Indonesian Rysttafel

We are just off of NA yesterday. One evening in the MDR we were speaking with Denise, who is the Assistant Dining Room Manager. We were telling her that we feel like the MDR menu has become very limited over the past few years. Her response to us was “Have you ever tried Indonesian food?”

The next thing we knew, we were set up to be served Indonesian Rysttafel on our next night in the MDR. This was tasty, delicious and AWESOME. Our server told us that he was jealous because that’s what he gets to eat when he goes home. Our Tamarind servers told us that it was actually cooked up there.

Thanks Denise for making us feel special...

That looks delicious. We once had an Indonesian lunch on one of our cruises and it was wonderful. Is this something that can be requested? We will be on the Zaandam in July and would love to have this food!

I had one on the Noordam last month, arranged by our Maitre D’; it was not as involved as one’s I had previously had in Amsterdam but was still tasty and much aporeciated. On another night the two of us had an individual Indian meal with exceptionally good Pakora. We were both impressed and happy with the responsiveness of HAL to our requests both in the MDR and Pinnacle, and the skillful preparations of Tuna with a miso sauce and Veal Loin with a hearty mushroom sauce (albeit a little salty) in the MDR were exceptional. Most dishes were on the mark and even the misses, such as a seared foie gras (too thin), were close and had flavor.

Fun fact,Rijsttafel is actually Dutch and not Indonesian!

When the Dutch were in their former Dutch Colony Indonesia, they very much liked the Indonesian food but were often confronted with the fact that they did not want to choose from all of the possible Indonesian types of dishes. This is why they thought they would like something of everything, resulting in many types of servings at once. A Rijsttafel served in Indonesian restaurants in Holland can consist of something like 15 to 25 different sorts of food! A smaller version (only five or so types of food next to white rice) can be served on one plate and then it is called Nasi Rames.

Looking forward to the full experience with some traveling companions at the end of May, but on land, in Amsterdam, pre-cruise...I've picked out a highly recommended place called Kartika, just north of the cluster of big museums.

Decades ago it was also easy to find this dish in Curacao - quite elaborate, but searching recently turned up only one good recommendation and quite far from the Curacao cruise ship doc - though they did mention one could find a lot of visiting ship's crews there. The tradition continues.

Past HAL experiences served it at Mariner luncheon, a Neptune suites guest luncheon and even on the main menu. Best I had outside of Indonesia for breakfast ( and had it everyday) was staying at the Goodwood Park Hotel in Singapore before a great Volendam Asia cruise. .

We enjoyed a wonderful meal buffet style, all Indonesian food at the Boat House in Curacao. It's worth checking out which night they serve it if you happen to be docked in Willemstad.

You won't get a full Rijsttafel there, but at Iguana Cafe in Willemstad, Curacao, right smack on the side of the canal for really cool ship watching, you can get a really good Satay Ayam
