Proposal to Strengthen Cruise Passenger Safety Laws

Eventually, I hope that will be the case. I don't think sellers should be able to evade consumer protections without completely disavowing themselves of the good offices of the United States government ENTIRELY.

The Hammers, 74 and 72, died of smoke inhalation on a cruise on the Amazon. The cause of said smoke was from a PROHIBITED power strip. I guess the family would like to sue for pain and suffering. Sounds like ambulance chasing to me.

 

This cruise was not on a US based ship, or ported in the US. But was sold out of Alabama. I guess the tentacles of ambulance chasers want to extend their reach.

Actually, it is only the plaintiff's contention that the fire was caused by the power strip. Interestingly, the power strip was supplied by the cruise line, and the plaintiff's are claiming that because the power strip was not surge protected that that was the cause of the fire. They are a little confused about the details of maritime electricity.

They are. The power strip found in the cabin was not surge protected, and the couple's daughters claim that since the strip wasn't surge protected, that this was the cause of the problem. As you say, surge protection is the problem, not a lack of surge protection.

Everything proposed increases costs for the cruise lines and those costs get passed on to use (or something else I enjoy gets cut).

 

"Small towns" are cited, but no statistics on how crime rates in small towns compare to cruise lines - I think we know why.

 

If these guys are really interested in reducing crime and violence on US citizens, they could introduce legislation requiring small towns to follow the model that cruise lines currently follow:

 

1) You have to pay and present a passport or photo ID to enter and leave. All of your belongings are x-rayed no drugs or alcohol or weapons allowed in to the small town.

2) Have public areas in small towns step up surveillance and video retention to levels already in place in cruise ships.

3) Hold the governments of small towns accountable and subject to liability for damages as a result of crimes or poor maintenance or other negligence

4) Have all government workers and agencies in these small towns subject to weekly feedback surveys from their citizens- any score less than a 10 should result in job security issues for those workers.

 

Part of the reason we cruise is to get away from the ridiculousness of the US Government. Please stay away.

First off, sprinklers are a fire suppression system, not a fire extinguishing system, meaning that a sprinkler by itself will not normally extinguish a fire, it only suppresses the fire until other means are brought. No guarantee of safety of life with a sprinkler.

 

I believe that this vessel was so small that it did not require sprinklers in the cabins, only smoke alarms.

 

I do see that the Peruvian Navy's report states that the power strip was the source of the fire, but the plaintiff's claim that the power strip should have been surge protected is rubbish, as it was drawing too much current, not a high voltage.

Ah, the age old argument for some regulation - "isn't the increased cost worth it if it saved just one life"?

According to Wikipedia, an American life is quite a bit more expensive than others -about $10 million. Aussies and Kiwi are about $4M. Based on polls, Russians are worth less than $100K - the land of no regulations.

We have been on 78 cruises with 5 cruise lines & generally we feel safe ; however ,we have experienced bad medical services & bad cruise line responses to a potential criminal situation .

 

We have also been on ships were there were suicides unfortunately & held in port by the FBI until they are satisfied .

 

In general we endeavor to avoid potentially harmful situations ;but ,some times they do come your way . I a& my wife are 78 years of age .We cruise for relaxation & personal enjoyment of visiting various ports ,

 

We also have experienced highly untrained crew personnel when it comes to emergencies .

 

My questions have been how liable is the cruise line for their neglect in those areas above & other things that can harm passengers .

 

There has got to be laws enforceable to protect every cruise line passenger from negligence & crew members that commit criminal acts against cruise passengers .

Some seem to think the so called little guy should pay nothing and the Corporations and people who have earned a good wage should sacrifice for those little people (not my words).

Yes, people use electricity everyday, but rarely understand how it works.

 

In other words they had a hair dryer, 3 computers, a small A/C unit and 4 IPhones plugged into it.... They were not hit by lightning. That said, you would think that a breaker would have tripped. O I forgot they put the curling iron on the daily compass, which was beside a bottle of 151 proof rum....
