My take on Star Class

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So I am on Harmony as I type, up early and just felt the bow thrusters and other machinations as we just docked back at Port Everglades. Wanted to give a data point, which is only my opinion as to whether Star class is "worth it". For me, I would not travel on a ship that offers it if i didn't have it--I enjoyed the perks very much.

Here is my breakdown of why i liked it and would pay for a cabin that offers it.

Best perks for me:

One email to our Genie two weeks before the cruise and every request for specific time/date for specialty restaurants was taken care of--no compromising/no changes needed--we were fortunate enough to eat where we wanted when we wanted for "free". I cant recall the specialty dining fee, but if it is $39 x the 4 of us x 4 restaurants---for me well worth the ~$720 in "savings" for "free" specialty dining. (I quote "free" as obviously we paid more for the room that provided Star class service).

"Free" beverage package--again we saved probably $100 bucks a day on alcohol and soda between the 4 of us. The other unexpected perk is you don't even see a bill, once they see your star class key, the drinks keep coming.

Free Starbucks--even though there is a sign inside the Starbucks that makes it clear that their drinks are not included in any drink package--rest assured there is no charge for star class customers. We averaged about 6 a day for the 4 of us in total, so about $200 benefit over the week.

Free internet - all 4 of us utilized every day, but have no idea what that would have cost if we had to pay-I'm assuming at least $10 per day per person so again another $300 or so in "savings".

Other nice touches:

Free minibar--they literally brought us a case of coke, diet coke, sprite, and OJ and left it on our counter--we just kept refilling the fridge as we took cold ones out.

Free laundry everyday

Always had a seat reserved for whichever show we wanted to see

Even though we had a genie--other concierges in the suite lounge knew us by name within an hour of arrival.

1st choice of Labadee cabana was available

Escort on and off the ship (not such a big deal getting on, but i am anticipating the ability to skip lines on the way off in a couple of hours)

Huge fruit and cheese plates delivered every day

Nice parting gifts-t shirts , model of the boat, reusable water bottles

Genie touched base every morning to see if we needed anything else for that day

Not just for Star class-but we really enjoyed the suite sun deck---never crowded and the beds and "cabanas" were a nice switch from just lounge chairs.

Thought service and food in Coastal Kitchen was excellent (never ate in main dining room so can't compare) but we did like the intimate feel of CK.

Wow bands were in the room and ready to use when we arrived.

That's about it for my initial fresh "still on the boat" thoughts. I'm sure I've forgotten some things and please let me know if you have any questions and I'll try to respond when home later today.

Thanks

Was there a charge in Labadee for the cabana? Did they have a special lunch at Nellie's beach for the suites guests? (I think the cabana's are on Nellie's beach...I know someone will correct me if I am wrong!

You pay full cabana costs and they are located at Barefoot Beach. You also get the BF Beach lunch buffet. Your drinks at BF are also included as a Star Class Guest.

Totally agree and can't wait for Sept. 16 on Harmony. Our second Star Class experience on the Harmony.

What suite were you in and who was your Genie ? We had Reyno in Feb but I think he is on vacation now. Hope he comes back to Harmony but don't know if he will or not.

I lose my Star class virginity in a month on the Harmony... Which suite are you in?

So to add a few more thoughts/answers...

-we were in sky loft 1724 (which we prefer to the other sky loft as we love the aft facing balcony to watch all the action on the golf course and flow riders).

-We had Joyce as our genie..(I believe she had the royal loft suite and the two sky lofts our week)

-Also had no idea what to tip her..ended up giving her $300. Still have no idea if that is insulting or outrageously over tipping:).

-I had inquired about sky loft not being star class starting in 2018 and was told that for Harmony they will be renaming the sky loft suites and those physical rooms will remain star class. Please take this with a grain of salt-I got the impression from the few people I asked that would be in the know..that it is still a little confusing even to them.

-Lastly, we were picked up at our room by our Genie promptly at 8:00am and were in a cab, having been escorted off the ship, retrieved our luggage and cleared CBP, by 8:14. Maybe the best benefit of all!

Thank you for taking the time to post this information. Three of us are headed to the Harmony in Sept. and are currently in a Crown Loft Suite. I understand "worth it" is highly subjective, but we could upgrade to a Sky Loft for about $6,000 total and I am considering it. I have thus far had what are now Sky Class Perks on Freedom, Oasis and Allure, and really enjoyed them, but am wondering if the experience is that much better with the Star perks. I see that Star Class seats are reserved, but are those specific seats for Star Class guests, and are other rows reserved for Sky Class? Any other helpful info is appreciated.

The Sky Loft Suites on Oasis class are being renamed Star Loft Suites and will remain Star class

This was a post I made after getting upgraded to a Star Class experience last week. Ours was an upsell. As you said you have to decide what is worth it. Ours was much less than $6,000.

"OK, now for my final musings. We are back at home where our Star Class sea pass means nothing (believe me, I tried). No one is delivering me any drinks, and it appears that I am expected to cook for my family. I have called a few times for the genie, but surprisingly, Philip hasn't answered. ;-). I miss the Suite Life.

Our last night on the ship, our dinner was at Chef's Table. Philip had originally booked it for my husband and I and our two daughters (11 and 15) but after the girls realized how long dinner would take, they decided to back out. The Genie ordered room service in for them, and, in hindsight this was a great decision as they would not have enjoyed the meal and would have been bored and fidgeting.

Chef's Table was simply amazing. Best meal of the week by far. We were told to meet on deck 11 outside of the library at 8:20 PM. We were met there and escorted into the 2nd floor of the Diamond Lounge, where Chef's Table is located on the Allure. The table was set beautifully, for a party of about 15 or 16 people. This time there were only five of us for dinner so it was very intimate. One of the five was a crewmember, a dealer in the casino, so that made for some very interesting conversation. The wine pairings and the food were simply incredible, and it was very interesting to hear why the wines were chosen to pair specifically with the food, and then hear the chef talk about how each dish was prepared. I believe there were six courses in all so by the end of it you are very full and pretty tipsy from the many glasses of wine, and the desert martini. In hindsight, I wish that the seating had been earlier, as that was a lot of food and drink so late in the evening. We did not finish until a little before 11PM. I can't imagine how long it would've taken if all 16 people had shown up.

Overall, I cannot say enough good things about cruising star class. Again if we had not gotten the upgrade for such a reasonable price, we would not have been able to sail that way. We were very excited about just cruising in a grand suite, but the differences between that and what Star Class includes is no comparison. The access and the service you received as Star Class are unparalleled. You really do feel like a member of the rich and famous club. The room was awesome, with so much space that it never felt for a second that you were even on a ship. And, being on deck 17, right next to the suite lounge and CK was so convenient. We utilized them frequently because they were so close. Now, I did have one and only one complaint on the cruise which was about noise in the room. For some reason every morning about 4:30 AM music would start up. The room does share a wall with the coastal kitchen, so I was convinced that the music was coming from there. Our genie had security and the sound engineer take a look around and they didn't think it was coming from the coastal kitchen as no crew is in there that early. The next morning the same thing happened, as it did for a third morning. I finally went down to 16 to see for myself, thinking it was the Windjammer and I did hear music coming from there. So, I didn't do a lot of sleeping in on this cruise (but got in more more morning workouts than I planned on so not a total loss). My husband and daughter both heard the music in the mornings as well, but they were able to go back to sleep after. But, as we were leaving the ship, our genie Philip came with an envelope they gave us 15% off of the cost of this cruise to use towards a future cruise. This was great surprise, as I hadn't expected anything or even thought or imagined we would receive anything.

Back to the benefits of Star Class. As I stated before, absolutely everything is included. Literally the only things we paid for were our cabana, some candy that my daughter wanted at the candy store on board, and a bottle of sake that my husband drink at Izumi (got at 40% off).

The ability to eat at any of the specialty restaurants whenever we wanted was awesome, or the ability to order from them via room service. The fully stocked mini bar, and a cooler full of beer that was re-stocked fully every day. Also, the free laundry and pressing services. If we got in our dirty clothes by 10:30 AM in the morning, they were returned to us by 5:00 PM that day. Now, I wouldn't give them anything really expensive to wash, but for swimsuits, undergarments, t-shirts, etc, it is nice to come home with clean clothes.

More perks: Never having to wait in line, the best seats in the house saved for you at every show, having every request met was a great experience we very fortunate to have. Also, getting on and off the ship was so easy and seamless. When we were disembarking, we left our room at 8:45 AM, and were sitting in the airport lounge by 9:15. We didn't pause for anything, went from our room to Uber to airport without a hitch.

We DEFINITELY won't cruise like that every time (though I applaud the people who can - please feel free to adopt my family - or just me!), but I am hoping that we can do it a few more times. I will say with certainty that we will probably not cruise in anything below a grand suite, because the suite perks are great even at that level, especially on oasis class ships.

Again, very happy and willing to answer any questions people have. I am certainly not as much of an expert as some on this board as we don't cruise nearly as often, but I can give you my experiences and opinions from what I saw.

Last time I will say it...Aaah, the Suite Life!"

We also enjoy Chefs table. The menu was changed recently and still great and lots of fun. I encourage everyone to try it. We never book ahead but see if we can get BOGO when we board. Works about 75% of the time.

I totally forgot about that. We are in the same Harmony cabin March 2018, Allure Sept 2018 and Symphony March 2019. Not a bad looking cruise schedule.

If Star class includes tips why do feel its necessary to tip the Genie?

Sent from my iPad using Forums

It's not necessary, it's an appreciation of the "above and beyond" service you received. If you don't think the Genie went the extra mile, then you are not required to tip.
