Money on board

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have a question, with the Voyager cruise, can we use a preloaded currency card? I was advised that these aren't accepted as it doesn't have our names on them?

We have one from our time in America.

If not, can we bring US dollars on board and load our sea pass that way?

Many thanks for helping this newbie out!

The ship will not register a preloaded currency card as a form of payment for your on board spending in the way they will accept a credit or debit card because, as you say, your name is not on the card and they have no way of knowing if you have a million dollars or one dollar on the card. The easiest way is to register a credit / debit card ( if you have one:D ) when you check in but then withdraw your US$ on your currency card via the ATM on board ( which dispenses $US) and pay your account with that cash. ( no card charges involved) There is no real need to " preload" your seapass with cash as the ship gives you an " advance" of three or four hundred dollars and will not ask for any money until you exceed the "advance" amount. You will, of course, have to pay for whatever you spend during the course of the cruise but not neccessarily "pre" pay.

I will be cruising on the Carnival Spirit and plan to load my sail and sign card with cash when boarding. Can someone please let me know if I can load it with USD as I have some left from my previous holiday. Thanks

Carnival Spirit onboard spending is in AUD.

You can load it with USD, but they will convert it, and it would be at the standard conversion rates just as you would pay anywhere else.

Better to keep them for another trip to the US, or any other place where USD is the main currency.

Thanks for the help above - the TA assisting us is a little useless. She told me we could use AUD on board as well as the ports, luckily I’ve read the RCCL website as well as these forums and know otherwise.

I have another question and hope it’s alright to add it here instead of posting another thread. Do we find out about the formal night or any theme nights in advance?

Thank you once again for helping this first timer out!

We've registered a credit card at the start of a cruise but settled our account with a prepaid currency card or cash the last night of the cruise. No problem.

Yep.

Same as I do if I want to use a payment method other than a Credit Card.

No. Though there is info on how many formal nights will be per length of cruise - and generally it's first sea day and 2nd last evening.

Theme nights vary depending on itinerary, passenger demo and CD, but there are fairly common ones like disco/70s, and white night.

As mentioned it is easily done to pay your account with other methods besides the Credit card on the account. I have even used Casino winnings although that is a rarity.

The number of formal nights is set based on number of nights of your cruise - it will be in your docs.

Here is a reply to my recent query about theme nights for upcoming Voyager [8N] from RC:

"Thank you for contacting the Cruise Administration Department.

Please be advised, theme nights are offered onboard cruises of 4 nights or longer. Because these events vary by ship and itinerary, dates and times

will not be available until you board the ship and this can be found in the Cruise Compass.

Common themes on cruises are Black and White night, 50s/60s/70s/80s and Country Western.

This is subject to change.

Unfortunately we are not able to provide a proper response to specific theme nights that will occur on this cruise.

We appreciate your understanding.

Should you have further queries, do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind regards,

Cruise Administration"

Thanks, that’s helpful! I guess we will pack one set of nice clothes (we can always wear them again) and some funky clothes (we have matching Hawaiian shirts) in case of a theme night [emoji847]

That is probably the best preparation you can have without the exact details.

Yes, we normally pack a "Hawaiian' shirt + a couple of cheap lei's - don't take up much room and works for Island/Caribbean/Hawaiian nights, and who cares, I'll wear it any night if they don't have one - "I'm on holiday" :D

Went to Comedy Club on Carnival Spirit on Caribbean party night. The hostess was paying out on everyone wearing "Hawaiian" shirts - "you know Hawaii's not a Caribbean Island!!!" Derrrr, she must have thought she was Eddie Maguire ;)
