What is the most disgusting thing you have seen fellow passengers do?

Recommended Posts

The difference between using the napkin and a tissue is that the server or dining staff unknowingly, have to handle that disgusting, snotty, germ filled napkin and most likely not wash their hands before setting up the table for the next guests. Hopefully a tissue would be put into a pocket for later disposal. But judging by the observations and comments here, that would probably make too much sense. Another reason to carry a pocket size hand gel.

This is why when I eat out I always ask for paper napkins. Most of the high end restaurants don't have them, so I will use cocktail napkins.

Seen to many blowing noses in cloth napkins and who knows if they are washed in hot enough water or dryer.

Curious which ships 'make guests sanitize hands' at any point on the cruise? I've never once seen anyone making any guest sanitize their hands anywhere on the ship.
According to your signature, all of your cruises have been on Carnival....if you ever take the blinders off and cruise on Celebrity, RCI or NCL, you will see it, sometimes with attendants squirting sanitizer into your palms as you enter the buffet area.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner!!

This happens all the time on other lines, ecspecially if there is some kind of virus or sickness around. I remember the first time seeing an attendant standing at the entrance to the buffet, or dining room squirting the sanitizer into everyones hands.

Its pretty bad when some people refuse to use cloth napkins because they seen someone blow their nose in them a few times...lol Imagine all the stuff they use that is never seen. Will you all stop using towels? Have you ever seen what goes into some of these towels? Haha

Carnival seems to be the best fit for us though. I mention Carnival also because well, this IS the Carnival board.

Also, not all of my cruises are in my signature. Just the ones from 2016 until now.

So that being said, no, I have never seen someone 'making' people use sanitizer. The best I have seen are the little machines at certain places on the ship.

If there is a current norovirus outbreak, or there was one on the prior cruise, they will muster attendants at the doors to the dining areas and proactively push sanitizer on you. It is a good idea because lots of people just do not think about it but they have no problem being sanitary when requested.

The staff does not do this all the time, unfortunately. There would be a lot less norovirus if they did.

RCCL was the only one where I saw it forced. Our cruise was delayed due to the previous having reportable Norovirus, and it continued on our trip. Hand-sanitizing was enforced in MDR and both entering and exiting the photo area (possibly other areas too).

For the nose issues: I agree that removing yourself from the area is more polite, but not always practical. If someone has a perfume allergy and someone nearby has a strong perfume they may take a sneezing fit and be unable to leave in time before needing a tissue. Tried something spicy and nose starts running - might not be able to make it out without dripping somewhere. I carry a pocket pack of tissues and hand sanitizer but there are often comments about people not having pockets and don't carry a purse (lanyard threads). I don't tend to see paper products in the lido area either and similar situations could happen.

The grossest thing I have seen is people in bare feet go into public restrooms, this seems super gross to me but then again I wear water shoes in the pool in the lake and in the ocean. The only places I go in bare feet is my own shower.

You do realize that you just entered a community pool in your dirty disgusting water shoes that you just walked out of the bathroom in. That's pretty gross too.

Last week on the Sunshine, a women in front of me at the breakfast buffet used a pair of things to get some Eggs Benedict and put it on her plate. When she realized that it had salmon on it, she picked it up with her fingers and put it back on the buffet tray! I asked the attendant to through that item away and he did. Then this same woman couldn't separate the strips of bacon with the tongs so she used her fingers! I asked her if she had any consideration for others, which she replied "who the hell are you?". I LOUDLY replied "someone who doesn't want Norovirus from a person like YOU! She was so embarrassed that she left the area without eating.

And THIS is why I generally avoid the buffet anywhere.

How about excusing yourself and going to the washroom where there is tissue? Carry tissue in your pocket or in your purse. If you need to blow your nose, there’s a really good chance this was not the first time you needed to do it. Common sense.

You've never sneezed before you had a chance to:

1) Make to the bathroom, which could be across ship?

2) Dig through your purse to find that tissue (not a problem I have as i don't carry a purse...I do have a hanky in my back pocket, but even then a sneeze can come on before I get to it)?

I'd rather someone, who suddenly has to sneeze do it into a table napkin which WILL BE STERILIZED AND WASHED before next use, than even their elbow crook where it could spray and might certainly stain their shirt. To me THAT'S common sense. Heck, you wipe your MOUTH with that napkin, which has plenty of nasty germs and probably some saliva on it. How is that much better?

There was a drunk kid that decided to cool of in a nasty Cozumel water fountain. On the way back to the boat he decided to cool off by jumping off the pier near the boats. Luckily there was a ladder he got to and climbed back up. Pier officials grabbed him, I thought they where going to arrest him but they escorted him back to the ship and told him not to get back off. Same kid, every night in the casino at midnight, he would get the max cash allowable on his card. He would pay hundreds on all the numbers on the craps table. His dad was a surgeon but I can't imagine what daddy said when he got back.. No I'm not a stalker, but I am at the craps table most of the time when they are open. I thought a time or two they where going to kick him out of the casino for language and acting a fool but he kept throwing the dealers $100 chips. It was probably the most people watching fun I've ever had

First of all, you are making assumptions that the servers don't wash their hands during or between services without any proof whatsoever. That's shameful. Secondly, do you think your mouth (which the napkins are there for) has any fewer germs than your nose and is any less disgusting? People really need to dial their drama levels down a notch or two.

As of last March, RCCL still had the "Washy washy" girls. Don't know if they still do or not. Carnival used to have them as well but I haven't seen any for quite a few cruises now.

While the "Washy washy" girls will not give you any wall-to-wall counselling for not using the sanitizer, they will point it out to you several times and give you the evil eye if you don't use it. Of course, a little wall-to-wall counseling would be beneficial for some cruises.

So no, the won't "make" you use it but only a blind/deaf/a$$ person would not know that it is expected.

We did not see any crew members at any of the places to dine on the Carnival Horizon, offering hand sanitizer. The stand alone dispensers were there as well as the touch less hand washing area at the Marketplace but VERY few guests using them. We have seem the crew on RCI and Celebrity but they certainly don't "make" people use it and you do see people walk right by.

The thing is, if everyone is not in compliance, then the handles of the serving utensils at the buffets are "dirty" from all those who have coughed into their hands, passed the soap and water on the way out from the washrooms and God knows what else. We clean our hands only to have them contaminated moments later by those people. My solution was to carry a pocket size hand sanitizer and clean my hands again before eating.

I have to agree with you on the sudden sneeze. There is no time and you wouldn't do that into your elbow crook anyway, but blowing your nose into the dinner napkin when you have a choice, is just disgusting.

Well that is true, but there’s one problem with cruise ship pools that may make this even more disgusting. And that is some lines use sea water to fill the pools and hot tubs. Depending on the ship/line, and where you are in the itinerary, they will recirculate sea water through instead of using chlorinated brominated or otherwise treated water. So there is a chance that the pool or hot tub he got into? Was salt water and not treated.

YUCK

egads! Well shoot.

I don't think they would have time to wash their hands as they are to busy.

Anyone who has ever had Noro Virus will tell you the drama is justified.

I totally agree it is disgusting.

Smoking at the table after the person had finished their meal was also a disgusting habit which thankfully with the smoking bans doesn't happen now.
