Rare cr8tiv1 Posted September 2, 2018 #26 Share Posted September 2, 2018 Yes Princess (Grand) evacuates the SF market for the summer and does RT"S LA. Princess has no ship in SF for the summer of 2020. Princess Grand returns to SF in October for Mexico and HI cruises. I'm saddened to think we will be without a grand class ship out of LA. Ruby class/Royal Class is too big. So I immediately booked a cruise on the Grand. What a surprise....my favorite window suite was already taken. I'm happy that some people still prefer the Grand, otherwise the prices for the Royal would be even higher than they are now. Keep on sailing. :D
Geoffa30 Posted September 2, 2018 #28 Share Posted September 2, 2018 I feel Sky Princess is coming to the West Coast. My belief is that the Retreat Pool has a magradome.
pris993 Posted September 2, 2018 #29 Share Posted September 2, 2018 Count me as one that is excited about the Grand's possible move to LA. I'll take her over the Royal any day. me too, will be sorry to see her leave SF
pris993 Posted September 2, 2018 #30 Share Posted September 2, 2018 What occurred to me after finishing my above thoughts and reading the responses: a very interesting new alternative for Princess would be 10 or 11 day open-jaw cruises between San Pedro and Vancouver via Alaska. With slight differences between the northbound and southbound (say Sitka one way, Icy Strait the other) sufficient for some interest in a 21 day round trip (with segments alternating 10 and 11 days). Could even get in four Alaska ports without the needed service call to Victoria. But if they replaced the 10 day San Francisco with the above they would lose everyone who (erroneously) thinks booking multi-city air travel is too difficult and expensive. Plus those who only book closed loop USA cruises because they don't have passports. So would any west coasters bite on this? No, my home port is SF, I am only booking round trips out of SF to Mexico or California coastals... have no desire to fly anywhere any more... my dh is 85 and I am 71... flying is a pain in the butt. So love the round trips, do not care to do Hawaii, being a sea in the winter not interested in that either. . So Hope Princess keeps a ship in SF year round in the future. Astro Flyer Posted September 2, 2018 #32 Share Posted September 2, 2018 (edited) So no summer Alaska cruises out of SF? What a bummer. Since the schedules haven’t been released yet, it’s only speculation about the 2020 Alaskan season. Coral, Emerald, Island, Ruby & Royal have May 2020 repositioning cruises from LA to Vancouver for Alaska. The Grand could reposition to SF for Alaska after completing those 3 cruises (Mexico-7&10 days; CA Coastal-7 days) from LA. The Grand doesn’t show any cruise after the latest cruise ends in LA on 5/30/20. No one knows the Summer 2020 schedules to Alaska so might want to hold off on being too bummed. ;) Edited September 2, 2018 by Astro Flyer
riclop Posted September 3, 2018 #33 Share Posted September 3, 2018 On April 20, 2020 the Grand makes a RT to HA out of SF disembarking on May 5. Then on May 6 she’s in LA with 3 RT voyages out of LA. That’s as far out as the schedule goes. Does anyone know if this is a permanent move? If so will we get a ship home ported in SF? Princess moves there ships around like crazy. Rare HaveDogWillTravel Posted September 3, 2018 Author #34 Share Posted September 3, 2018 I love a nice promenade deck. The Royal and others in that class do not have one. The tiny little bits of deck they do have won’t be what I’d like. From deck plans, the upper decks seem small compared to the Grand Class. Full disclosure, I’ve not sailed on the Royal, but if they must change the ship home ported in SF, I’d vote for the Pacific Princess if I can’t have a promenade or Emerald if I could. I also like the Island. Even with its truncated back end.

Coffeeluvr05 Posted September 4, 2018 #36 Share Posted September 4, 2018 I would love Alaska round trip cruises from LA! Count me in if that's the case! :D As long as they don't stop doing them from SF! Although, a nice long cruise from LA to Alaska would be nice too. I just like being able to drive to the port. Rare cr8tiv1 Posted September 25, 2018 #37 Share Posted September 25, 2018 Just returned from the LA/Alaska roundtrip from LA. More than the majority were (southern) Californians! 550 Elites. And the weather was perfect. Seas were calm too. Delightful cruise.
Roatanfans Posted September 28, 2018 #38 Share Posted September 28, 2018 what would be nice is if they did 12 day RT out of LA with and option to board in SF for a 10 day, but that would have it's own headaches I'm sure (just got back from an MSC cruise where every port had people on and off the ship- it was interesting to see it run like that!) Rare Cruise Raider Posted September 28, 2018 #39 Share Posted September 28, 2018 We just sailed on the Grand earlier this month and during the Captain's Circle party, they mentioned there were no immediate plans to replace the Grand in San Francisco when she goes down to LA. It's a shame as we have such a nice beautiful newer cruiseship terminal in SF. Oh well ... if I have to fly, it may just be time to cruise on some other lines. Princess pretty much held us captive being right here in our backyard but I am not adverse to cruising on other lines since I have to fly to another port anyway. I see a lot of Seattle, LA or San Diego flights in my future if they abandoned us in SF. Hey ... maybe another cruiseline will even come to SF if Princess leaves for good .. guess that wouldn't be the end of the world. I just hope it isn't Disney or Carnival; Celebrity or Royal great. timetobook Posted September 29, 2018 #40 Share Posted September 29, 2018 I can't see Princess taking a ship from SF. They almost always sail full. Someone posted on Vicki's FB page that they heard the Grand was going to be sent to LA, and the Ruby would be coming to SF??? I guess we'll just have to wait and see. need2cruisesoon Posted September 29, 2018 #41 Share Posted September 29, 2018 Can't won't shed any tears as the Grand exits SF in a couple years. Let the tugboats give her a sail away shower, better options will be on the horizon.

HI Lisa I've been looking at the Holland America threads and have found they now have 4 ships with absolutely no smoking inside (not even the casinos). There is no more smoking on balconies and these 4 ships have only one high deck starboard aft smoking station. I have always been enticed by their itineraries. Their website leaves much to be desired compared to Princess but they do have interesting west coast sailings. Happy cruising...... I can get you that contact info if you'd like. It is so much easier than dealing with their website as they oftentimes will only allow you to book a room category and not a specific cabin. That is where the PVP comes in....they can assign specific cabins. Celebrity is the same as what you describe with their smoking policy ... very restricted areas for smoking and absolutely no smoking inside. Still no SF roundtrip but I think they use San Diego as an embarkation / debarkation port and I have no problem with that. Not as easy for us that live close to SF, but a reasonable alternative. Jacqueline Currently it's 5 ships with no interior smoking - Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam , Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam. All others restrict indoor smoking to a section of the casino, and there are some "smoke free" nights". The only outdoor smoking areas on HAL ships are by the aft pool. AtlantaCruiser72 Posted September 30, 2018 #46 Share Posted September 30, 2018 I'd actually be happy to see Ruby replace the Grand in SF - I think Ruby/Emerald/Crown are the three best "Grand Class" derivative ships in the fleet! With Golden and Star leaving the fleet, Grand will not be far behind I'm sure. Either that or she replaces Sun/Sea on the "Princess Australia" grouping when one of them leaves the fleet. If Princess plan doing a longer summer Alaska season from LA I hope they throw in a few 14 night cruises that pick up some additional Alaskan ports. With the extra sea days coming/going the 10 day from San Francisco and 12 day from LA really don't get you much extra "Alaska" vs the 7 days trips roundtrip Seattle. I'd really love to see Princess place a ship in Vancouver doing 10/11 day Alaska roundtrips all summer with Glacier bay and the 5 major ports (Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point, Sitka and Ketchikan) on the 10 night and add in Tracy Arm Fjord or Hubbard Glacier on the 11 night. That would be great seller especially if they used the Coral Princess :)
CruisinMinnie Posted October 3, 2018 #47 Share Posted October 3, 2018 Looks like Princess is still in the process of moving ships around. At least, when I checked for future cruises out of San Francisco this morning, the Grand is there doing the coastal to Vancouver on May 5th 2020. There are no longer any cruises out of Los Angeles on the Grand.

I know on our latest cruise on the Grand earlier this month, during the captain's club cocktail party, they were kind of taking a poll on how people felt about the Grand leaving SF. I know that itinerary with the northern west coast was popular. Maybe they are looking into SF to Vancouver and then alternating with Vancouver to SF. ???? I was booked on the may 5th cruise when they cancelled it...now I got an email offering my spot back. I'm a bit bummed because I found a pretty sweet b2b on 2 Hal ships to go from San Diego to Seattle. However I'd rather take this cruise from SF to Astoria and Nanaimo.
