Progressive check in

Since the last time we were on a Princess cruise, there is now a "progressive check in" by deck, at least in Ft. Lauderdale. So - a few questions, if anyone can answer them!

• How recent is this process?
• How strictly is this enforced? The email I received indicated that the first group on board will not be boarding until 12:30 and the final group [that's us!] will not be allowed to board until 2:30.
• If I show up earlier, will I be allowed to check in or will I be asked to stay outside until the designated time?

 

I know several lines have gone to this type of system and I know someone has to be last, but I hate to lose several hours roaming around a new ship because of this. Normally we would show up for checkin around 11, understanding that we would probably have to wait, but I have almost never waited later than noon to board.

Any suggestions?

It's not mandatory, show up and board as you wish.

Arrive at your convenience! You will be checked in and boarded! Do note that the cabins are not usually available until 1:00 or a little after. But you are free to roam and explore the cruise ship!  Enjoy your cruise!

The boarding info you got is a suggestion, not a mandate.

Show up when you want and you will be boarded. The notification has been going on for years. To me it's silly and customer unfriendly. The entire ship can be boarded in an hour, so why try to string it out?

Just cruised last week and they did not appear to be holding people to their assigned (suggested) boarding. Just show and go!

After boarding they might tell you that the rooms won't be ready until 1 PM but you can always drop off your luggage in the cabin & go to lunch rather than carry it around with you,
