Passport question

I remember seeing something about passport expirations but can't remember or find it. My son's passport will expire in May. We are taking a cruise in December. Will he be ok if something happens? Six months sticks in my head as a bar date?

It all depends upon where you are cruising because only some countries require passports to have more that 6 months remaining on them. If you are sailing in the Caribbean for example there is no such requirement so you may renew the passport at your convenience and as your personal travel plans dictate. (Carnival only recommends this, although some cruise lines do require it.)

Passport renewals/first time applications are being handled pretty quickly now. It took less than two weeks to get my sons' passports back, and they were all first time applicants. If you did it now, you should have it in plenty of time before your trip. However, since you are going to Canada, the only requirement is that it is valid at time of entry. Since your trip is in December, you should be fine using his current passport (and then renewing it when you get back home).

Okay, not sure why I thought you were going to Canada. Anyway, here is a link to look up requirements by country.

It's a good link but many of the requirements listed are for visitors arriving by air or land and staying for a period of time. Many countries have exceptions for cruise ship passengers as they are considered to be in transit.

If you are cruising in the Caribbean it is fine, there is no need to rush a renewal. If you are going to Europe you MIGHT have issues, but only if your embarkation country or disembarkation country require six months, and not all do. I would not even consider renewing until after the first of the year.

Many years ago we were sailing on Princess to the Caribbean. I did the immigration paperwork online for everyone in the family but when it came to me, it would not accept my passport. I was a few days shy of the 6 months left.

I called Princess and was told to bring my passport, birth certificate (original or certified copy) and my drivers license with me. I showed them all three at check in and i was set.

I have never let that happen again. I make sure that the passport still has 6 months left even if it is a closed loop from the US. Not worth the hassle for me if i have to fly home etc.

You may return to the US with your passport up until the day it expires, so returning home by air wouldn't be a problem.

You can fly home on the day your passport expires without any issue. Your problem was a Princess rule, not a US State Department rule.
