Gratuities to be included in RCI fares

Ah but did you consider that the hallucination was actually you in the hospital bed saying to the doctor that you weren't hallucinating?

But I didn't get them and he promised I would.

Like when they put me on a drug and explained it was the most common date rape drug, did I get raped???? No, not even molested by the wonderful Mrs Gut, don't trust doctors that's my motto.

I must admit, I am getting a little nervous about being on a voyage with Mr Gut. Cunard security had better be good. And I am a bloke.

Then again, I was going to ask the specialist tomorrow if he could reduce some of my meds.

I welcome the change, We always prepay our gratuities and actually think if everyone did we'd have lower fares not higher. The estimated 30% who do pay the gratuities subsidise those who don't. Just my opinion.

I Feel that you are subsidizing the company by paying gratuities!

I am probably going to be abused here. I feel that the companies should pay their staff a proper wage.

The cruise companies overheads should include wages. They would not be able to run a business without these people. They are not something that should be marketed as an extra service. When I go on a holiday I want to relax and not worry about tipping. People say you are ripping off the service off by not paying tips when the first and biggest rip off are the cruise companies not paying the a proper wage and keeping more profits.

YOu are 100% correct in your comment that we are subsidising the wages of the crew. However that is the American way not the way of those of us downunder. Whereas Americans are used to a cost plus we are not. I still believe that even with Americans now having to pay compulsory gratuities on downunder ships many will pay extra. What this change means is that we will no longer be able to use "free Gratuities" as a perk which in fact will raise the cost per passenger by around $150 depending where one is going, length of cruise and exchange rates at time of booking. That said if gratuities are to automatically included one should be able to get one of the other three perks on offer as a matter of course under the go big go better. There is no longer a go best for us. I did a dummy booking of a 12 day GBR cruise in March a week or so ago and will repeat it again next week once the new regime is in place and I will be interested to see what the results are. I will publish the results here about the middle of the week

Spot on.

If you wouldn't mind, could you also check a cruise outside AU/NZ e.g. the med or Caribbean. I'd be interested to see what pricing changes happen.

Yes anyone would think that its a self imposed jail sentence they put on themselves.

Or get on that ship and work for peanuts NOW. Oh ok, under sufferance.

And ill still maintain that a lot of aussies tip extra on aus base cruises that have grats included and dont, no matter what those across the pacific, think or say.

I always pay the day charge plus I tip extra to those that provide excellent service.

Booking a cruise on the Royal Caribbean Australian website this morning for travel after 15 January 2017 includes gratuities.

Does not matter if it leaves from Brisbane, Sydney, Fort Lauderdale or Southampton.

Well that's a little different to what was in the 'release', where it specifically referred to "Australian & New Zealand sailings", not to bookings from Australians & New Zealanders. Website error?? Miscommunication??

Going to be interesting if all sailings, irrespective of where to or from, or nationality of customer, have T&G's included in fares. If we think that Trump's election has made an impact, wait until included T&G's hits the old US of A :)

I have just done a dummy booking for Europe next year via the NZ Celebrity website and gratuities are included in the base package automatically leaving me only a choice of 3 for the go big, go better, go best perk promotion. Whilst the decision meets our cultural differences down under it does remove an option that we had previously. In addition to any other increases compulsory payment of gratuities will add between $250 and $400 to the cost of a cruise

Thanks for testing that for us. Limiting the perks is fine, I do not care one way or the other. The one big thing is that it frees up some OBC to be used on other ship board spending.

I just purchased my RC cruise two days ago, it asked me if I wanted to incorporate gratuities into the fare. I chose yes, because if you choose no, they will still add the gratuities onto your daily tab and you'll simply have to pay it at the end. So, you CAN choose not to incorporate it into your upfront fare, but why would you? I booked a 14 day cruise and the gratuities was 400 something, I didn't think it horribly over the top or unjust. I'd rather it in the fare than pay as a bill at the end !

Because if you have any OBC it can be used to defray the cost of the gratuities if posted to your seapass account but not if you pre-pay.

Drinking your OBC is far more enjoyable.;)

But when you have a drink package there isn't much to spend OBC on that is of any interest to me. I have all the RCI Logo stuff that I could possibly need and I don't do specialty restaurants. I guess I could wait to buy the drink package until on board but I like to buy when I catch them on sale.

There is always the casino or an excursion or the spa or a photo package or a new watch, or a piece of art (print).:D

OK I decided to test this for myself. I did a dummy booking for our same cruise on Ovation in April 2018 & found that the price difference (not exact same room but same category room) has gone up by $758.36 which is more than the Cost of Gratuities that we have deferred to pay onboard. That is for 2 adults & a 12 yo.
