Warning to gamblers sailing rccl/baltimore/grandeur !

Recommended Posts

Casino is closed when docked in Bermuda.

I thought Royal opted not to pay the licensing fee to open the casino while docked.

Trust me, Linda knows what she is talking about. :) If Linda (Life is Good Cruising) says that the casino is open, the casino is OPEN. :D :D :D

Wow, and thanks? It is amazing which way a thread goes from the start. I was simply informing gamblers that since the last time I was on Grandeur at Christmas, the policy had changed and it limited your time to build points. I did not ask or even care why but was given many answers as to why of which only one could be right so what does that say about all you busy bodies who probably don't even gamble but just have to put your 2 cents in. That was wrong anyway. I do think some of the conversation was informative but the boatload of crap offered up... Who know what to believe? Believe this, if you're a gambler, don't take a short cruise out of Baltimore. Good day.I said good day

I fixed your post. And if you want to post on an internet message board, you need to expect others to post their views. Otherwise, don't post.

The fact is that Maryland law has changed. It is lovely and delightful that you wanted to inform others of that fact, since they may not have known. But your viewpoint, as being deprived of hours of gambling, is not shared by many on here, as shown in the posts that are here.

But good luck in your future gambling adventures!

And calling the ship a rust bucket and sewer of the seas does not help.

I am clear-eyed and fully cognizant of the Grandeur's shortcomings, but love her for every wonderful day I have spent on her.

And I do not, and never will, call her (barf!) Lady G. Or any of the other ships. (double barf)

I can drive to Baltimore and love the easy access. I am no longer jealous of Floridians who have this privilege. Grandeur is a lovely ship and I have loved every minute I have spent on her.

I'll be on again in March, and am happy to contemplate that fact.

:)

As a hard core gambler on Royal Caribbean, it was a nice change of pace on my Grandeur cruise 3 weeks ago that the casino was closed on day one and close early on day five. I actually spent more time with my daughter. I also hit a couple of great hands so I came out just about even.

Only downside was that less gambling time (and a short cruise) meant my Casino Royale offer was less than normal....no free cruise.

There is alot of fine print on the certificates issued by RCl...such as if a husband and wife both receive individual certificates for future cruises they can not combine their certificates or redeem on the same sailing. Never had this problem with NCL..

Yup..NCL in my opinion has a much better players program.

The certificates we receive from the casino definitely can be combined We have done this many times.

Slight correction, that's 12 NAUTICAL miles.

It's lovely to want to inform Cruise Critics in general, but I can assure you that Aquahound knows that. ;) :D

Territorial waters or a territorial sea, as defined by the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, is a belt of coastal waters extending at most 12 nautical miles (22.2 km; 13.8 mi) from the baseline (usually the mean low-water mark) of a coastal state.

Rather then speculate I wrote to the Maryland Gaming Commission. Here is the reply I received:

Thank you for contacting us with your question. Under state law, gambling on cruise ships is not regulated by Maryland Lottery and Gaming. The agency that has jurisdiction over gambling on cruise ships in the Chesapeake Bay is the Maryland Port Administration.

According to Transportation Article, § 6-209©(2), a permit for gaming on a passenger cruise ship issued by the Port Administration on state waters authorizes gambling only while the vessel is underway, is east of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, and is operating under an itinerary that either originates or terminates in a foreign port outside of the continental United States.

We appreciate your interest in this topic. Please let us know if you have any additional questions about lottery and casino gaming in the state, or contact the Port Administration if you have further questions about gambling on cruise ships.

Perhaps Carnival applied for the permit, but Royal Caribbean didn't.

I appreciate the information! I haven't sailed out of Baltimore for a few years, and am disappointed that the casino will not operate the first night, and have to close early the last night. I always find the Royal Caribbean casinos very enjoyable, and given such a small ship, a nice diversion.

Unfortunately, my 2 cents is that ports (states, counties, port authorities) that make these rules only discourage cruise lines from sailing from them - as the cruise line will receive the negative comments, and think about future cruises originating elsewhere..... we all know that the money will drive the decisions... quite plain and simple.

Oh well....

Virginia has casinos.

I do not believe there are any casinos actually in the state of Virginia. West Virginia and Maryland but not Virginia. I know I go to Charlestown WV as that is the closest one to me. I live in Virginia.

Carnival pride opens thier casino as soon as they clear the key bridge. Royal caribbean does not want to pay the taxes. On the carnival pride you do pay sales tax on anything brought in the bay including drinks.

You also do that on the Grandeur. Anything you want to buy, I'd wait till day 2. Not sure if that includes excursions or not. They do charge tax in the specialty restaurants the first night. Not sure about taxing the internet and drink packages, but I know I paid tax on the Explorer the first day of the cruise on the soda package before the ship set sail, years ago out of Jersey.

I'd ask at Guest Services first if you want to buy the first day.

Not true! The new law took affect on January 1, 2017 and applies to all cruise lines. I was on Grandeur in 2016 and the casino opened 30 minutes after we left port.

It started in November 2016. I was on the cruise after it started.

One thing I don't quite understand here. If it's a Maryland law, do they really wait until they exit the bay before opening the casino. When I checked on my GPS I was surprised at how the state line followed the course of the Potomac and headed southeast from point lookout, extending a few miles south of Point Lookout before entering Virginia, but there still seems to be about 70 miles of Virginia waters before leaving the bay. It seems lie it would be a very late opening leaving Baltimore, but 5PM on the way back seems a bit early. Am I missing something here?

Virginia too...

According to the quote you posted, neither Carnival nor RCI should be able to have a permit as mentioned, since their itineraries do not "either originates or terminates in a foreign port."

Wow again, i'm really impressed and humbled at some of the responses. I do love this old rust bucket, sewer of the seas [she really is stinky in places and because shes so old and being sold they won't fix her] the staff is great though. I will be on her again aug 19th. See you at the $10 blackjack table at noon the second day because we all now know shes closed the first night!!! What the heck... Its a free cruise anyway!

I apologize. I read Google too quickly. You are right. Virginia has legalized betting on horse races but no casinos. :)
