Hot Tub Cleanliness

Recommended Posts

For us, it's rare we'll go into those things. When I do, I can't help but thinking "I am bathing in these people's juices like a carrot in a soup pot" so that notion dwindles into us just wanting out of there and back in the showers. There was one time I developed a serious respiratory wheeze from one on EOTS.

Major reason the air jets on the hot tubs have been disconnected.  The hot tubs are kept at the prime breeding temperature for legionella, and then you aerosolize the water that an inhaled virus is in?  Yup, air jets gone.

What am I missing here? Every hot tub I have been in, on a ship... has bubbles. They Symphony had a couple nice and strong ones that were amazing on my back. Is there another air jet you are referring to?

Not an engineer here, but I´d think it´s only water jets and no air jets.

I always thought it was water jets but never get in a hot tub so never checked before.

Tubs used to have water jets that were on all the time, and air jets that were turned on and off with buttons along the rim.  To the best of my knowledge, all the air jets have been disconnected.

I have seen several hotel hot tubs where the jets are on timers.

When the timer finishes the water is still and someone has to push a button next to the hot tub to restart the jets.

Does anyone have an facts about the maintenance of hot tubs on RCI ships? I'm a little queasy about getting in considering how many others use them. TYVM.

If you’re immune system is at all compromised it’s best to avoid hot tubs and pools. Especially with drinks package being available. Often times drinks are delivered to passengers who spend their time in hot tubs and pools.

Cancer survivors are at high risk for infections. A small cut can allow for infections.

A good friend of ours nearly losses a leg from hot tub to cut foot infection. Cancer survivors should be aware.

My wife avoids all hot tubs and pools.

A nurse at Dana Farber gave us information on this on post cancer first cruise.

Wow... I am usually picky, but hot tubs and pools do not bother me. I personally do not like being in the hot tub while others are in there, but that is more of an anti social thing than anything.

With the random sample of people on CC, you would think the pools and hot tubs would be empty... yet I have to wait until late night/early morning to be able to use the hot tub by myself. 😳

Same here.  Hot tubs and pools don't bother me at all.  It's one of the things I really enjoy on a cruise.  And I've never gotten sick from either.

Wow, we were on that cruise or a similar one with a group of eight and one of my friends who had been i n the hot tub got sick. Luckily  she is a nurse and recognized her symptoms immediately, but that was a horrible flight home for her.

I have never been in one and after that incidence. never plan on getting in one.

Sorry your friend got ill.  The cruise was sometime in the summer and out of NYC.  Weather very rocky before docking in Bermuda.

What is the significance of the drink package in your post?

On our GR cruise 6-18 April, a woman was apparently breastfeeding an approximately 1 year old in the hottub.  We were told by someone who saw it and reported it.  First, a baby in a diaper, second, a baby in a hot tub and third a woman breastfeeding in the hot tub.  No one I know would ever think that was a good idea.  So many things could go wrong in this scenario.  Not to mention, that is really bad parenting.

Ugh!

Careful with the term "cancer survivor." I have been in remission for nearly 10 years, and my immune system is as strong as anyone else's.

What goes in must come out?

But what does that have to do with infection / immunocompromise?

Are you stating that the drink package causes someone to literally poop in the hot tub against their will?

If that's the case, why isn't there poop all over the casino stools, the dining room chairs, the bar/lounge chairs, the pool loungers, the theater seating, the floor all around the ship, etc.?

I think we all  know the by-product of too much drink and if people drink plenty of liquid but stop in the hot tub to long well we all know where that water is ending up.

But I still don't understand why this should affect an immunocompromised person.

URINE IS STERILE, PEOPLE!!!

While it may not be the most pleasant thing to think about, sitting in a vat full of nothing but urine is not going to make you sick or give you an infection.

So again I ask, what does the drink package have to do with infection???

I won't get into the whole sterile urine thing, but urine is one of the things the chlorine is there for, and since there is always a residual of chlorine in the water, anything that someone deposits in the water, be it skin cells or urine, will be sanitized and there will be no issue with an immunocompromised person.

Fresh urine is normally sterile.  It grows bacteria pretty quickly after it leaves the body.  It can also harbor  bacteria.

I really hope this happens far less than what a lot of people think, but I am not even remotely concerned about it from a cleanliness standpoint. I just cannot imagine an adult sitting in a hot tub, being too lazy to get out and go use the restroom.

As a bit of a germophobe the mere thought of one dirty arse in the hot tub is enough to put me off going in one.  I don't care how much chlorine is in there the thought of coming into contact with someone else's fecal matter makes me shutter.

Then don't touch anything in public ever again.

Doorknobs, chairs, handrails, loungers, tables, grocery carts, blah blah blah.  Pretty much any surface that the general public touches has fecal matter on it.

Wow really ? I have a graduate degree and am not stupid for God's sake.  I wash my hands religiously whether on a cruise or at home.  I'm not some freak.  Sorry for being sanitary..

I actually dont touch any those surfaces, if have to use my arm, leg, foot or sweatshirt sleeves to push/pull. I'm around multiple Family members that can get sick easily. Know cant avoid 100% but avoid what I can.
