it was nice to see folks more relaxed and comfortable than in years past.

I don't really care what others think, but I do care what I think and on my last 3 cruises before my one where the dress code changed, I felt overdressed. I wore true formal attire and the majority were not in formal attire. There were some cocktail dresses, a lot of everyday dresses, a lot of pants and tops, a lot of cotton maxi dresses, etc., so I was very happy with the change.

Those that really liked the formal dress should continue to dress that way if they like and those that like a less than formal dress, dress the way they like. How someone dresses is not going to ruin someone's dinner, if they concentration on what they are wearing and not what someone else is wearing.

Absolutely not. Like walking into most land restaurants. Only a few snobs on cc care what others wear.

Not my problem. Celebrity's issue and needs to grow some stones. Free for all...I'm not buying the posts that claim they've seen men in speed-o's in the evening in specialty restaurants or bib overalls in the MDR. We will continue to dress IAW with the published suggested guidelines (simple and not confusing) for the MDR in the evening or even step it up if we elect to. On our upcoming Cruise on the Eclipse we are taking formal wear for evening chic nights. Like always we'll stay dressed that way the entire evening. If my wife and I are the only two dressed formal those evenings so be it!

Here's what I'm expecting to see on Evening Chic night in August.

My family will be in gowns and taxes, others maybe similarly attired, maybe not. However all cruisers will be looking smart and elegant and, most importantly, having a great time and mingling with each other regardless of whether the people they're socialising with others are wearing smart jeans, suits, open neck shirts, ball gowns, sparkly sandals, shiny shoes, or whatever.

My heart felt sympathies to those who had to share the MASSIVE dining room with someone who's attire they did not approve of. Your pain, suffering in trying to choke down your meals will be remembered. I am sure you should apply for a refund for dealing with this:mad:
