Casino and smoking

What a shame that the smoker's who are now in the minority by a huge amount are still catered to in the casino's. Come on RCCL, grow a pair and offer a smoking lounge outside for those few who must have a cigarette and cater to the non-smoker's for a change.

It is sad that they don't realize that it is their loss.

I always bring money for the casino but 95% of the time, I take it all home simply because I can not stand being in a smoke filled casino. It stinks, plugs up my nose, and gives me a headache. Not to mention that I stink after visiting.

Simply designating 1/2 of the room as non-smoking doesn't work. It could work if they set up air flow fans properly but that seems to be rocket science to them.

Left side of Casino Fresh air >>>---> non-smokers >>>---> smokers >>>---> exhaust at Right side of Casino.

The better the flow, the better it would work. Crank it up until it blows cards off the table! :D

Only a matter of time until there's no smoking indoors on cruise ships. RC may be sooner than most lines since Celebrity already has non smoking casinos.

I noticed on the Quantum that the Casino was being used as a smoking lounge when it was closed. Every morning I walked around the entire ship for about an hour or more and there was always a group in there smoking.

Can anyone tell me if there are any nights on Harmony where they make the casino non smoking? I thought I read somewhere they have this but don't remember for sure. Thanks!

On the Harmony, like on the Oasis and Allure, the casino is divided in two. One half is smoking, the other half is non-smoking.

Simple solution is to have a separate smoking casino......I am sure Royal can afford it....OR, just have a small bar/pub on the ship for smokers to go to and leave the rest of the ship smoke free....doesn't seem like rocket science to me?!

That being said, while many non-smokers may claim that Royal loses their money as they wont gamble in a smoking casino......most nights on my cruises it was hard to find a open machine to gamble on.....smoker or not they were almost all taken and busy.

Same is true on every cruise I have been on. The policy will probably not change as long as the casinos are packed.

I agree.

Royal actually did a test on either Majesty or Enchantment last fall where for a couple of cruises the casino was non smoking for the entire cruise. There were first hand reports from people on board saying the casino was almost empty and that in talking with casino employees that revenue was down significantly.

While it can be argued that since there was no advance notice or advertising it really wasn't truly indicative of long term results it is probably a good indication that Royal is not in a rush to fully test non smoking casinos.

Based on your statement, it says:

1. Majority of gamblers smoke

2 Only 15.1% of the passengers contribute to the majority the casino revenue.

3. The assumption is also that with the limited number of smokers on the ship, they all only go on a ship to gamble, while the non-smokers will complete other activities?

People use to say that restaurants would lose money once smoking was banned. However, they increased their revenue. One of the reasons cited was the higher turnover of tables, as the smokers rushed out. They still spent money, but they did not linger. In a Casino, with the only inside place to smoke, the smokers, who represent 15.1% of the adult population will linger and socialize in the Casino. This does not mean, they spend more money, it just means they will smoke more.

The average smoker, who has money to gamble, also most likely will work. So, they are very much accustomed to going a few hours without a puff. To put it this way, they can easily go into a casino, sit for 1 - 2 hours, until they run out of money, and go on deck to smoke and socialize. The difference is, they won't sit around as long in the casino, but they still have a limited amount of money.

The other assumption that is made is that smokers in general have more money to throw out gambling. Not really, since most smokers as the statistics show, have lower incomes. It's an interesting statistic, because it goes against the argument that the casino would loose money. So banning, or removing smokers, who have mostly, but not all, less disposable income, will allow others, based on the statistics, having more money to gamble, will than spend more time.

There is no argument that makes any sense, and hasn't already been proven wrong in recent history that indicates that any cruise ship will loose money in the casino. After the initial uproar, the smokers will come back reluctantly simply because the desire to gamble, is like the need to smoke. They both pull a person in, just now, they need to go to separate locations for each task.

When you enter a RCCL casino, the strong smoke odor is pervasive. The numbers of people smoking but not gambling is significant to the point that they at times block access to slot areas especially at night. We have seen many times when the casino was crowded with smokers but few were gambling. On several ships we have been on people were smoking in the non smoking area, the casino manager was told and despite a promise to stop it, nothing was done. We like others we know have voted with our pocket books and avoid the casinos. By the way, we have known some managers for a long time and on occasion have had dinner with two. Both lamented that Casino revenue is DOWN since the casino became a primary indoor smoking area.

The formal nights on Serende in Dec were non-smoking in the casino.

Great to hear! I'm a card player who spends a lot of time in the casino and will be on Serenade in March. As an ex-smoker, the smell really bothers me but unless there's someone at my table smoking, I'm ok. I asked a smoker on Brilliance last month if she would refrain from smoking while she played at the table where I was playing because it really bothered me and she said "I like to smoke" and proceeded to chain smoke and blow it right at me while I held my nose. Most smokers will honor your request if you ask them to stop.
