Where will 18-year-old be allowed?

Recommended Posts

We are taking a family cruise in July on Sunshine to celebrate our granddaughter's high school graduation.  Where will she be allowed on the ship?  Can she go into bars with us (of course, she won't be drinking alcohol)?  Anywhere she won't be allowed?  I know she can't go with me on the Serenity deck (probably the biggest disappointment).

I will probably get nailed for saying this, but as long as your 18 years old looks a bit older than 18, and acts mature, she could innately pass as a "21-year-old". However, the 18-20-year-old age group can be a bit awkward as you have just turned an adult but don't yet feel like an adult. She will not be allowed in Club O2.

I thought I read on the board here that your photo comes up each time you use your Sail and Sign card.  If that is true, then I wonder if your age or birthdate will be shown too.

Well, I guess as long as she doesn't use her sail and sign to purchase drinks/food in Serenity...

Oh... to answer your question ( sorry, got side-tracked...  😅 )…

Shipboard venues with age restrictions: Passengers must be 18 or older to enter the casino, play table games or slot machines, and play bingo; use the fitness center on their own; use spa facilities, such as steam and sauna rooms, thermal suites and thalassotherapy pools; enter the dance club after 10 p.m.; and attend midnight shows. Passengers must be 21 or older to enter Serenity adults-only deck spaces. Teens ages 12 to 17 can use the fitness center when accompanied by a parent or guardian (guardian is defined as age 25 or older).

One of my guests last summer was an eighteen year old granddaughter.  The best I can remember she was allowed to go anywhere except the O2 club for kids and the Serenity area.

She rarely went to bars with her 25 year old sister, because of limited seating at all of them, the one exception being the Piano Bar.  She often went to clubs to dance, and was the only one in our group who walked away from the casino with more money than she started with.

It's very much the same as at home.  Old enough for lots, too young for a couple of things and too old for others.  She had a fantastic time.

I took the grandkids 2 years ago on carnival elation.18/17/9.they let all three of those knuckleheads go wherever they want until the wee hours of the morning .they told us all kinds of  things they saw in the clubs even the little one .they had their own cabin 2 doors down so we never knew when they came and went.i was surprised security didn't make them go to the cabin and guest services only contacted me when they ran up a bill that needed to be paid.needless to say I won't take them again.

My niece turned 18 right before our cruise and we took her to the casino.  She also went with us to the nightclub. It was fun for her.

She definitely knows the difference between the cruise and home, none of those things can happen at home.  She was also quite pleased to get her first fruity adult beverage in Mexico.

The nice thing about cruises is that bars aren't treated as bars on land...meaning anyone is allowed in them, just not everyone can drink.  It is a little tough for an 18-21 year old on a cruise if they aren't going with someone, as there is no club where they can meet others, like the kids club.  We took my 18 year old last year, but he brought some friends with him so was fine.  As it stated above, they can go anywhere except the serenity deck and kids club.  Was kind of cool to be able to teach my son how to play blackjack in the casino as mainland casinos are 21+.

I started cruising at 18- it was a little awkward, because I felt I shouldn't go in bars (since I didn't at the time at home), I got called out for being too young in the Piano Bar, and I knew nothing about the casino.  Also, I'm pretty much an introvert, so meeting people on the pool deck wasn't in the cards for me.  But, once I got over that and realized I could do pretty much whatever I wanted, I had a great time.  I do like doing things alone, and I realized no one really noticed or cared what I was doing and who I was with.

If you plan to spend a lot of time as a family, your grand daughter probably won't have too much time to wonder who she should do things with- because the whole family will be doing things.  I didn't see you mention which ship, but if you're going on one that has the red frog pub, they sometimes even have games in that area.

How could you purchase drinks without S&S card? What food is for sale in the Serenity?

What I'm saying is how else would you buy a drink, cash is not accepted.

I know you can't buy any drinks without your S&S, so don't purchase drinks with HER sail and sign. Have a parent/guardian who is over 21 purchase it for her.

Here's what I DO know.  They won't be allowed in Club O2.  The age of majority mixing with underage teens would open CCL to legal risk.  A few may indicate that they've pulled it off but that would be the rare exception.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!  She WILL NOT be drinking on the ship. And she will probably be with family most of the time.  I just wanted to make sure she could go in the bars with us. But her Poppy has promised her a Pina Colada in Nassau!

Meanwhile, I indulge in my virgin piña colada.

Oh yeah, definitely no alcoholic drinks on the cruise ship but we very carefully introduced her to fruity adult beverages on the island. It was fun, they are good kids and although the adults males raised a few eyebrows, it was all in fun. It was really cool that she could go dance in the nightclub with us and my mom -grandma helped her play the slots. She still can’t do that at home either. She will be 21 next year.

Oh geez...... this isn't a topic re parenting!!!!!   It's about venues on a cruise ship where 18 year olds can and cannot go.

Go over to Floataway and start a thread if you want to discuss/debate what some parents do/don't allow and why you do or don't agree, please

Thanks..

Our son (now 20) has been allowed into all areas except Serenity (which he is not interested in and hasn't visited) since he was 18.  He has had his S&S card scanned when going into the adult comedy show to make sure he is of age.

Not quite.  You must be 21 to go to Serenity.
