Do check in times matter?

But do times matter? Would they let him on before 1?

Times do not matter. General boarding starts between 11:15 and 11:30. The OP is interested in the Vibe, so they need to arrive very early. In NY, Haven, Ambassador, Platinum Plus, Platinum, and Casino Guests board before General Boarding.

The Buffet and O'Shehans open at 11:30 for lunch. The Taste and Savor Main Dining Rooms open at noon. Margaritaville opens at noon (for an additional charge and fills fast with Haven guests who get it for free).

No, the time you pick to go through security does not matter. The only time that matter is 2 hrs before the cruise ship departure. If you arrived earlier than the time you picked, it is fine. They would not know and once past security, you can board the cruise ship if it is already at 11 am. If it before 11 am, you would just past security and sit in the lobby to wait to be on board by hearing them calling boarding #/pass you are given.

They are strict at some ports though with the arrival times especially for the bigger ships. I have heard of people been told to come back later. You should be able to drop off bags though even if you can’t get through security.

Just filled out my documents and my only choice was 1:00-1:30. Are these times set in stone? Obviously I'd like to check in ASAP.

No, it just gives the cruise line a heads up on when the majority will be arriving. We happen to be the type that love to be on the ship asap. We do not show up at 10 am but do arrive by 10:30 or so and that is what we put on our information. Because we have to depend on wheel chairs we do try to stick close to the time we say.

I’m sailing out of NYC, hope they’re not strict! I want to get on board ASAP!

This up coming cruise will be my third leaving from NYC. If you go earlier before boarding you wait along with a few hundred other people. Once the ship is ready, they will start calling numbers and if you have that boarding pass number you are able to board. If you get their around 11 boarding has started and just about the time you have passed passport inspection and registered you can just walk in with no waiting. We try to get there around 10ish (remember the prior cruisers are still getting off the ship) because we park on the next pier we want to make sure as people leave the parking garage we can get a spot easily. Now if you want the Vibe pass you do need to be there as early as possible to get a lower boarding number. They only tell you to come later if the ship arrived late to the pier due to weather conditions. My thoughts, I am on vacation the minute I wake up that morning and full speed ahead, let's get the party rolling!!! So in answer to your question it does not matter what time you get there as long as it is 2 hours before sailing!

We don't know if the time matters or not. Even if it isn't enforced today it might be enforced tomorrow, we can't know that.

I think that it's unfair that some might be allowed to board around 11 and other have to wait until maybe 15 but that's how it is, IF THEY DECIDE TO ENFORCE THE TIME, which they don't seem to do right now. (I have been told that it's not unfair so that's just my opinion.)

As of today NCL is not enforcing the checkin times, but I would not be surprised if they begin to do so in the future. There has to be a reason that they started assigning them.

Thank you for the update. I wonder if it depends on numbers of passengers expected. I have heard some ports on some days have enforced recently.

Assigned check in times mean nothing. The only reason NCL gives you a time is they know a large portion of their passengers are ignorant and will abide by the 'suggested' check in time thus evening out the crowds.

Continue to say that when they start enforcing them.

As a newbie to NCL, when do the check in times appear? Are they just specified in your edocs? Or do you get to choose?

Peteukmcr,

Welcome to NCL, hope you have a great cruise. I’m not positive about the procedure for non US residents, but for us when one starts filling out their EDocs it will give you a choice of times to arrive for check in(not boarding), and I think the earlier you fill them out the more choices one has.

Happy Cruising

Many thanks. I've completed online check in but there was no option there for a check in time, so I assume it'll be specified when the e-docs turn up.

Haha, ok. You keep showing up exactly when instructed....
That strategy worked great on Carnival until........ they too once had times to arrive and didn't enforce...... and then they did. People with 1pm arrival times who showed up at 10am were directed to a waiting area and it didn't matter if it was 100 degrees or snowing out.

All people are saying is: today NCL doesn't enforce but tomorrow they may.

I was under the impression it was just the very busy ports / ships that you specified arrival time for. If there wasn’t the option check in times will be specified on the edocs.

Hehe, sure. What did Carnival do with those miscreants who had a 10am arrival time and didn't show until 2pm? Leave them on the pier?

Yup, I will gladly stand in a 100 degree for hours on end when instructed to.... The ignorant never cease to amaze me.

smh.... if you took the time to read about the CCL staggered arrival time procedure, instead of a snarky reply, you would be educated that it clearly states if you arrive after your scheduled arrival time you may proceed to check in immediately.

Again, NCL doesn't enforce arrival times but they may at any time.

It's ignorant to believe change doesn't happen.......

On my eDocs it states "Boarding begins at 12:00 pm. Please do not arrive earlier than 1 hour prior to boarding time shown"
