Newbie Question re Lanyards

Will I want a lanyard to carry some sort of card on the ship? I’m in the Haven. How often will I need to get the card out? If it’s in a see thru plastic lanyard case will I need to remove it every time I need the card or can it stay in the see thru thing and be shown/scanned that way? ( if i need to remove each time even if it’s in a see thru holder I would be more likely to use my phone case crossbody that has a slot for a card).

Please excuse my newbie ignorance!

You'll need it to get in your room and any doors that lead into the haven, any purchases made including specialty dining, any drink you order besides the free ones, and one card will be needed for meals in the MDR or o'shehans (or equivalent). It'll need to be out of the sleeve as they swipe it. To enter or exit the boat the scan the barcode so it might work in the sleeve.

The KEYCARD

You will need access to the card every time you board or leave the ship -

Every time you enter the Haven controlled area you will need the card -

Entering your cabin you will need the card -

You order a bar or restaurant beverage you will need the card -

When checking in at a specialty restaurant - the card -

You buy something in a gift duty free photo shop - the card -

You gamble in the Casino - the card -

You order a shore excursion - the card -

You visit the Guest Registration desk for assistance - the card -

The list continues - I won't bore you further you get the idea -

Having it on a lanyard is convenient - having it an enclosed device - not so

Your phone case seems to be a good choice.

Readers have other ideas that work well for them - - -

Just make sure it is secure when you are not using it -

I keep mine on the lanyard and hand that over any time it is needed in a bar or restaurant, and especially when ordering a drink from waitstaff who then take it to the bar. The lanyard makes it easy to get my card back, less likely to get lost or mixed up with someone else’s card

It also depends on the ship. It appears the Bliss uses near field rf so you do not need to remove it from the plastic.

One person already posted that the Bliss will not punch those cards because it damages the new cards

I used the clear plastic last year on the Escape. We did have to pull the card out a bunch but was not bad. We will be on the Bliss with the same plastic sleeves in 3 weeks and will see if we ever have to remove the cards

Thank you all! I read somewhere on these boards that at least on the bliss they won’t punch a hole in the card? But from these answers I think my crossbody phone holder which has an outer secure slot may be perfect for me. I’ll get DH a lanyard

Wearing a cruise card on a lanyard is not my style.

I carry the cruise card in a small leather holder that Celebrity gave to passengers a few years ago. This card case goes into a small fabric purse along with lipstick, some medication I may need and a small camera.

I carry the purse while onboard.

I transfer the purse to a larger tote when going ashore.

If you should decide to wear the card on a lanyard, I would like to suggest that you do not wear it when going ashore. A blatant tip -off that you are a tourist !

Don't just have anyone punch a hole in your card !

Punching a hole in the wrong place renders the card just a useless card -

Then you need to go to Guest Services for a replacement.

The hole must be punched out of the way of the swiping of the card.

And depending on the ship if the card has to be inserted in a slot to open the cabin door.

Too close to the edge of the card and it may cause the card to fracture and fail.

Never tamper with the magnetic stripe.

Treat it like your ATM card - it is your go to card for all access to the ship.

Mine either. I’ll use my MZ Wallace Micro Crosby off the ship for sure. DH has no style. Lol.

Good info! And 3 weeks? 6/30? That’s when we are going. But you are probably the week before?

I just use a small purse...because you will likely want a comb, lipstick, tissues, etc.....and unless you carry those things in your pocket, you need some sort of bag. I mean, at a hotel, how do you carry your key? I've never needed a lanyard for anyplace I've been.

i keep my card in a small wristlet along with a comb, hair twister (if my hair is down and i want to pop outside i need to tie it back so i dont get windblown!), cash/casino chips for gambling, and oddly a green tea bag or two because ive found that not every tea station has green tea so i grab a few extras when i can! lol

The cruise ship lanyard...the equivalent of wearing a fannie pack on land. Efficient? Sure. But just say no. ;)

Lol. But as the parent of millenials I was shocked to learn that fanny packs are now cool or as my kids would put it a "thing". Both my girls have fanny packs from their sorority and use them at music festivals/sporting events/gay pride parade etc...

Wow, really? Well, as they say, all fashion is cyclical. But that’s one fad that should have died in the 80s. :')

They carried over into the 90s and that's currently the flash back decade of trend. I was 4-14 during that decade... the fashion is not worthy of a flashback lol.

For men, a lanyard probably isn't necessary. As a woman, I don't always have a free pocket and am very active (lots of walking, fitness area, etc.) and a purse just isn't my style for much of the day while onboard. For dinner, I just wrap the lanyard around my card and put it in a purse. Please keep in mind that I tend to go on longer cruises with a lot of sea days. I don't wear a lanyard off the ship. That just screams "tourist: come pick my pocket."
