Hot Tub Cleanliness

What's the grossest thing I've seen is kids sitting in the hot tubs eating ice cream (with it dripping down their arms) and adults sitting in them all day or at least 3-4 hours and taking no bathroom breaks....I stay away from the hot tubs on board.

The ice cream bothers me FAR less than the swim diapers

Then don't touch anything in public ever again.

Doorknobs, chairs, handrails, loungers, tables, grocery carts, blah blah blah.  Pretty much any surface that the general public touches has fecal matter on it.

Yep so true...👍 and then we just do our best to keep our hands/fingers out of our eyes, nose, mouth - wash hands frequently, and moisturize. No portal of entry = no getting sick.

And especially do not touch or use paper money.  NASTY stuff.

Coins are fine.

I give up. I wash my hands frequently at home and more so on cruises. 46 cruises to date and I've yet to get sick.

I've been cruising since the early 1980s, used the pool and/or hot tub on every cruise so far, and have never been ill on or immediately after a cruise.

I think we all  know the by-product of too much drink and if people drink plenty of liquid but stop in the hot tub to long well we all know where that water is ending up.

Watch the water level to see if it elevates.  😮 😄

Very rarely get sick, but both the DH and myself got very sick on Rhapsody earlier this year.  We caught the flu, and that was WITH having received a flu shot previously.  Supposedly the shot does not cover all varies of the flu.  We are very careful about hand washing.  There were many crew members sick also.  Pretty much ruined our cruise.

Very sorry to hear that.

Hopefully it was short lived and you are back to full health now.

They flu vaccine covers 3 of the hundreds of varieties.  Each year, they decide which ones are most likely.  Most times they are pretty good at picking.  Other times not so good.  Sometimes they even change the formula and bring out a new version, but that is difficult due to how long it takes to grow the vaccine.

But since they only cover 3, if you get exposed to a different one, which you have not previously been exposed to, there is a problem.

But realize, most flus are spread by airborne droplets, not contact or hot tubs.

I really hope this happens far less than what a lot of people think, but I am not even remotely concerned about it from a cleanliness standpoint. I just cannot imagine an adult sitting in a hot tub, being too lazy to get out and go use the restroom.

Most of those hot tubs are full of people and maybe people don't get out to use the toilet because there might not be a space for them when they come back.

We were sick for over a month....got into my chest...was not fun.  😞  Luckily we don't get sick that often, but boy-o-boy were we sick with what we picked up on the cruise.

Thanks...sister is an infectious disease specialist.  She runs her own clinic, and is attached to two different hospitals.  She keeps me up to speed on the nasty bugs out there, and indeed told me about the current vaccine and it's limits.  I emailed her right away with symptoms while on the cruise...she was able to direct me to over the counter meds to help.

Omg that sounds awful.

Did the doctor diagnose what it was?

You might want to get a refund on your medical degree.  You're correct that hot tubs are not a method of transmission for influenza, but incorrect about direct contact or fomite contact.

Washing your hands continues to be the best way to prevent the spread of the vast majority of viral and bacterial infections.  You CAN get the flu from a doorknob.

Hmm, I guess CDC does not know that it is talking about.

The primary and most common route of infection is through inhalation.  It IS a respiratory disease.

Most hand to mouth transmission diseases are intestinal in nature.

Hmm, I guess you don't know how to read the CDC website, which clearly states that it CAN be spread through contact/fomite transmission:

Thanks for making my point.

Read the FIRST two sentences.  "... flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets ... can land in the mouths or noses of people ..."

And the part you highlight about surface transfer starts with LESS OFTEN....

My point is that you said flu isn't spread by contact, and you cited the CDC as your source.

And here I showed that the CDC says that contact actually is a source of transmission.

So, how exactly did I "make your point" when I flat-out showed you to be incorrect in stating that flu isn't transmitted by contact????

I know you really like to be right about everything, but the fact of the matter is, you made an incorrect statement about contact being a transmission vector for influenza.

Maybe you should re-read what I actually posted.

I never said it was not transferred by contact.  I said that it is typically spread by inhalation.

Notice, even CDC says it MIGHT (not that it WILL) be spread by contact.

So sorry that I misinterpreted your saying "not contact" as meaning you were saying it was not spread by contact.  :classic_rolleyes:

Let it go.  We're never going to agree that you said what you said.
