Why did Breakaway arrive in NYC early today (Aug 13)?

Getting ahead of a storm expected to move north.

It has absolutely nothing to do with the tropical depression, which was located east of the Bahamas this morning, at least 1,000 miles from NY. The posted chart shows the possible track over the next 5 days...the current location of the storm is indicated by that little dot at the bottom of the chart.

The storm eventually could be an issue for BA's voyage to Bermuda and Dawn's voyage back to Boston from Bermuda, but it's of no relevance to BA this morning. Biker@sea's explanation about the tides is probably right.

My bet is that they got a more favorable ride from the Gulf Stream, and with BA's 4 engine design, they couldn't slow down enough to get one engine off line and still make arrival, so they just kept the engines at maximum efficiency, docked early and shut down the engines hours early, saving fuel over just slowing down. Compared to the more typical 6 engine design, BA's 4 engines don't allow the same flexibility.

Ah,,,, no.

TD 8 is still well south west of Bermuda. It would not have affected Friday's return

May affect the Dawn's return this week. But not last week

Strong tailwind ?? - Gem also arrived back & docked early yesterday @ 6 AM ... different routing. I'm sure that there' happy campers making their airline, train, bus & limo/car service connection ...

Sometimes, it could be due to an onboard medical emergency & need for shore transfer (when medevac by helo isn't necessary w. patient stablized)

There is a NYC Street Fair nearby but traffic wasn't expected to be disrupted. Potus is back in town for a few days with possible frozen zones, closure & detours if & when the VIP motorcades are on the move (around the Tower, Fifth & Madison Avenue and 57th Street) Getting the ship ready with provisioning early is always good as those trailers often had to wait & idle to run their refrigeration on side streets nearby.

BA was in sight off the Far Rockaways before 3 AM this morning, I thought hmmm - looked at her live webcam feed and like OP, marinetraffic App. Docked at Pier 88 just past 4 AM local time (tracking site used GMT clock)

She was at 18 knots further out, slow down to 14 knots approaching the Ambrose channel by the Lower Bay & continue under the VZB - passed the SOL maintaining 15 knots & continue up the Hudson ... Harbor traffic was most likely very light at those pre-dawn hours but what was the hurry ?? It's not like she will be in touch in low tide.

One other time - as I recall the posts here - either the Gem or BA came back so early, there was an onboard medical & patient was transferred via harbor PD or FD launch ashore. Perhaps, someone coming off the BA this morning can help solve the mystery ... if they only knew.

Think for a moment - they would be shutting down the casino at 2:30 AM or so & the party crowd for the final night could still be dancing away.
