Equinox on Sea Days

Do not worry, there will be activities, abound... if you want to participate or not is a different issue.

There are always things planned and will be posted in the dailies, your in-room TV and on a board at CS.

bon voyage

Sea days are time to relax for most people. Most of the passengers will be on deck sunning, reading and just chilling out. The ship isn't going to have a lot of stuff going on. An odd trivia game, wine tasting etc. but not enough to keep you entertained all day if relaxing isn't your cup of tea. You can play cards, hit the spa, the gym, watch a movie in your cabin. Personally I usually hang out by the pool and have a few beers, get lunch, more beers, then head to dinner. Plenty to do in the evenings usually.

Neither are we. We were on the Equinox in December and we were bored silly on sea days. We have been on many cruises but for us, our experience on Equinox caused us to rethink a future cruise with Celebrity.

There is only so much "people watching", "sitting with a good book", "watching the ocean go by", eating and drinking a person can do in a day.

We were disappointed that Celebrity now considers botox presentations, watch & jewelry sales, guess the art value and other promotional get togethers as actual activities people want to pay money to experience.

Perhaps if we were new to cruising or if we were taking a vacation from a hectic work schedule, we may feel differently. Everyone is different and what someone considers fun activities is subjective but we thought Equinox was a bust on this topic. However it did hit it out of the park for service, food and overall cleanliness. A beautiful ship, just nothing to do.

It's one of the reasons I really prefer to sail with a group of friends. Sitting around in a big group can be a lot of fun and the time seems to fly by. I can do a sea day or two if it's just me and the wife, but I don't think I could handle much more than 2 in a row without my friends.

I think you can be as engaged as you want to be, unless you are very hard to please or only have a narrow range of interests. There are usually guest lectures (which we usually find quite interesting), demonstrations of one kind or another, dance lessons, crew vs guests sports activities, trivia, bingo, gambling tournaments, live music and occasionally a ships tour. You can head to the spa or gym or casino. Watch a movie. Or yes, relax on a bar stool or lounger and engage in conversation with your fellow cruisers. We love sea days and have never been bored.

That’ s funny: I can people-watch, sit with a good book and watch the ocean go by all day every day. To me, that’s what vacation is all about.

I totally agree and you are so right; when you travel with friends or make special connections while onboard, it completely changes the dynamic of the cruise.

I'm curious - What kind of activities during sea days would you like, enjoy or participate in?? I come home from a cruise and friends ask, What did you do on sea days?, and I say not much, time just seems to fly bye....

I don't think Celebrity is the cruise line for people who need to be entertained all day long. There are definitely lines for that, where you have hustle and bustle all day long. We don't need to be entertained; we can entertain ourselves and find lots to do or nothing at all. I bring my Kindle and my cross stitching and just relax. The gym takes up some time, the walking track out on deck, and often we find the lectures interesting. And... in 14 cruises on Celebrity we have spent maybe a TOTAL of 15 minutes at the pool or on the pool deck!

My husband was "worried" he'd be bored senseless on the 7 days in a row at sea on our first TA. We have taken a second and have plans for more.

The Equinox is one of the S Class ships with the Hot Glass shows presented by employees of the Corning Museum of Glass. The hot glass studio is on Deck 14 near the open grass area and there are usually two shows per day on Sea Days. The team of three glass artists are extremely talented and create beautiful works of art during each show. Check the dailies for show times and plan to attend at least one show. Periodically, pieces of glass are given away in the free raffle drawings. (We won a stunning glass bowl on our last cruise) and on the last sea day you will have to opportunity to bid on some of the glass pieces during the auction.

If you like logistics, the "behind the scenes" tour of the ship is fascinating. It is priced like an excursion and held on a sea day. This is not the same as the free galley tour or the free Captain's Club theatre backstage tour. This one visits far more interesting areas of the ship and lasts several hours.

There is usually at least one presentation by a high level officer about how the ship is run which includes a Q&A period.

The Sky Observation Lounge on the Lido Deck is rarely used during sea days and is the perfect quiet getaway.

As others have said - check the daily newsletter for sea day activities and enjoy your cruise.

We love sea days, especially TAs. I do nothing, literally nothing, except sit and stare at the glorious sea with a beer in my hand,

We’re not sun or pool people either but love sea days. It’s our opportunity to chat to others, read books, play bocce, watch the people. Grab a cake and coffee, mingle at a bar, watch a film, have a leisurely lunch ....

Just got off Equinox two weeks ago and I think we were the last cruise for the Hot Glass Show.

We were on one of those 3 sea days cruises that we chose deliberately. In some ways there is not a lot to do, most of the activities have been listed, in other ways there is a lot to do - we enjoyed the Round the World wine tasting and did trivia a couple of times. We chatted up a couple of the bartenders during slow times (careful and respectful of their time) and they always have interesting things to say about their home countries and lives. Also met and chatted up random people.

The pace of activities in much slower than RCCL or Carnival, but then you usually don't have to wait for them and the crowd for an activity is much smaller. This isn't the trip for someone who needs lots of outside entertainment though.

The only things I really missed were the Caribbean band at poolside - if they did that, it was at times when we weren't around and the lack of a true dedicated dance floor - there is dancing in the evenings, but it is in the foyer, and not what I would call enticing for dancing, although the setup is a nice way to listen to the music, you can sit on one of several floors rising up from the foyer and still hear the music and enjoy a drink or coffee and dessert - it allows you to regulate how loud the music is - too loud one evening, move up a couple of floors.

We just sailed on the Equinox for our 4th time a couple of months ago ... and this is what we did on our sea days (which I absolutely love!):

Hot Glass show

Organized lawn games, some with officers

Listened to live music while enjoying specialty coffee or cocktail

Enjoyed time at the indoor pool

Spent time in the Persian Gardens* / Relaxation room* for sail away

Casino time with some free or low priced tournaments / raffles

Movies in Celebrity Central

Lecture series in the theater

Demonstrations (martini making / cooking / napkin folding) in the lobby area

Special luncheons in Murano / Tuscan Grille

Gatherings with roll call members

Elegant Tea*

Wine tasting*

Trivia

*for elite members or higher or cabin class (aqua) or for purchase

Fellow cruisers via the Roll Call often plan activities. Slot pulls, card games, craft groups are typical. Check the Roll Call for your cruise.

From reading threads on Cruise Critic I wonder if people have lost the ability or interest in planning their own activities. I remember as a young boy the activities that were planned by friends were the best. I look at the younger generations in my family and all I see are family members going to activities planned by others.

Corning Hot Glass area is closed on the Equinox. There is a sign saying they are taking a break. Scuttlebutt is another company is taking it over and it will be some type of interactive show with a fee for participating. But we all know about scuttlebutt and it's reliability

We will be on a 9-night cruise later this year, with 4 sea days. I like them, but my wife is not all that fond of them. There are a few things I plan to do....

  • Sleep in a bit longer (we are on vacation!) - enjoy a later breakfast
  • Take naps on our balcony - never get to do this at home due to working
  • Put on comfy shoes and walk the ship - exercise
  • Load my tablet with good books - the Hideaway looks like an awesome place to read!
  • Take my table to Cafe al Bacio for an extra latte and treat
  • Do a wine blending class
  • Spend time on a lounger in the Solarium (we do enjoy pools, but not all day every day)
  • Find other sociable people in one of the bars/lounges
  • Go up top and look at the endless sea (seeing all that water makes me forget about everything else!)

Somehow, I don't think I will be bored! :D:cool:

The only thing I've never been on a cruise is bored. Sometimes I feel like chilling out and sometimes the pool, sometimes the bar.

I don't count on the cruise to entertain me. I enjoy being with friends... And making new ones. If there is some activity we enjoyable, it's a bonus

A lot of good ideas already presented so I won't repeat them all.

I like sea days, as long as there are only a couple in a row. Not a pool person either, but do love to use the time to relax. There is always something to participate in if you are interested. One thing I do not already mentioned is download some of my favorite shows to my tablet to watch on sea days.

That said, I do agree with the poster who talked about so many activities being charged for, or specifically designed to sell you something. Celebrity never used to do that and it is very disappointing that now they do. But there are enough other things to do that unless you want constant excitement you should be fine.
