SadieN Posted June 21, 2016 #2 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Dialysis at Sea does so on certain cruises throughout the year. The Cruising Disabled board has more info. Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app
Cruisesfun65 Posted June 21, 2016 #3 Share Posted June 21, 2016 Certainly not Carnival. You may try Royal Caribbean - Dialysis at Sea
JMAE Posted June 22, 2016 #4 Share Posted June 22, 2016 My Mom used Dialysis at Sea and she had a great time. I know they have used Celebrity and Royal Caribbean in the past. Cost is higher but it was worth it for my Mom.
cb at sea Posted June 22, 2016 #5 Share Posted June 22, 2016 You either have to bring your own supplies and equipment, or go thru "Dialysis at Sea"...no ship offers a dialysis center.
IsanTom Posted June 22, 2016 #6 Share Posted June 22, 2016 I imagine it's very expensive! If they charge $100 for a cough drop, dialysis must be in the $1000's for each procedure!
Rare Essiesmom Posted June 22, 2016 #7 Share Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) Actually, there is one ship that does...But she doesn't sail from the US and is probably the most expensive you could sail: Hapag-Lloyd Europa. riclop Posted June 22, 2016 #8 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Do they have a cruise line that offer a Dialysis machine? Unfortunately if you are on dialysis you should not cruise because a friend of mine went on a vacation and pre arranged to have his dialysis done and they made a mistake and he died. taecruise2 Posted June 22, 2016 #9 Share Posted June 22, 2016 You can find all the information on line under dialysis at sea. You will be able too see which ships and the dates that they will be sailing. They only take a small amount of patients, I think 16 is the max. The cost for the cruise is a little bit higher , but you have to pay in advance for your dialysis treatment. Last time my sister went it was $500.00 per treatment. They do not take any type insurance , it is possible that your ins company may reimburse you , but you must pay them in advance. When my sister sailed one of her regular nurses from her dialysis center happened to be working that cruise and she felt very comfortable with a nurse that she knew. ryano Posted June 22, 2016 #12 Share Posted June 22, 2016 (edited) While this is indeed a tragedy, how many people on dialysis sail and have a wonderful time? A bunch. Hogs on the High Seas take hemo - dialysis patients on a cruise every year at no charge to the patient or their companion. Its on Royal Caribbean and Dialysis at Sea handles the medical needs. Its a very successful event. i was looking into it for my roommate/cousin but he passed away. Edited June 22, 2016 by ryano
poz222 Posted June 22, 2016 #13 Share Posted June 22, 2016 Unfortunately if you are on dialysis you should not cruise because a friend of mine went on a vacation and pre arranged to have his dialysis done and they made a mistake and he died. Such blanket "you should not" statements are not productive. Under the same theory, you should not drive a rental car because a friend of mine rented a car, got into and accident and died... Flawed logic. Dialysis patients can cruise, but it takes a lot of planning. It also depends on the type of dialysis. Peritoneal (through the abdomen) dialysis offers more felxibility as you can do it yourself. Hemodialysis requires the special arrangements. For short cruises, with my mother, we would arrange dialysis near the port on the early morning before boarding, then on the afternoon when she returned. For longer cruises, the only option is the dialysis at sea program, which others have mentioned, is quite expensive. A patient at her dialysis center tried to arrange dialysis at a port (Pierto Rico) but the ship had to change itinerary and it turned into a big issue... So unfortunately, planning for longer cruises you have to use the special cruise services. Good luck and don't let dialysis trap you... With planning, you can still travel and enjoy life!
