Can I request no room cleaning?

We chat with the room steward every day so it is never a question of not seeing us. IF we need to empty the trash can we bring it out into the hall to the steward when we ask for more towels. It is never a problem and our cabin is NEVER hard to clean when we leave the ship.

We DO allow them in once on each cruise. We also leave the tips and even give them extra as it is not their fault that we don't need much attention.

We do the same in most hotels on land.

Good question. It would be interesting to know what your outcome was after your cruise. Every cruise is different in respect to policy so I hope you let us know what your outcome was for this particular cruise.

Due to some health issues DH is often in the cabin spending time on the balcony. It also takes him awhile in the morning to get going so we couldn't have an early cleaning.

We found that if we talk to the steward the first day they are more than happy to work with us. When he's ready I take the snoozing sign off the door and find the steward to tell them we're ready when they are. DH is frequently out on the balcony or on the couch when they come in to clean - it's not a problem. They just work around him :)

the Room stewards supervisor periodically checks the rooms during the week. If a certain number of rooms don't past an inspection. The room steward can be terminated immediately. I over heard a couple stewards talking about one who being sent home for not doing his job properly.

If the Guest requests little to no service, they aren’t going to tell them no. It will be noted by the RS and the Supervisor can verify that’s what the Guest asked for if need be. They aren’t going to be fired because Guests are slobs. If that were the case, then there would be a regular turnover of RS on Carnival. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked past cabins both in the morning and evening and they look like bombs have gone off in there. Totally nasty and I feel so bad for the RS who get stuck cleaning up after them. So disgusting. I can only imagine what these people’s homes look like.

The inspections that I know are done are the ones before new Guests arrive. I have seen the Supervisors inspecting cabins along with the RS during boarding. One time I had FTTF and was in my cabin early. They were doing an inspection a couple rooms down across the hall and the male supervisor was screaming at the female RS and brought her to tears. He told her it was unacceptable because she didn’t have something ready (I couldn’t understand it all clearly because he had a thick accent) and that Guests weren’t supposed to have to wait for anything.

So yes, they can be terminated if they aren’t doing their job, but I HIGHLY doubt it would be because of a random inspection mid cruise. Now if it’s because the RS is lazy and hasn’t been servicing the cabins like they should, then OK.

I am more bothered by the supervisor screaming within earshot of passengers than the steward forgetting to do something.

Yeah it was a little unnerving. My sister was in the cabin with me and we were almost afraid to go out the door. I felt bad for the RS. Thankfully there weren’t many Guests onboard then. It was right after I entered my cabin and I had FTTF. It was my first stop once getting on the ship.

Wow kind of surprised at the debate I sparked! I've gathered that I'll have to speak with the room steward and maybe a supervisor to see what we can do. Maybe if I offer them an extra tip they'll go along? It's only a 5 day cruise, and like a previous person said, I definitely don't change my sheets and towels or clean the bathroom over a 5-day span at home so it just seems super unnecessary while on vacation.

I'd be happy to check in with the steward every day if they need to see that we're alive, and it's not like I'll be able to lock the door from the outside so they'd be able to get in if there's an emergency while I'm not there so I'm not really seeing why it'd be a huge deal. Hopefully I'll have a quick conversation with the room guy and we can reach an agreement.

Thanks all!

I travel a lot, or used to before I retired. I also didn't need service everyday.

However, keep in mind the needs of the proprietor from the other side of the business.

What you and I ask is outside the norm. (requesting no service)

It throws up a red flag that can keep management up at nights.

Suicide? Drug running or manufacturing? Sex trafficking? Filming porn?

All of these things are done under the disguise or staying in a hotel. Yes, even high end hotels and yes, even can be done on a cruise ship.

To make all parties more comfortable, I'll usually take down my Do Not Disturb sign at least every 3rd day. Allows housekeeping in to do their primary job and to ensure the room is not being used for nefarious reasons.

Welcome to Cruise Critic. Just thank your lucky stars that you didn't ask a really controversial question. By now the post count would have been into the hundreds. Which controversial topics/questions, you ask? Try..........

Smoking on balcony's,

Can I eliminate my auto tips?,

Pre-tipping,

Chair Hogging,

What's 1 + 1?

I certainly agree that with Las Vegas, etc. - privacy is pretty much gone in terms of hotel rooms/cabins and they're required to check every once and awhile.

I also suspect there's some sort of system to account for the life jackets in each cabin, to make sure they're back after muster, aren't taken somewhere else on the ship, etc.

It has nothing to do with Las Vegas. It's been that way long before then. There is no way they are checking in on someone as that other post said every 12 hours - that is ridiculous. So if I check in to a hotel or the ship at 1:00PM, someone is going to knock on my door at 1:00AM? Sorry, not happening.

Also life jackets are not taken to muster and they are checked when the stewards clean the cabin in between guests.

Plenty of hotels changed their policies after Vegas, Google it. I didn't say every 12 hours, but you can rest assured the cabin stewards are not allowed to leave a room unchecked for the duration of a 7 day cruise.

I know they're not required, but I still see some people take them to muster, also see them in the hallways, pools, etc. from time to time.

I didn't say you said every 12 hours, I said the other post that mentioned Las Vegas (it's #14 in case you want to go back and check). I also said previously that the Guests will need to physically see the Room Stewards every 24 hours as that is a requirement for safety. As far as hotels, let someone knock on my door in the middle of the night. GUARANTEE you I'm not opening it no matter who they say they are.

Haven't seen an orange lifejacket at muster since 2010 on Celebrity Eclipse nor in the hallways or at the pools on any of my cruises. I don't think that is something the RS check when they enter a cabin besides when they are turning them over. They shouldn't be opening closets with Guest's belongings in them since that is where most of the time they are stored. And it might be kind of hard to see the basket under the bed if they are stored there with all the luggage people put there. Could cause quite an issue if someone walked by while the door was propped open and saw the RS rifling through the closet or moving all the suitcases out from under the bed. I don't see that happening. But either way......
