Hi Everyone!

We're getting ready to pack and wondering about elegant night. These days can men get away with jeans, dress shoes and an untucked button down? What's the usual? If anyone has pictures of elegant night pictures as of late and doesn't mind sharing, that would be great! What do you suggest for shirt, pants and footwear for men?

Thanks!!!

i wear slacks, Pull over shirt, Dinner Jacket and Cowboy Boots. i wear this also to the steakhouse.

If your not going to the MDR you can wear what ever your like. the Elegant night is for the MDR and all the picture taking around the ship. Most of the time i stay in jeans or nice shorts and a regular shirt as i dont always attend the MDR. i dont like my nice clothes to smell like smoke from the Casino where i spend most of my time.

My DH wears dark pants (docker type) & button down shirt, casual closed dark shoes. No jkt. or tie. I wear black slacks/nice top/nice black flats. Frankly nobody really cares. After 35 cruises I don't remember a single thing anybody else wore.

The only requirement by Carnival is long pants and a shirt with a collar. There has been a difference of opinion about jeans or no jeans. DH has worn black jeans and been just fine. Don't worry about what other people wear!! Some folks dress with suits and ties and others like us just want to look decent but not fancy!!

Women have an easier time of it with a nice dress or nice slacks and a glam top!

Yes, just follow the carnival policy and you will be fine. You are going to get all kinds of input on here from people telling you what you should wear. Don't pay any attention to them, just follow the policy. Too many people want to tell others what they should wear.

We tend to go all out! I wear my Dinner Dress uniform and my wife will wear a long dress or ball gown. On our cruise last week on Pride there were two other gentlemen in uniform, a Navy Chief in his Service Dress Blue's and an Army Sgt in his Class A's. Both looked sharp!

My husband wears khaki pants, an untucked polo shirt, and dress sandals (sometimes flip-flops if I don't catch him before he leaves the room :)).

You can dress up or down as you wish. We don't like to "dress up", so we change back into casual wear right after dinner.

I once saw a young lady in short-shorts with "Bride" written across the back on formal night. I also once saw a man in a sheer, button down shirt. They pretty much allow just about anything to be worn into the dining room. I have to say that my food tastes the same no matter what others are wearing.

We just got off the Valor yesterday. I can say we saw men and women both in shorts or whatever on formal night. It was crazy and disappointing. We were the nicest dressed upstairs in the Washington dining room at 6PM. Not sure what downstairs looked like or the 8PM seating.. I dont know why Carnival will not somehow enforce this.. People stumbling drunk and shouting through the dining room made for a really bad experience.

I read the dress code for elegant night, and said to my DW that I did not need to bringing a jacket. But she said I should, so I did.

Meanwhile while we were seated on elegant night, a woman passed us being escorted to her table by a staff member. All she had on above her waist was a lacy bra. I GUESS ANYTHING GOES!

This was on the Fascination in late August this past summer.

With the Valor doing 3 and 4 day cruises now I doubt they will enforce it. In fact when the Sensation was doing it Jeans were not forbidden and dress shorts were specifically stated as being allowed.

Pretty much sums up Carnival in a single statement.

It's what I would wear on Oceania so why not?;)

Actually on Elegant night I wear a suit, but I did see the gamut including items that aren't "allowed".

Jeans are not allows as you can see above. But there is a universe of difference between what you may be able to get away with and what the cruise says is the attire. Slacks, button down shirt (even a hawaiian complies) and something like a top sider, loafer or other slip on would comply with the dress code and still be acceptable - leaning toward the norm.

DH and my sons (12 and 18) will likely wear a polo, kakhi's and a sport coat over the holidays for our Magic cruise. I still wager they will be better dressed than average, for the very reasons others have cited.

Thank you ALL for the replies! I'm very excited to see the people who go all out dressing up for these nights. We're a bit middle of the road on this so it was nice to hear for DH he can get away with khakis, a button down and top sides or loafers. I find its much easier for us women to throw on a dress compared to men wondering what pants, shirt to sport coat or not etc. :) Again, thank you all so much!

As long as you're wearing something that's on the list of suggested attire, and not what is not permitted, you'll be fine. I stopped wearing a suit and tie several cruises ago. I discovered the food tastes just the same whether I'm dressed up or just wearing a pair of Dockers and a pullover knit shirt. We don't dress to impress. And on more than one occasion, we've skipped Elegant Night in the MDR and ate at the buffet. You'd be surprised at how many others do this. You're on vacation. There's no law that says you have to get dressed up and eat in the MDR if you don't want to.

DH wears nice slacks and a Guyabera shirt & I wear a nice dress. That's also formal here in Key West, except shorts are formal for men.:)

On a past cruise, one of our stops was Key West. I was informed that for a guy, getting dressed up meant putting on a shirt with a collar.
