tip Posted October 6, 2017 #51 Share Posted October 6, 2017 ... formal dress on cruises is going the way of the dinosaur. After twenty years of cruising, I believe that you are correct. And this is what drives the pro-formal folks batty. Yes, many still dress up. I gave up on the suit years ago and wore a dress shirt, tie, dress slacks, and sport coat with shined shoes. On my cruise later this month, I shall not bring along the sports coat nor tie and will just wear a dress shirt, dress slacks, and shined shoes. I am sure that it will offend some folks on these threads, but I have never heard anyone make comments while on the ships since they do not have the anonymity of posting on these boards. Credit 00 Posted October 6, 2017 #52 Share Posted October 6, 2017 We stay "Dressed up" all night, for me it's only ever a dark suit so it's no big deal. We will visit a bar or two and maybe see a show, I never wear shorts anyway. That sounds wrong but you know what I mean.
floridalover5623 Posted October 6, 2017 #53 Share Posted October 6, 2017 You may be right about some guys changing. But that is a real bad guess. At 80 % sorry. My guess is 10% if that. Tony I will take a photo next Nov. :)
pacruise804 Posted October 6, 2017 #54 Share Posted October 6, 2017 King, how long have you and the queen been married? Do you want to stay married? I think it it perfectly fine to change after dinner. HOWEVER, if my wife made a point of making this request, I would not consider changing, for even one millisecond, before she indicated that she was ready to change. I can't discount the possibility that she may want to feel elegant after dinner in the theater or in one of the lounges or in the casino or on a dance floor or, even, on our balcony for a few more hours. My guess is that if she's in her fancies being seen with me, she would like for me to be in my fancies, also. Of course that is easy for me to say. Being the manly man that I am, I find nothing at all uncomfortable about wearing a suit or a tuxedo. I do draw the line, though, when it comes to a kilt. It's sweet that you are putting your spouse first - how it should be<3. My husband has a great kilt (and looks very manly in it ) but we won't take it since 9 yards of fabric is heavy and a pain to deal with pleating for just a few hours. We will probably stay in our semi-formal wear, but since I am often cold while DH is warm I will likely take his sports coat;). If he wants to return to the room and change though I support that too. Turk1 Posted October 6, 2017 #55 Share Posted October 6, 2017 My wife and I enjoy dressing up for Formal Night. While I don't wear a Tux (Dark Suit) if my wife ask me to I would. And I agree it is like a date night and my wife enjoys it. So, after 47 years of marriage I like to try and make her happy. Cruises are a special time for the 2 of us to enjoy time with each other. Now, that being said, if someone wants to change after dinner I see no issues with it. After all it is a personal choice we make.
geocruiser Posted October 6, 2017 #56 Share Posted October 6, 2017 My DH wears a tux on formal nights. Sometimes after dinner he will change out of the tux into a pair of dress pants and dress shirt with no tie for the rest of the night.
USCcruisecrazy Posted October 6, 2017 #57 Share Posted October 6, 2017 The bottom line is that everyone should do what is right for them...if you like to dress up and stayed dressed up then do it. Personally, my tux or suit are always very comfortable so I see no reason to change based on comfort. Who hasn't gone to a wedding, ate drank and danced the night away...all the while being in a tux or nice suit? I'm glad everyone has their own preference...just enjoy the cruise and "wash your hands" LOL!!! Had to throw that in after reading the washing your hands thread. Lucky TGO Posted October 6, 2017 #59 Share Posted October 6, 2017 HELLO !ME. The last time I wore a jacket to a wedding it came off & was thrown in the car for the reception. :D I new a guy that did the same thing. He would put his jacket around the spare tire in the trunk of his car to keep the tire clean. He then would take the jacket out of the trunk and put it on when he went to the next wedding. Floridalover 5623 Is your name Mike? :):) Tony

Steelers36 Posted October 6, 2017 #62 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Who cares about percentages? It's clear that some folks stay dressed and some don't. For me, it depends on if I have much time between dinner and an entertainment start time. Also, as we always see on these threads, there is a range and variety of attire employed in the evening and it all works. All good to me.

Nebr.cruiser Posted October 6, 2017 #65 Share Posted October 6, 2017 We usually eat rather late, and leave our dressier clothes on if going to the late show. Sometimes we dress up and then go to the show before our late dinner. We change clothes only if going to the late showing of MUTS.
Lucky TGO Posted October 7, 2017 #66 Share Posted October 7, 2017 Many people do. :p Your right. But that can’t keep me from feeling Sad for all of them <|3 That they have to wear clothes they keep in the trunk of the car. Sorry Tony

Steelers36 Posted October 7, 2017 #70 Share Posted October 7, 2017 Nope. Do you change after diner at home before a show. Er, no. It would be a long way back home from the restaurant. And not dressed formally to go out in the first place.
welshy74 Posted October 7, 2017 #71 Share Posted October 7, 2017 If it's black tie then I leave it on as it's a novelty, and I kinda think I look good in a tux [emoji6]however if it's just a suit then I change after dinner. Wearing a suit just feels like I'm at work and I really don't want to be reminded of work whilst cruising. We are booked on a Hong Kong to Singapore RCL cruise in a few weeks and as this is a big trip (cruise is just the middle bit) we are not taking formal attire at all. So formal night will be open collar shirt and trousers. Sent from my iPad using Forums
iancal Posted October 7, 2017 #72 Share Posted October 7, 2017 We used to. Not any more. We skip formal nights in the MDR. Now retired, we only travel with carry on. This means that we pack things that we wear all the time, not once or twice. We don't miss formal nights at all. They are no longer a special event on a cruise for us. Now that the dress codes are changing we may go back. The real issue for us is that the food and the service are not really that great. Just like any other night on board so no big deal for us. It a shame you don't go to the DR on formal nights. It's the only time they serve a decent piece of steak without charging extra.
iancal Posted October 7, 2017 #74 Share Posted October 7, 2017 We live in cattle country. We very seldom order a steak on a cruise or when travelling for that matter. And we have had enough of tough, overcooked lobster so we never order it on a cruise ship either.
Wisdum Posted October 7, 2017 #75 Share Posted October 7, 2017 We always change after dinner. I wear a dressy top and pants to dinner and that’s even too much for me.. my days of dressing to the nines are looong gone. Hubby wears shirt, tie, and a $3 blazer he got at a thrift store (still had the tags on it).
